Hey y'all! I'm happy to finally be sharing this video. The majority of the video was already completed prior to Part 2 premiering, but I went back and added some of the context and footage from it to emphasize some points. This video analyzes Colin's characterization throughout all three seasons, his behavioral patterns, his character arc and the recurring themes brought up within his storyline. Let me know what you think of this video and of Colin down below and tell me what you'd like to see next!

I don’t care what the popular discourse around the season is… Colin is the best romantic lead. I love that the most romantic, loving, purposeful, yet emotionally complex lead is for Penelope, a plus-sized, ambitious, morally gray and talented woman in a society that would prefer she stay against the wall. This is MY favorite season.

I feel most look at him from a surface level. And they may not understand the subtlety the actor brings to him. Sometimes when people bring up the same questions even if they are answered on the show, it makes me worry if we are not teaching media literacy as much as we used to.

I keep saying Luke Newton`s acting is most reminiscent, to me, of old period dramas I grew up watching. Hence, my love for the character of Colin and his arc. He`s both NOTHING like a Bridgerton male lead ought to be and very much like the men in those period dramas I mentioned. I am firmly convinced that, in say 5 years time, people will be raving about Colin as a character and a male lead. Not to mention, the fact that they finally gave us a morally gray female lead who perhaps doesn`t fit this blasted society`s standard of beauty, and had her end up with a sociable, sensitive lover boy...that`ll always warm my heart. She was able to stand on her own and also gain the most respect out of all heroines Bridgerton had thus far.

I said it once and I'll say it until the end of time - Colin's simple "you wanna marry me or what?" is *infinitely* more romantic than Simon or Anthony or George's anguished (i.e. emotionally constipated) declarations. Give me a man who knows what he wants and _goes for it_ without tying himself into knots about it until he's screaming at his supposed "love." Dear Men: hold out your hand and say "yo, let's do this, babe" with a big doofy grin on your face, don't shout about how much it _hurts_ you to love me. o_O Pass on that ish. Helps that I've been with my golden retriever sweetie for 19 years now. ;) We have an anniversary season (Mar 10 thru May 5) because we can't remember when we "officially" started dating, we were just pretty instantly in the zone. Sometimes romance is just being besties straight off.

Absolutely. I wonder how many of the naysayers are very young and haven't realized that in real life, rakes with low emotional intelligence do not in fact make good partners. Once you've lived some life, you understand how rare and precious the Colins of the world are.

I liked them all, because they all fit the characters struggles and hang-ups. It makes since with all 3 characters that you mentioned don't belive that they deserve the love that they are given and want. So, they are trying to resist what they want. Anthony trying to never hurt anyone like with a his death , because he believes he won't live past the age that his fathered died.

My favorite line that really shows who Colin is is from when he and Pen are speaking in the church, and he says “We shall officially be married.” He’s such a smooshy romantic that he’s essentially considered himself married to Pen since she admitted that she wanted to be more than friends. They’ve already consummated this marriage, they already have a house. To him the deed is all done save a seal of approval from the CoE. The situation with Marina really messed him up, as first heartbreaks have a tendency to do. It does reflect how he lashes out at Pen after finding out about her own lies. But it wasn’t Marina being pregnant that broke his heart, it was that she lied about loving him. So Pen making it clear that even though she has lied about some things, she is not lying when she says she loves him. That’s what gets through to him even when they’re still fighting.

That is so odd to me. Sure, his looks were lustful, but I didn't find Anthony likeable until Season 3. I don't see what people are going on about. Colin is my favorite Bridgerton. I kept saying he ignores the rules with Pen. Grabbing her hand, pulling her into rooms and closing the door. He never even signs her dance card. I noticed how fast he moved after the carriage scene as well. By the next morning he already had the house lined up and had gotten her ring to the jewler to be sized. Because he gave her the ring the day after he shows her the house. I envisioned him waking Violet up early to get the ring and get it to the jewler 😂. Thanks for the content.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that notices but how come is it that he only did this with Pen? With Marina, he was following social protocols to a certain extent but with Pen, he didn’t care. Can someone dissect this for me?
@Prairiepagan316
@Prairiepagan316 7 дней назад
@monicacervera2252 I feel it is because he doesn't see her like he sees everyone else. He even says, " You are Pen. You don't count. " He honestly thinks she is just different than the rest of the Ton. I feel like when they are on the sidelines poking fun at everyone, they are both sort of on the same "team," them against everyone else. Both of them are overlooked by their families and not taken seriously by the Ton. In my mind, he reasons that he shouldn't get judged for being alone with her because it is so "obvious" that nothing would ever happen between them. He never got awkward or flustered with Marina or any of the other women. Because he didn't have any dog in the fight with them. He was attracted to Marina and the other women, but he couldn't stay away from Pen. Can you imagine Anthony telling him to not go see Pen? Colin bribed a maid so he could see her. He didn't make that effort with Marina. Just my thoughts.

