Cold Steel Pipe Hawk or CRKT Woods Chogan ?
In this video I will compare the similarities and differences of these two popular tomahawks and do a few camp chores. This is not an all out review, more of an overview for those wondering which one might be a better fit for them. These are two very popular budget friendly camp tools and either one would be a good choice.
Third attempt at uploading so not listing all specifications, sorry, they are easily found on your retailer of choice sale page or the manufacturers website.
The main difference of note between the two is the weight, the Pipe hawk weighs in at 16.8oz and the CRKT weighs in at 23.1oz ( head weight only ) handles vary in weight. The CRKT is much heavier. The handle on the CRKT is shorter than the Cold Steel. 19 inches (listed) as opposed to the Cold Steel 22 inch handle, not a big deal but notable. Both Tomahawks are made from drop forged 1055 high carbon steel. Both were dull on arrival and needed the head fitted to the handle. Edge retention was in my opinion good, neither seemed to stand above the other and both were fairly sharp even after processing firewood.
Not much else to add, I think it comes down to preference really. Depending on your needs either one is a good choice....then again I don't have to choose I have both.
If you are interested in a Kydex sheath for your CRKT or Cold Steel Tomahawk I am making them, as well as some other select model axes. You can contact me via email listed in my "about" page on the home tab or you can see what I have listed on my Ebay seller page that is ready for immediate sale : my username is ratherbwheelin www.ebay.com/usr/ratherbwheel...

Cool, you got lucky. I have purchased several dozen cold steel tomahawks and this CRKT and almost every one was dull. As to my "credibility" here's one of my videos from 9 years ago showing some Cold steel tomahawks out of the box, rough to watch I know...but I will stand behind my statements ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cHmYzt4OxP0.html Thanks for watching!

Out of a couple dozen cold steel products, I’ve had a handful of them show up “sharpened” (questionable at that). Their tomahawks are especially notorious for arriving dull. Different places have different shipping requirements and not everyone may be able to receive the same quality finish. I always expect a project, but I’m never disappointed with the end result. Thanks for the review, ZEUKI1

Great video. I have both, but i have the cs pipe hawk for quite a while now. I’ve used them both to clear our hunting path and plot. I like the pipe hawk better for its lighter profile and thinner blade. It bites deep. The steel feels harder too compare to the chogan.

I got lucky with my crkt. It was almost perfect out of the box. The head to handle fitment was perfect, and it was reasonably sharp. Living in the same town as cold steel. Pipe hawk! Far better. Hawks were never designed to split large logs. Axes were made for that. When making camp fires , dead would from the ground, around 2". Back in the day, they used a saw! These were primarily a weapon. Most people like them, because they are weapons from the past. Thanks for showing!
@imugi-16
@imugi-16 Год назад
Thank you. I think a lot of people, especially bushscrafters, forget that tomahawks were designed to be weapons first. making it as heavy as an axe not only defeats the purpose of them, it's also a lot harder to control since it doesn't have the swell at the bottom of the handle like axes do.

I have had the CRKT woods chogan t hawk since they came out & I have to say my head fit like a glove , no movement , no slippage , it fit nice & Snug to the handle , however I did have to sharpen the blade as usual with just about any tomahawk , it’s a shipping thing & a company not being liable for someone getting hurt before a owner received it kinda thing . I didn’t do anything to mine but did modify it , I didn’t take the clear coat off the head or blade & didn’t take the clear coat off the wood , all I did was wrap a real paracord wrap around the handle below the beard or head using real 550 paracord not the stuff you see in Walmart & I put a knob at the end of the handle using a Bicycle inner tube with Layers then covered it with a 6 inch piece of inner tube from bottom to 1/3d the way up as a grip & roughed up said grip & sharpened the hell out of it . The reason I made a rubber knob like a baseball bats end is so it won’t slip out of my hand & to give it a cushion if the handle ever hits when I throw it that way I don’t risk snapping the handle , yea I know there cheap I even bought 4 extra handles for it just in case . Well there you go just look at the damage on the handle that the CRKT did to the cold steel LOL .

