It’s starting to get cold out there! Our mindset is changing and getting prepared for winter! It’s important to develop this now before it’s the middle of winter.
Here are the three initial thoughts where our heads at:
1) Dressing Warm!
2) Aircraft Equipment!
3) Up to Date with the Icing Awareness Course!

The cowl plugs are not useful if you are gonna sit longer than a couple of hours on a cold ramp. Tanis: “Preheating is required for temperatures at or below 20F/-7C (wind chill factor) for 2 hours or more.” The extension chord is a good idea...it has to handle 480w/4amps over that 100 feet. A 16awg chord (3-prong) can do 10amps so a thicker one is not needed. Always keep the TKS topped before any flight during the winter. The system has to be run once per month in any case (using about 1/2 gallon). Buying the fluid in bulk is a good idea. Also, part of maintaining the system requires washing titanium weeps with a microfiber cloth and dishwasher soapy water (no cleaning agents) to remove bugs blocking the holes. Always make sure to use the pitot tube cover and in case of big wind on a ramp, tie the back of it with a wire tie. Make sure to clear the static port before a flight if it's iced over.

@@al.waterloo You guys are the pros. Excellent video and tips. We Cirrus pilots are a family and what I know I have learned from other Cirrus pilots and from my own experience flying my SR22T. Four years in this one and it's still a dream to fly.

The Cirrus ecosystem with its focus on safety is the thing that makes their aircraft unique! Thank you, you're saving lives and making the aviation experiences better for all of us.

Very important to point out the value of not skipping anything regarding all the steps involved in preflight, regardless of how cold it is. A very key topic, thank you brother man.

It’s so easy to skip steps when you are cold and uncomfortable. It’s important to dress right that way your pilot instinct feels comfortable!

Good tips Al. I wouldn't have thought about the 100' extension cord. I'll be taking that with me on my trip to GFK this Jan. Cheers!

100 feet is clutch! I was always a foot too short, then 100 feet seemed to make the cut most everywhere.

I love Cirrus airplanes and have always wanted to fly one. Im a student pilot going for my checkride here in a few weeks, I live in the Chicagoland area, and if any one knows a cirrus pilot or a way to get a chance to fly in a cirrus SR series please let me know. I am willing to split fuel or anything. Just been a dream of mine to own a cirrus.
