Dude, 398 USD?!?!?! I got mine new (in the States) for ~$200. For what it's worth for anyone who's interested, since you and Skall are the only folks to have reviewed this sword on RU-vid, I've had mine for over a year, I cut with it regularly (once a month or more), and it's held up perfectly. The blade and D-guard are exquisite, fit and finish is tight and well done, and it handles beautifully. Mine also came with a paper-cutting edge, though it wasn't shaving sharp. All of these traits contrasted with what you're saying about yours makes me think this is another data point in a loooong line of Cold Steel quality control issues and individual variance in product quality. Sorry you got a crappy one, mate! Keep up the excellent reviews.:)

Thanks man!!! I’m very glad you got yours at such a great price. I don’t believe I paid 398$ but that’s what kult of Athena had them listed at at the time of this review. I’m happy you have a good quality version, because I love the sword design and it cut very well. Just wish cold steel was consistent, which we know is an issue. Thanks again bro for your input. Information for potential buyers is why I have a channel on swords and any input from the community is greatly appreciated by all!

Thanks for the review, you probably saved some of us 400 bucks. CS has some QC issues obviously. I had a 1796 Brit Light Cavalry Sabre by CS and there was a thin crack on the spine just like yours but I didn't notice it at first. Once I spotted it I immediately got a replacement for it as I purchased it through Amazon. These sabre/cutlass/hanger types of swords by CS seem to be either made by Windlass or Universal Swords.
@mattamathics1108
@mattamathics1108 2 года назад
I did not think the test I did was that abusive. Did you? I have mixed opinions of CS. They are relatively cheap, although 400$ is not that cheap. Their swords are cool designs, I must say. But their motto used to be “the world’s strongest, sharpest swords!” It wasn’t sharp or that strong lol
@patthecat1800
@patthecat1800 2 года назад
@@mattamathics1108 The most abusive part wasn't the sapling. It was the thick hardwood branch that you cut, directly into the stump underneath. Their was no where for the force to go except back into the blade. Stump looked like Oak too, if I'm not mistaken. (Another very hard wood.) I feel like that particular moment would constitute a lot more then "clearing bush." That being said, I feel like Skall was more abusive in his tests if I recall correctly. Sorry about your sword, buddy.
@FortuneFavoursTheBold
@FortuneFavoursTheBold 2 года назад
@@mattamathics1108 No, it should be more than fine. Some $30 cheap machetes can take much more punishment like chopping to a tree trunk without a crack. Historically you will have to fight against someone who have shafted weapons with much greater hardness and density than green wood (even if it's hard wood), with cutlasses and hangers, maybe not so much with hunting swords. But crack was probably already there to begin with, the impact from hard chopping likely made it more obvious to the eye. If it was just dulling or edge rolling, that's another story. With a crack in the spine, the blade is basically done.
@tedblackburn8679
@tedblackburn8679 2 года назад
@@mattamathics1108 that was definitely not abusive. There are 50$ machete's that are built much stronger. A 200$ kukri from nepal would cut that thing to pieces and suffer no damage. The best place to get a sword is an actual blacksmith , or make one yourself. Most corporations are cheapskates. Profiteers , not enthusiasts.

Thank you for this video. Also, which Windlass cutlass blade did you use to replace the CS blade and was it difficult to do?
@mattamathics1108
@mattamathics1108 2 года назад
Thanks for watching!!! It’s a blade off of a pirate cutlass model that I believe has since been discontinued. It was not that hard to do. Both swords had full tangs with nut construction. I just made sure to measure the tang to see if it was long enough to pass through the hilt. It was a little too long, so I cut the threaded portion down a little. Fits great.

Interesting the only two reviews of this I'm aware of on RU-vid are yours and Skallagrim's. On his the knuckle guard broke off when doing some heavy cutting. Well that's only two examples I'm going to wager that cold steel's quality control on this product needs to improve!

I am obviously aware a “hunting sword” is not acquired purely for that purpose, but $16.00 CS Tanto or Bowie machetes would have been just as and probably even more effective at both clearing the brush and dispatching wounded game.

That one is cool looking, but very pricey for CS standards. I'd check which country it's made in. CS's China stuff seems to be better then their India stuff. The CS stuff ppl recommend (Italian longsword, Hand and a Half sword, etc) tend to be from China.

Question, do you think that the temperature had anything to do with the failure ?The water on the blade makes it very cold , but it is probably another shoddy heat treat . I like buying from Traditional Filipino Weapons, he uses a unique 5160 spring steel and D2 blend that has never come close to failing for me . They make in cycles so patience is a virtue my friend .
@mattamathics1108
@mattamathics1108 2 года назад
It is definitely possible. I’m more inclined to think the blade had incorrect heat treatment. I own a sansibar sword from TFW and it’s great so I understand what your saying. I want to buy a kris from them but like you said I’ll have to wait until they are available. Thanks for watching!

In german language, i am german and Brittas boyfriend, we make a difference between Hirschfänger, Plaute, Standhauer , Waidmesser , Saufänger and Waidblatt. This example, shown in Video is in my opinion a copy of 17th century. A Hirschfänger is a singleedged straight blade. It was used for final stab/ Fangstoß, for selfdefence and as a sign, the carrier is a nobleman, a professional hunter or a forrest official/ Förster. Also german Jäger ( light infantry) had been originaly professional hunters and forrest officials going to war with their rifles and Hirschfänger. But in seven year war 1756 to 1763 german Jäger changed their civilian Hirschfänger to military Hirschfänger ( see sword bayonnet of british Baker rifle). After 1840s every licenced hunter was allowed to own a Hirschfänger also. The military Hirschfänger with time got regular bayonnets, and forrest officials and licenced hunters carried theirs up to 1940s. Today they are still produced and used mostly for huntsmans ceremonies. The Saufänger is a strong wide dagger, bladelegth over 20 cm( 8"), used for final stab of wild boar (Sau- sow). For the reason, that in last 20 to 25 years large number of wild boar became a problem in Germany, modern variants of Hirsch( deer)- and Saufänger have a comeback, also boarspears appear again. No more in use is a variant of Hirschfänger with curved blades, i think Plaute is the name. This had been used during pompeous hunts of rich noblemen by their servants to cut the muscles and flexes(?) of the games backlegs, that the nobleman had the honour oft the final stab. ( Good that this stopped very long ago). The Standhauer was the huntsman variant of german engineer troops fascine knife, more usefull as machete/ billhook, than stabbing game. They had been used up to wwl. A smaller variant of this, the Waidblatt is still in use, also as small butchers cleaver to cut the game into pieces, but this knifetype is rarer than few decades ago. Then there had been formerly the Waidmesser with a wide blade, as far as i know, his was only used as butchers/ cooks knife. So, i am no huntsman, centuries ago this ,hunting sword' would usualy not have been used for cutting branches.

@@andrewsock1608 : The appeareance of this , hunting sword ' is not typical. When you watch good collections, for example in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, or in Sigmaringen Castle, you can see, how Hirschfänger changed from , Langes Messer' over , Dussak/ Dusägge' to Hirschfänger or bayonnet. The curved blade , the round handle and the Style of guards ( Parierstange/ Faustbügel) are not usual for the intended purpose. But, when after failed Revolution attempt of 1848/49 everyone could buy a Hirschfänger in Germany/Austria, If he had enough Money, there had been produced many Models, in which features or many eras had been Mixed.