I had pretty much decided to order either a Gransfors Bruk S.F.A. or a Hults Bruk Aneby for a camping/bushcraft axe. I kinda stumbled onto the CRKT Chogan, that lead me to this video. This video lead me to your 2016 H & B Forge Camp Hawk video (great work on that review BTW). The more I looked into H & B, the more I liked them: Hand Forged, American made, family owned and guaranteed for life - and for about 2/3 the price of the Swedish axes I was looking at, for me it was an easy decision. I emailed them yesterday to make sure they were still taking orders during this pandemic, got a great reply from Kassie (Jarrod's wife) this morning and ordered a Large Camp hawk with a spare handle shortly after. Current backlog is about 3 months but if my Large hawk is as good as your medium, I can already tell I'll be ordering many more from them. Anyway, thanks for the great reviews and for steering me toward a great hawk forge.

By any chance do you know if H&B do custom heads? Like if I wanted a tomahawk to have a chisel on the back for digging. I oddly haven't seen any of those online. It's mostly just spikes, and hammer. Don't get me wrong a spike is cool but I think a chisel that can be used to scrape, open paint cans, dig a bit better than a spike. Is more handy plus a spike is scary where a flat curved chisel is safer a bit

@Scablands_Scavenger
@Scablands_Scavenger 4 года назад
Your welcome, the sweater is a surplus item commonly referred to as the "5 button sweater" and can be found most any where, even amazon. There are several blends available mine are mostly wool. They are fantastic outdoor wear because they insulate well but breath because of the lofty weave. One downside is they can catch on brush and become unraveled so I will often times, in briar or thick brush wear a thick over garment to protect it. Hope this helps, thanks for watching!

Good review. I have both Hawks and like them both for different tasks. I feel the Rifleman's hawk is closer to the Chogan as far as apples to apples. I also have the Nobo and like that as a slightly lighter option to the Chogan, but still has the wide blade geometry for those interested. As far as the CRKT fitment being better, you're spot on to say it's no different/each hawk is different quality fit and finish. The Nobo I received was near impossible to remove at first. I did the sanding/filing of the shaft and inside of the eye and slapped it back on. It's now impossible to remove... I have 5 Hawks and refitted all of them, so I'm blaming this one on the quality control. Still functional, 100%, but the head is no longer removable...

I think if the crkt handle was a couple of inches longer it would be a bit more balanced because it is heavy in the hand I find myself looking for more handle to grab.but I do feel they are both great tools and for what you pay for them they are both worth it. I have heard it from many different perspectives. Some are ok with having to do work on an item to make it useable, others expect it to work when purchased. Some will complain about having to fit the handle and sharpen a 35$ tool, but scoff at paying 125$ for a premium made one ready to go. Could be also some people just don't have the skills, tools or time, like paying someone to change your oil, building a website or mowing the lawn. It is a hot topic some times and with prices going up on most items will continue to be. I agree the Riflemans is a better comparison to the Chogan with regard to weight and cutting edge. I don't know why the Pipe and Chogan are most requested. It is kind of the same deal as people asking for a comparison video of the CS Hudson vs the HB med camp hawk. They are not really the most similar of available hawks .

In terms of quality I'd have to give it to CRKT. As with any CRKT product they require a little work to get them up and running properly, but once you get a good edge on them and customize your handle they are fantastic... this shouldn't be a problem for anyone who works with blades and axes regularly. I love my Chogan, takes big bites and chops with ease. I also do not like the sloped downward angle of the cold steel hawks.... the chogan has much nicer blade geometry, despite having to somewhat reprofile it out of the box.

