Whether you agree or disagree with his views, Coleman exudes authenticity & always provides hearty food for thought while leaving his emotions to one side. That's SO refreshing and hope-inspiring during today's emotionally reactive group-think culture.

I'm sorry but I don't eat bullshit. He cherry-picked some studies and used them to make his argument. He was spoon-fed the questions for this interview, much like the interview he did for the Rubin Report. He's embraced by White conservatives who agree with his views because it makes them feel good about ignoring institutional and systemic racism. His definition of systemic racism is incorrect because it starts from childhood. It's passed down from parent to child and those children enter the workforce and perpetuate it. From the Koch brothers to the GOP all the way down to the Young Republicans. Racism starts at home.

he seems to have a superficial understanding of politics. He's still young, so he doesn't get it. politics is about winning the people in the middle who are not aware of all the facts. Both the right and the left exaggerate or try to demonize the other side in order to get political power. I think he's from this lalaland where he thinks having facts will make a difference. Facts don't matter in politics. Most ppl know there is no systemic racism or police brutality, but they will allow others to express it. Most republicans know very well undocumented immigrants are taking ppls jobs or that having an abortion is not killing a baby if done at an early stage. Welcome to the real world, buddy

It was refreshing to see the interviewer admit when she didn't understand a word, concept or a bit of statistics. For example: -the concept of eugenics. -the stats re race, cultural norms, wealth & income, crime & the police and so on. It's so important to understand the difference between per capita vs group and population averages. -the term 'silo'. -understanding how common a 1 in a billion thing can be given a baseline population of 350 million. It's quite shocking how most people don't understand basic statistics. So, anytime a host will ask for clarification and help the audience get better acquainted with statistical data, the better. Better to ask & go in depth into a particular issue than pretend to understand, as most mainstream hosts will do, and leave the issue hanging without proper analysis. So, good for you for asking when you didn't quite understand a particular term or concept.

I wouldn't necessarily infer from her questions that she didn't understand what he was saying or referring to. The purpose of asking a question, for an interviewer, is often to get the host to explain something for the benefit of the viewers when they judge that some viewers may require more clarification. And I think she may have been too polite to make this point in response to you, lol.

I only recently learned about Coleman Hughes (and this channel!) and I have to say, I am blown away by his presence, his calm confidence and the way he presents his facts. I love that he appears to be very fact based and doesn't tow a conservative or liberal line, instead letting the facts speak for themselves. I also really appreciate Michelle Carroll's calm interview style and courage to ask what something means, instead of assuming she knows what it means. The importance of that can't be understated; even if she does know what it means she doesn't assume her viewers do and it allows the interviewee to explain it in their own words. Great stuff, definitely a fan.

Wow, great conversation. As a Canadian that watches American politics obviously from a distance, I've always been shocked at how polarized and antagonistic and combative and ideological most political discussions are in the mainstream u.s. Media. They never get to the point of reasonable conversation because no one is listening to anyone and most people just simply get entrenched in their positions and in demonizing the other side. This rational level-headed discussion - - where two people in a conversation are curious to listen, think and to explore - - is so refreshing and important.

@22:50 he mentions a Papa Johns incident Back in high school days, I was at a party and in a group of 5 or 6 people just talking about whatever. One of the kids was black and very small percentage of population in my town. I steered the conversation to open up his thoughts on how he is treated as a black man in a small town, so we start getting into issues of race. I was interested to hear his insight into being black that I just don't get exposed to at all. So during the conversation, he was talking and said something that I never forgot. During the course of his speaking, he comes around to say that whites are, to at least a small degree, inherently racist. He is "OK" with that, as it is something he has just gotten used to. He went on to say that, he has many white friends and they all great. But, sooner or later he knows they will let slip how they really feel about blacks and reveal themselves as the racist he knows them to be. At that point, it became very obvious that he was most certainly projecting race into his encounters with whites and then began seeking behavior that supported his predetermined belief. I have no doubt that he has experienced racist whites in his life, but he just WAITS for them to show it so he could have that "gotcha" moment with himself. At that point, I went for another beer or something and just got away from him. I saw him as an awkward moment away from being in a racially charged issue at any given time and just not interested in that.

