Today we are installing a cold air intake from Trail Head Off Road into my brothers 2001 Jeep TJ! We are going to use live data to determine if cold air intakes are worth the money! I also explain why a cold air intake can help you get more performance out of your engine! Is this the best Jeep Wrangler intake ever?! Lets find out!!

a 20C drop in air temp result's in about 7 or 8% denser air i think? I'm not sure it's going to make a big difference in power by itself. I did a similar thing for my XJ, it was more to raise the intake a bit though. With one of these you don't have to worry about ingesting water until it's over your hood, and it doesn't look poser like a snorkel does, and it doesn't catch branch's and shit.

Instead of putting the intake into the cowl, just move / add onto the stock intake so a 3" duct to in front of the radiator. Lots of cold air out in front of the radiator.. cowl inlet pumps engine noise into the cab.

Hey Nate! You told me to watch this when you saw my filter sitting on the throttle body on the trail. Gotta say I'm impressed with the difference in temps. I'm gonna have to try something like this. Also I like that you made it clear that this mod is not a huge boost in power alone. Combined with exhaust it makes a night and day difference though. Thanks for the sweet content! Hope to wheel with ya again!
@waynesanders1406
@waynesanders1406 3 дня назад
Caveat to just doing the intake mod to see changes in power. If you live in a hot sunny environment, and/or if you spend more time in slower traffic, it will probably make more of a difference. The colder it is and the faster you drive the less of a difference you will see in temperature as the under hood components can't get and stay hot as easily

Its funny pulling up to a honda that thinks he's all that. leave him standing in his tracks picking his jaw up off the ground that a lifted, armored jeep can beat him in a street race. I just need to find the time to mount my supercharger....

Did this on my ZJ and love it. I'd like to add a drain channel but it sits right behind the computer so you cannot go forward and going down takes you into the cabin. Driven through a few heavy down pours and no issues yet. The prefilter is supposed to help some water separation supposedly. Had to get a throttle body spacer to make the stock rubber 90 work with the PVC. Lastly I cut the black plastic so I don't have to remove the wipers when I clean the filter. Great mod!
@pro2am
@pro2am 6 лет назад
I think I would fab a small sheet metal baffle that sits just above the filter to shed water coming in from the top, make it fasten to the two upper scews holding it to the cowl. It wouldn't inhibit airflow and it would stop water from hitting the filter and potentially getting sucked in. I think the drains will take care of the rest.

That aluminum piping cools very quickly I would think with the header wrap it would hold hot air in rather than help cool intake Temps
@krusherkid

While the aluminum cools very quickly, it will also heat very quickly. The wrap helps keep the engine bay from heating up the air in the pipe.

I've got a decent size cam, header, and a couple other mods and I've had best luck with my snorkel for sure. This is a nice setup too if you can keep the rain, snow, and/or ice out. With a snorkel, you can turn the intake backwards to keep out heavy rain and dust as you drive.

I see 150-180 deg F intake air during the AZ summers here, and acceleration is sluggish, even with my appropriately geared 4.0 on 31s and 3.73 gears. Also, I have a 99, so the intake temp sensor is in a different spot and I think this causes the temps to be much higher due to heat soak from the exhaust manifold.

I’ve been looking at something like this for my LJ. I live, drive and wheel in very hot climates. In July my IAT was near 170•f while sitting in traffic!!! Having said that, the THOR is a poor design. Crappy filter doesn’t clean air for shit, and the filter is a pain in the ass to get to. If you get water that high, it’s a downhill shot straight into the motor… The Hauk river raider is by far the best choice

@jkvinsland
@jkvinsland 6 лет назад
A major problem with the stock box is that 'horn'...if you go through standing water fast enough, it can splash up into the engine bay and sheet against the underside of the hood due to the surface tension and that factory intake will suck it right in.

I LOVE THIS DESIGN ,and I want one. first off I have. Question , on your factory air box you had the intake horn opening type tube coming out of box turned differently than I’ve ever saw one. Toward the middle of the engine. Mine is turned toward the fender. Would not that tube be taking in ALOT more heat turned that way toward middle of the motor where a lot of hot air is versus the tube turned the correct normal way toward the fender drawing in air AWAY from the motor and gettin air more so from grill right at the light. Does this not skew your test and basically make it void ? I ask this cause even before I saw this Thor model or the Spectre I had a similar idea of a CAI with a tube there. And I think these designs are only true way to get air anywhere close to right above ambient temperature. ( besides the factory first Gen Nissan Titan which has its intake come from inside front driver fender well) I’m just wandering what the numbers would be if that horn shaped intake tube suckin air into intake box was turned the correct way like all ours are ? Don’t take me wrong I’m not trying to be smart butt. Just trying to get accurate test results. I love the way you thermal wrap everything and that you told everyone that they need to add other mods to amplify this mod ( like exhaust ) . Anyway just thought I’d run that but you and wandering also is the tube in kit designed to vector air and smooth it out like K&N , injen, and others are. Thank you.

would have run the test twice personally I think just due to the fact that if you did the factory box right after the new one likely the engine was hotter in general, but if it had the new setup had same temp air the second time(after running factory with higher temp) it would be fairly conclusive at that point. Overall I really like this setup and had the idea myself prior to finding some companies providing the stuff, I think I will do it to my cherokee eventually. Really hoping to get some improvements to mpg even if it is very minor. Also the placement makes a lot of space in the engine bay which is a nice bonus... good place to hide my crack cocaine

I think the IAT differences will be much higher sitting in traffic or on the trail at low speeds. At least some of air in the engine bay was being circulated at 55mph. The cold air intake was drawing air in from the outside anyway. I think this test minimizes the difference in IAT's. For every 10 degrees F of IAT drop, you make 1% more horsepower.

Still not as cold as one made in Alaska or Antarctica..... Sweet video though 👍🏽

I just installed one of these on my LJ, did anyone that installed it have issues with the silicone hose being stupidly tight to get on the TB and the intake pipe? Also i got a rubber grommet of some sort and i have no idea what that was for since it was only one, and the instructions never mentioned it.
@natebleepinjeep9564
@natebleepinjeep9564 6 лет назад
Matt Boelts I asked about the grommet, they said that some tjs and ljs came with a sensor in the intake tube. So you would drill a hole in the tube then slip the sensor and grommet in the hole.

Good to know, they might want to add that to the instructions. Also Mine came with a template so when I had to drill the hole for the filter it was easier.

what happens when you have to drive thru a heavy snow storm or cold start after a heavy snow storm and the vent gets plugged with snow?

wouldn't have made more sense to do the data on the old one before you took it off so you don't have to take the new one off again

Lift the wiper up before you lift up, set the wiper arm on the tab you lifted up to get them off, leave it in that position, then reinstall and just do the opposite... what a hack, and remember I made that Jeep...

should have moved the intake air temp sensor out of the manifold where it gets cooked by the header and into the intake

Is there something similar to this for the XJs? And were you reading the temp from the OBDll or did you have your own sensor?
