*Context:* -0:05 (2nd - 3rd June 1946): Although it's not shown on screen, on the 2nd and 3rd of June 1946 saw the Italian General Elections take place. After the end of the Italian Civil War in 1945 the Fascists were completely deposed and Democracy returned to the Kingdom of Italy. The person who replaced Benito Mussolini [1883 - 1945, PM 1922 - 1945] as Prime-Minister was Alcide De Gasperi [1881 - 1954, in power 1945 - 1953] who began to push for a republic in Italy. His victory in the 1946 General Elections meant he then had the power to do this so on the same day as the election an Institutional Referendum was held and the Republicans were victorious. This meant Italy then became the Italian Republic. -1:01 (17th April 1946): After the end of World War One the territories now known as Syria and Lebanon were given to France, while Iraq was given to the United Kingdom. While Iraq was given independence in 1932 by the British, the French held on to Syria and Lebanon even after their surrender in World War Two when it was given to Vichy France. The British occupied it shortly after the invasion of Iraq in 1941 and like many other places this began to create a growing movement for independence. After France regained its colonies it began to struggle to hold onto them so in 1946 it decided to let the Syrian Republic and the Republic of Lebanon come into being. Similar to these colonies, the British Trans-Jordan Emirate was given independence and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was established. -1:37 (31st March 1946 - 30th August 1949): After the fall of the Kingdom of Greece to Germany and Italy in World War Two, the people of the nation had been forced to put aside their conflicting political opinions to try and overthrow their occupiers. The British played a vital part of this effort as they saw Greece as quite an essential part of Europe to control. With the Soviets slamming through Eastern Europe in 1944 the British realised they needed to at least have one country under still allied with them after the war after seeing how Yugoslavia's government-in-exile was replaced by a Communist partisan group. This prompted them to land in Southern Greece on the 3rd December 1944 and easily overwhelm the now crumbling German army. When the war ended and Greece was re-established with efforts being made to put King George II [1890 - 1947, reign 1922 - 1924, 1935 - 1947] back in power in the country. The Communist groups in the country at this point no longer had to worry about a foreign invader, so they immediately turned back to fighting themselves and on the night of the 30th March 1946 they attacked a police station in Litochoro. They received backing from the Yugoslavian and Albanian Communist governments while the central government was backed militarily by the British. The Communists eventually declared the Provisional Democratic Government of Greece. -2:50 (12th March 1947): In response to Communist expansionism across Eastern Europe and in places like China where they handed the Communists a sizeable piece of land in Manchuria, US President Truman released a public statement stating that the United States would "do everything in its power to prevent the spread of Communism". This is taken by many to be the official "declaration" of the Cold War. -4:00 (Mid 1947): The United States and Britain unite both their occupation zones to improve economic cooperation in the ruins of Germany that by this point were still being swept away. This unified zone did not become any sort of official country, just a mashing together of two occupation zones managed by a military administration. -4:30 (29th November 1947): In 1917 during the First World War, the British were having trouble attempting to invade the Ottoman Empire. While they had seen some success during landings in modern day Kuwait, on most other fronts they had stalled and were unable to enter the nation. This forced them to make some overlapping promises with several groups who they wanted aid from. First they promised the French a large occupation zone in modern day Syria and after that they promised the Arabs in the south of the empire an independent state. While the Arabs did significant damage to Ottoman supply lines, they weren't able to take out the Ottoman forces as much as the British had hoped for. This forced them to search for more allies in the region, so they turned to the Jewish people living in the Palestine region. In exchange for their support in the war, they promised an independent Jewish state which directly overlapped with both the Arab agreements and the agreements with the French. When the war ended the British partially fulfilled their promise with the French but completely failed to aid the Arab or Jewish supporters in their promises. While the Arabs eventually just formed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the British occupied the region of Palestine and formed the Mandate of Palestine which was British ruled. In 1936 a mass revolt occurred and it became increasingly clear the British couldn't hold on to Palestine forever. Prime-Minister Clement Attlee's policies of decolonisation lead to negotiations between the two sides and eventually the division of Palestine along religious lines. The Jewish formed the State of Israel while the Arabs formed the All-Palestine Protectorate. -5:28 (24th June 1948 - 12th May 1949): Even though Germany was no longer in existence, the occupation zones the great powers held still managed to brew tensions. The former capital of Berlin lay over 100 miles behind the border of the Soviet occupation zone and had been solely captured by them, but at the Potsdam Conference it was decided that it would be split on a smaller level. The Soviets were desperate to assert control over the city as they saw it as a threat to their power. West Berlin was very clearly more developed than the east and received a lot more funding to build up their infrastructure and there was nothing stopping people in East Berlin from simply crossing over and moving to the west. They decided that the best way to fix this was to siege out West Berlin until they submitted and agreed to unify the city under Soviet rule. Due to its position behind Soviet lines it relied on British, French and American supply convoys which delivered just enough supplies to the city to survive. On the 24th June 1948 Soviet troops moved in and blocked every railway and road leading into Berlin and turned back everything carrying supplies, even stopping a power station in East Berlin from supplying the west. Britain, France and the United States realised that the Soviets wouldn't shoot down planes over Germany as that would be an act of war, so they dispatched hundreds of planes to airdrop supplies into Berlin. This was called the "Berlin Airlift" and it resulted in more supplies arriving in Berlin than before the blockade. Many pilots even dropped candy over Berlin which became very good PR for the west and became the symbol of the airlift. Eventually the Soviets were forced to open the roads leading to Berlin and regular supply routes started up again. -6:10 (1st August 1948): France finally agreed to merge their occupation zones with the British and Americans forming the Trizone. -7:36 (15th May 1948 - 10th March 1949): With Israel finally declaring its complete independence, the surrounding states that were part of the Arab League became furious due to their anger against the existence of a Jewish state, claiming that Palestine deserved to be ruled by the Arabs. When the Palestinian Mandate officially dissolved at Midnight on the 14th May there was no longer a third party to settle the issues between the Muslims and Jews. The majority of the UN Security Council nations denounced the Arab attacks against Israel but the Republic of China [which at this point was about to collapse due to civil war] supported them. Syrian and Lebanese forces quickly swept in from the north but were quickly rebuked by the Israeli Defence Forces. Israeli troops shortly after swept into the city of Jerusalem and captured it. A temporary truce was called soon after but when it ended the Israeli troops attacked the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the last two major Arab strongholds. Israel decided to host separate armistices with different Arab nations and eventually they agreed to let Israel take all of the territory it had occupied in the war, but Egypt would annex the Gaza Strip and Jordan would annex the West Bank. -10:10 (16th October 1949): With the Communist nations supporting them gradually beginning to pull away from the conflict, the Democratic Army of Greece was being pushed further back by the western powers. On the 16th October 1949 a radio broadcast went out from the Communist headquarters declaring they had lost the Civil War. Many of the remaining Greek Communists fled into neighbouring Albania. -10:36 (4th April 1949): With the United Nations not being nearly as powerful as the United States had hoped for, they decided that the best way to ensure peace was a military alliance that would defend every nation that was apart of it. This was called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and it would be based in Brussels, Belgium. It would become the main root of almost everything else that happened in the Cold War.