Coleman Hughes makes some very interesting points, but I would like to add I go to church to worship and praise God and to hear God's word. I do not go to church to be indoctrinated about ideas of white privilege and systemic racism. Many churches are invested in social justice movements, but the real message is about the gospel and our freedom in Christ. Here is what I think about white guilt: These ideas are divisive, deceptive, and demeaning to all racial groups. Christ died once and for all to set us free from all of our sins. These ideas try to enslave people again. We are all one in Christ. In fact, our only hope for unity is in Christ. He is our true identity before race or anything else, and He loves our diversity as we are all created in His image. Racism (believing in the superiority of one's racial identity over others) is sinful but it is not unique to any one group of people. As Christians of any cultural/racial group, we are called to generously give to people in need and to pray for our country. We further respect government leaders and abide by the rule of law. Finally, we are grateful for the way our freedoms are enumerated in the Preamble and protected under the Bill of Rights within the remarkable living document of the Constitution. www.gotquestions.org/white-privilege.html

She asked " How do you feel about the 'N-Word'?", so he responded with a brief etymology of the word "niggardly", and said the fact there's a Wikipedia page dedicated to scandals around people saying "niggardly" shows that there is an irrational sensitivity about the N-word prevalent in society. I think that scandal shows that many people are either unfamiliar with the word niggardly, or they have a panic response around issues of racism, which means they can't just calmly explain a simple word sounding similar to a racial slur, they fire a person instead. I think that's an anxiety around Race as a subject, not an irrationality about a racial slur.

Eugenics is a touchy subject these days. I wrote a sci fi book about clones thinking that such a subject was not as taboo, with mainstream science programs discussing CRISPR and the potential for designer babies or medicinal benefits such as 'programed' immunity to disease. In the past, eugenics talk was primarily surrounding controlled breeding versus genetically engineered DNA. It has a bad past, eugenics, but the institution of psychology worldwide has blood stained hands in regards to lobotomies for example. Despite this, psychology and neuroscience have made giant leaps in practical application. Lobotomies are far from witch burning, and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation machines are leaps above your typical pharmaceuticals like anti-depressants or anti-psychotics. Perhaps eugenics could follow a less bloody/amoral pattern in the future.

I agree with Coleman. Culture must come into play. Take for example the Black child and different colored dolls exercise. Lets say the culture the child grew up in and the wider cultural context within which their culture exists has more of a role to play in the causes of the childs condition. You then trace the child’s cultural history back a number of hundred years to overstand what experiences came together to cause such a condition. Then staring back at you are the same causes you disagreed with in favor of ‘culture’ itself as a cause. kmt.

53:20 the issue of victims of white murder being solved better than victims of black murder has the 'snitches get stitches' variable that is disproportionately evident in black communities. The cause of this police mistrust may very well originate from racist policing, especially pre-civil rights era & the period afterwards. But, the level of police racism today is in no way proportional to those bad old days. Today, black communities have to address this reactionary response of not co-operating with the police and end this anti-snitching attitude. How do we do this? Start by being truthful about the degree of not co-operation police face in investigations in the black community. Black community leaders have to make co-operating a virtue. End the drug war. Stop the stranglehold of street gangs who only subsist because they dominate a drug market where the prices are artificially elevated due to this prohibition. 1:20:00 I see here, Hughes does address these issues. Not only are more unarmed white people shot by the police, but, black cops are more likely to shoot unarmed people, both black and white. Police shooting unarmed people is not only non-racist, but the numbers are miniscule compared to the civilian rate.

Actually "culture" is the appropriate term. It comes from the Latin term "cultus" - which included the religious and social values of the society that influence the choices of the people. The point is that these values and choices influence outcomes. Coleman Hughes is right - nobody has a choice in the culture into which they are born. We all do have to deal with the consequences of this. In this era where we can read about choices and consequences, we can all learn to evaluate the choices we make and that will influence our individual outcomes. Sometimes that means making different choices than our neighbors.

he seems to have a superficial understanding of politics. @spot light have a read through some of the research into perceptions of rascism within different cultural groups within the black community. It's interesting reading, it highlights the differences between afro-caribbean and afro-american perceptions of rascism as well as perceptions of status within society as a whole. I am sure that there are discrimination complaints that are being dealt with, complaints that in this age shouldn't happen 😡 . But the fact that there is an accountable avenue for them to be dealt with should be viewed as a positive step.

spot light in just about every interview where he touches on this topic he absolutely acknowledges white racism exists in america today - what you just said shows how ignorant you are. he uses data and statistics to support why he thinks what he does and defends it soundly with evidence. yet here you are, making a mindless claim that he’s an uncle tom who’s sole purpose is to defend white people...you’re insulting and we can only hope for a world where less people think like you, and more people engage in critical thought as coleman does.