I purchased a CRKT WOODS CHOGAN. Totally dig the the Woods Chogan. Had to sand off the factory handle finish like with all of them. I rubbed in Mineral OIL which is safe from spontaneous combustion and easy and cheap and works great on metal and wood. I hitched in constrictors for grip stations, and even have a lanyard on mine. I throw it nearly everyday right and left handed. I use it to clear small fallen trees from my paths regularly. I use it to practice fighting with my cane in place of a kerambit or push dagger, or machete, all of which I use and practice with. I have given up on CS products because Im tired of the hassle. Unfortunately United Cutlery also sold. So a lot of unique and quality blades of swords, knifes, and Tomahawks are not easily available anymore. Also the CS Big Bore Blowguns can be difficult to get or get accessories for. I have to figure how to make my own flights for the .625" blowguns. Wish I could upload a photo of my Tomahawk here, It's seriously baddass looking and functional the way I got it rigged. I Mineral Oil it almost every use, and I strop hone it on a dead tree with no bark next to where I throw it from. That keeps it paper cutting sharp so long as it don't spark no flint or quartz after a bounced throw. I came in and cut paper last night with it straight out of the forest, then I used a Phellinius igniarius bracket fungus to strop it finer before Oiling it all.

I have both, and I found, that the Cold Steel bites deeper into the wood. The CRKT is a better splitter. My Choise is the Cold Steel for self defence and light wood work and a Wetterlings Les Stroud Bushman axe. Greetings from Germany, Martin. WWG1WGA !

The pipe hawk weighs 17oz and the CRKT weighs 23oz without handles... The CRKT is much thicker than the Pipe hawk in the bit. I think it depends on what you are intending to do the most. The CRKT is going to lend itself better to processing larger amounts of wood, splitting bigger rounds with knots etc. The pipe hawk is a bit lighter and thinner in profile so may be a better choice for fine work and at a half pound less will not be as heavy on a belt etc. The CRKT is actually more comparable to the Cold Steel Rifleman hawk in terms of weight and size... but I had many requests for comparing it to the pipe hawk because they look similar. The best advice I can give is.... buy the one that fits your intended use first and put the other one on a watch list and wait for it to go on sale, I have seen them drop to really low prices (22$) sometimes on Amazon etc the trick is not to buy when they are low on stock and charging 40-50 dollars.

I prefer the Hudson bay hawk myself. For the money you can't go wrong with the cold steel. And I keep two ready in my travel bags. Anyone that doesn't have a hatchet or tomahawk for shtf is kidding themselves. I'd much rather split wood with a hawk than a just a knife. Luckily the handles aren't expensive. I've done that a time or two.

A better comparison would be a rifleman's hawk the pipe hawk is made to be a smaller lighter axe.

I agree, there is a large weight difference. I think I mention this about the 4:50 mark. This was probably the most requested comparison I had received over the years by viewers. I don't know why people tend to compare these two rather than the Chogan/Rifleman's. I suppose it's the general shape. It could also be they are the two most popular sellers? Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I do not know of anyone that has them in stock, pipe, trail, riflemem, norse etc have been very scarce for quite a while. I suggest looking at Knife Center dot com, SMKW and Blade HQ may have them sooner, you can sign up for email alerts. Amazon also sold them at one point but as the others has been out for a while. Model Number is 90PHH.

Will the chogan hawk sheath fit the pipe hawk.
@Scablands_Scavenger
@Scablands_Scavenger 4 года назад
No, they are form fit to each head/design. The chogan has a wider bit and deeper beard. Even the Cold Steel pipe hawk, frontier and spike hawk have slightly different profiles that require their own sheaths, and they all look pretty similar at first glance.

@@archer125 No problem, that is why I created my "custom listing" so if people don't see a model they want in the color they want they can order it and I will make it, otherwise I just guess at what people want and throw a bunch of stuff on ebay and have to pay extra listing fees LOL.

Depending on how bad the profile is anything from a belt sander or 4" grinder with flap disc to wood blocks with paper and stones. I posted a video showing this years ago ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DLL7-7Lm9Iw.html There are many different ways to do it.

if you want a ax get a ax these are Tomahawks but everyone use them as a wood tool
@Scablands_Scavenger
@Scablands_Scavenger Год назад
Hmm interesting, where does it say in the big book of life rules that a tomahawk can not be used for a "woods tool"? Certainly find plenty of evidence of their multi use in historical documents. True some were used as weapons, just as knives and bows were but there is plenty to suggest they were used as a "multi tool". Now if you want to bring in todays "tomahawks" and compare them to small axes... you have even less of an argument. For instance the CRKT here in this video is about 1.5 lb head with a wooden handle and has the same cutting edge as most "axes". They perform almost the same in many tasks.
