Cole Porter looks great considering the severity of his leg injuries from the horse riding accident; he is walking to the podium reasonably well. The Oscar to Aaron Copeland for The Heiress was richly deserved-his score was a highlight of the movie. In terms of On The Town, Sinatra and Kelly were angry that several of Leonard Bernstein's original songs were omitted from the final film.

Agreed. It appears Josephine and Geraldine (that bitch) were working remarkably well for Mr. Porter that night.

Cole Porter! Wow. Amazing today they give standing ovations to Pink for destroying Over the Rainbow and Cole just gets polite applause. Times have changed!

Anything goes was a sarcastic song making fun of cynical people that can't let go of the past You getting yourself in a fit because "before times good hur dur, now times bad singer lady ruin old son hur dur" while quoting it is the peak of irony

Paul Douglas was a big star that no one ever talks about, because he passed away not long after this. He's great in Angels in the Outfield.

I'm truly surprised at Cole Porter's ability to walk in 1950. It looks to be almost a normal gait. From his walk, you would never know he had a crippling accident in October, 1937.

I too was surprised Cole was walking, given the crippling accident he suffered. But then again, I did notice he looked like he was in pain, even sitting on that stool while handing out the music Oscars. I know he was in crippling pain from that accident for the rest of his life. He was told by doctors he needed his leg amputed, but he refused. He preferred to keep the leg and live with the pain, than become an amputee with limited mobility. Near the end of his life, he ended up getting both his legs amputed

It took many operations over the intervening years to get him to that point.

Wow, and that was Johnny Green at 1:29, the composer of Body and Soul, Out Of Nowhere and many great others! Nearly slipped my attention :)

Cole Porter was a genius and extremely talented he should have been treated as such for the rest of his life. It's such a shame that after his leg was amputated he stopped writing song and shows and hid away until he died. I wonder if he had a bunch of unreleased song written down somewhere and I also wonder if he would have lived any longer if he continued doing what he was born to do.

he didn't stop writing songs you idiot. He wrote many of his greatest songs after the incident. Stop talking, Start reading.

It should have been Conrad Salinger on the stage accepting the award for his On The Town orchestrations. Hayton was just the conductor and Roger Edens was just a sideguy
