The Cold Steel US 1860 heavy cavalry saber is a very heavy and sexy blade, super sharp sword, with half the edge non-sharpened (but can be sharpened for use). The blade is made of 1055 carbon steel, full tang, and comes with a steel scabbard. For photography work on this beautiful saber, please visit: www.taoistmaste...

Also, the cork between the scabbard and hilt was also to create a seal to prevent water from filling the scabbard and rusting the blade; sometimes it was leather, but it was usually cork (cheap and plentiful, and easy to grow/obtain). Some soldiers had been known to drill tiny holes at the end of the scabbard for water to drain out of, should such a moisture problem occur.

+Jamie Moore very cool! Thanks for the knowledge!

Really neat seeing a Western blade used that way. Not how I would imagine a saber being used (so close to the body).

+James Joseph It's along the same lines as how a shamshir would have been used, some tulwar/talwar in India used the same form; and of course the demonstrated Chinese styles. This saber is a bit long to be used on horse back, though. You'd get a lot of reach, but it's heavy, and the length makes it harder (or at least take longer) to switch sides. That being said, the weight of the blade also means you wouldn't even have to swing it, but just hold it out and let the speed of the horse move the blade. Just clipping someone at a steady pace, or a full gallop, with a blade that fine and heavy would do significant damage. Also considering it's a Napoleonic design; most militaries gave up on armors and helmets in favor of speed and mobility and firearms. I still want this saber so bad, though!

I like your personality! I enjoyed this review. Thank you! I received this saber yesterday. It’s obviously not made to fight with anywhere other on than horse back. It’s entirely too heavy. I’m 6’3” 220lbs. You can’t tell in the video but the blades aren’t perfectly flat. So the polish shows undulations, a lot of undulations. I bought this saber to strengthen my arm and wrist through practice. Mission accomplished!

The MYTH of the dull cavalry saber: Essentially, when you were in garrison, with all your practice drawing and re-sheathing your saber into a mass-issue steel scabbard would quickly render it as dull as a butter knife. When you went out on active in hostile country patrol or expected battle, that is when you lined up before the company armorer had have him grind you up a nice sharp edge and you tipped him well because your life depended on it.

When you demonstrate the blades in a martial arts form you look " gracefull" and you seem to do it with confidence and its smooth if you get what I trying to say

thanks! haha! It's also how you can keep doing the practice non-stop over and over again without running out of breath too. I can go on 8 hrs doing kungfu non-stop without any problem, and that is a very good exercise to pump your body up for any fighting situation too.

This is my dream saber Many years ago when i was in the army i had to clean and polish a original antic heavy cavalry from my regiment . It was around 130 years old this was impressive, the feeling to have a historical pieces in your hand I can tell you that saber was extremly well designed for it task

You have good form and your video was informative. It would have been better without the extra audio from a radio/tele in the background. Also the insert in the upper right could have omitted and inserted in its entirety as full screen. As it was it too was distracting and blocked some of your movements on the main screen.

@Chiinnature

that's kinda not so easy to wield 2 big blades in one, but I am sure it is not impossible with kungfu around, LOL! Cold Steel Chopper (All Terrain Chopper Machete), Demo, Review, Speechless

If you upload so many videos in such a short amount of time, I will be overwhelmed and probably won't watch any video. You will probably get more views if you uploaded them daily.

sure will do that, no worry, we will slow down abit very soon.

Out of all of the Cold Steel Sabers, what is your favorite as far as real usefulness?
@robdurant7944

So either the 1860 had no real distal taper OR cold steel doesn’t pay attention to proper blade geometry. Can someone tell me more about this?
@-Bile-

Cold steel generally ignores distal taper in their reproductions. Complaints about the balance of their swords are persistent, even 2 years later.

Thank you for this video. I've been waiting a long time for someone to review it, and handle it. I don't trust Cold Steel swords (or even most of their knives); but I absolutely love the design of this saber, and really want it. Nobody else makes on like this, so I've been really apprehensive about splurging. ^_^

+Jamie Moore hahaha glad you like it! Cold Steel SWORDS are more of a hit and miss sometimes. They have some quality control issues. Sometimes cracked scabbard and shit happens, but if you get a good one, it's definitely guaranteed to work as it should! :)

Interesting how cold steel supplies these. Traditionally, these blades would actually be blunt. They're meant to be used on infantry from horseback, so the idea is you ride the horse at a gallop, hold the sword out at your side, and just clip heads as you sail by...you can see how effective they'd be. They would leave them blunt so they wouldn't hang up in the target.
@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature 10 лет назад
Thanks for the comment, I did heard from someone who said they handled a real deal of this thing, and yes it is not "blunt" but semi-sharpened. There is an edge to it too, but it is not like a razor sharp thing. I guess if you leave it unsharpened, people will criticize and say why it cannot cut "bottles and shit" which most people won't get what you say anyway... because they don't have a horse and some heads to try out the fun.

Chiinnature Anyway it's made by Cold Steel so there must be some sharp edge somewhere ^_^
