How to set up a Vintage 1972 Coleman American Heritage Canvas Tent. Model # 8490-721. Can be set up by one person in about 20 minutes or less.
These tents are very rare because they usually succumb to mold and mildew, even if well cared for. This tent is still in mint condition in 2015. 43 years old and better than anything made today.
Sturdy galvanized steel telescoping poles. Tent stands alone or could be tied down for long-term living. The ground cover could be placed on top as a rain fly, more for sun protection than rain. As long as you don't touch the inside of the tent it won't leak.

Back in the 50's 60's and 70's before TV people spent more time outdoors. The skills of hiking, camping, tenting, vegetable gardening, fishing, etc.. were common knowledge passed on from parents to children, or you learned them as a Boy Scout or Girl Scout at the local church. There were no "user guides" or "instruction manuals". I still have my Boy Scout Handbook from 60 years ago. Thanks to You Tube for preserving some of the lost wisdom.

Thanks, just got one of theses tents from an old girlfriend, her parents estate sale. They passed , but were avid campers in their day. She was going to throw it out, I said NOOOO ! I want it, she wouldn't take any $ for it. Just took it out today to see what I have (make sure all parts were there etc) In just about perfect condition!! Googled your u tube video....made it real simple to set up !! Thank You so much. Awesome tent...going into the Sierras tomorrow

It's a shame that tent manufacturers stopped making these great tents!

There are still a few companies making canvas wall tents. They are useful for semi-permanent structures or people living in them for long periods in cold climates. No mass production companies though, which would make them affordable. These cotton canvas recreational tents that are in storage for most of the year almost always rotted out with time. Even a relatively small section rotting made the tent worthless. I agree with you, it is a shame. The ambiance in these tents can't be matched with polyester or nylon.

Great video! I grew-up with this tent at Lake Powell. I just got it out of my Dad's attic and thinking about using it for an upcoming US Road Trip (which will all be on video). And it took me forever to figure out the pole order.

we have this same tent!!! Broke one of the yellow male end fittings off the center support upright. we made a new end cap using a wooden knob with a heavy duty screw.

Welcome to the club! See you by the lake. I found this one at a yard sale for $20 and sold it on eBay for $550 plus shipping. Coleman is a collectors item.This video was in the listing. Then I found a similar one at a yard sale and talked them down to $10. I'm keeping the second one.

Yes. I had a link to this video in the eBay listing. It took about 3 months to sell. I had quite a few low offers, but I held out. Usually these tents have something wrong like missing poles, tears, or dry rot. I just did a search on eBay for canvas wall tents that were sold. The vintage ones that aren't Coleman are selling for $200 to $250. But there is usually something wrong with them or they aren't Coleman. Coleman is a very collectible name, if any of there stuff is old and good condition it brings a premium price.

Gee-wow~ mine is almost identical, made by Morsan"s on Long Island, N Y, back in 69 for the contractors of the Woodstock productiion. They bought dozens,with the proviso that they could return them, after the show, for a refund. Well, many were trashed, burnt, or otherwise rendered unusable, so Morsan had a big parking lot sale, 'AS-IS"I got one, still in the box, never opened, and it has served admirably for my family camping trips and now as a hunting camp ever since. It has withstood rain, wind, hail, snow and below zero temps. Here in Montana, the conditions can get fierce!

no, I think it would be quite difficult to set one up from the inside. I have some replacement poles. Does yours set up like this one?
@scottf9044

I have a similar tent without poles. Do you know how many feet of poles you have total? The poles that go the length of the tent is obviously easy to figure out. Looks like your center pole is about 8' tall? And your corner poles are about 6' long? Does that sound right?
@donrad
@donrad 3 года назад
That sounds about right. Do an internet search for "replacement tent tarp poles" or telescoping tent poles. Amazon and Walmart carry a good selection. They come adjustable in sections or telescoping to make various lengths. If your handy you could make some using metal electrical conduit with unions and rubber feet. Build to fit as you put the tent up with a tubing cutter.

@@donrad I checked out conduit today. That stuff is quite a bit heavier. Too heavy for me.

@donrad
@donrad 9 лет назад
Dustin Huneke They don't have to connect anywhere in particular. They can be moved to adjust the tension of the tent roof and walls. For added stability a person could put them where the stakes are driven into the floor.

Do you know anything about model 8480-740? I think it’s from the 70’s. But I can’t figure it out. Need help. Coleman couldn’t help me.

we have the same tent but alot of the plastic nipples and connectors are broke. is there anywhere that sells or builds these poles??
@donrad
@donrad 7 лет назад
For the upright poles search eBay for "telescoping tent poles", they cost about $15 delivered. The plastic nipples do not need to be centered on the ends; you could use electrical tape and/or glue to attach plastic or metal nipples to the sides of the ends if your a handyman. **what do you mean by "connectors?" I have some of the original poles that came with this model of tent. If you are wanting to restore your tent to original condition, I would sell them for $15 each PLUS delivery cost. My email is don.radina@gmail.com.

If it doesn't have any mold or rot, there are a lot of people who love these old tents. This one sold on eBay for over $500 plus shipping. Anything old Coleman is highly collectible.

@donrad
@donrad 8 лет назад
There are some preppers and reinactors who just want the canvas. They use ropes strung between trees and tree branches. When your packing into the wilderness you don't want poles.

@@killercricketman Nope. Have You? That seems like it would be a pain having that canvas on top of you while trying to set it up, With the weight of this tent I would think the poles would be hard on the floor also.