I feel like I am fighting for my life on TikTok sometimes with those kinds of posts! Luke Newton acted this so purposefully - everything he does with Colin has been intentional and you can always see him trying to work through a lot of complex emotions on his face. @michellebenincasa6872
@michellebenincasa6872 8 дней назад
I believe Colin's attempts to find connection, meaning, and purpose, his class clown or hero personas, and his relationship issues all through the show are tied up in a kind of trauma reaction to losing his father and his mother's deep grief/depression at an impressionable age. These could all easily be explained as possible reactions to abandonment issues if the initial loss happened when he was old enough to remember but not enough to fix anything. Since he couldn't save his father or cure his mother's grief, the best he could do is entertain everyone and make them as safe and happy as possible with the tools available to a young boy. He may not have been able to progress past that until the family trauma had healed more through time passing and the eventual marriages of his older sister and brother (those relationships helped each sibling deal with their trauma, so they could be better help to Colin by example). It's obvious to me that Colin craves connection and commitment for roughly the same reason Anthony ran screaming from it for years. Because the tragic sudden loss of their father and their mother's extreme complicated grief took part of their childhood and made them all grow up too fast in some ways while stunting their development in others. Daphne and Anthony became de facto parents and head of household even while Daphne hadn't yet entered puberty and Anthony had only just reached his majority, years before either should have been expected to shoulder these burdens. Colin couldn't take on either role, so he became everyone's entertainment, their respite. But who comforts the comforting one? No one. Who respects the hard work behind entertaining everyone? No one. So he gave without anyone realizing how much he gave, worked for years with no one seeing that it was work. Emotional labour is a real thing deserving respect, but Colin and Benedict did so much of it while being passed by like wallpaper. It's frustrating.

Honestly, it’s mostly Eloise that gives him shit for his travel stories. It’s sad because she’s the closest in age to him so he is likely closer to her than to some of the others and yet she consistently burns him with snide remarks all because she is so jealous she cannot do the same because she’s a woman. Yes, the patriarchy sucks and Eloise has a reason to be angry about it, but not at the expense of your brother girl. Damn.

@@vanessarussell7048i think deep down Penelope knew if it was her who told him about Marina's pregnancy, he would have definitely confronted marina and she would have shown her weak and distressed side, which would made him to marry marina because of his hero complex nature and would have regretted his decision rest of his life. That's the last thing Penelope would want to do, specially when she was so much enamored by Colin at that time. I think even if she doesn't sees herself having any kind of future with Colin, deep down there was little bit hope of him returning those feelings to her. Him being married would completely erase all possibilities she had hoped for their future.

Penelope went after him in the corridor to tell him first lightly that Marina loves another and he diminished that by saying he also "flirted with many so it'd be hypocritical of him to think less of Marina due to her previous love" - he didn't let later Penelope clarify that this case is different instead he praised her as a friend but didn't put any value in her light warning. Any other discussion between them was later disrupted by Marina. But we saw how he didn't listen to being let down delicately. He was sure he knew what was real love and Marina played with his romantic side well to suit her goal.

This analysis is perfection. I think you’re seeing his sex/intimacy refusal exactly as the writers want us to see it. I wished for some dialogue from him “I just got you and it feels like I lost you” in reckoning WD reveal. He clearly was grieving. I didn’t code it as trauma response initially but you nailed it. I think they could have downplayed the jealousy angle a bit… as Colin is not immature. His insecurity leads to desperation for feeling safe and secure again asap (get out of the danger) which he singularly pursues his role as protector and provider. I think jealous was the smallest emotion he felt toward Pen/WD. The writers could have smoothed that out better for a more authentic Colin. I also wish he would have gotten a line when Pen said “what’s holding you back from kissing me” and he said “I don’t know” ack! I think Colin would know… and I’m sure he would say something beautiful about loneliness and connection and trust and intimacy that also would have made Pen realize that she pushed him to this place. She of all people should understand and respect why Colin made those choices.

Excellent analysis, I think Colin is somewhat misunderstood in the fandom but he has been my favorite character throughout the show and I was happy to see his progression in s3, at first I felt the show did him dirty by sort of making him the bad guy when it came to the LW reveal, but after thinking about it I realized I was only perceiving this through the fandom reaction, the show itself gave him valid reasons to be upset. Like for example, we can tell by the wedding he forgave Penelope for all the things she wrote and for lying to him, but the queen literally crashing his wedding and threating his family made him adamant about her need to stop publishing, he did not "flip flop" as some people put it, it's that perception of such present danger that made him unable to let it go. So yeah I think Colin has an interesting arc and it simply require the audience to be pay attention to the finer details.

This is how I felt about Colin since I started watching clips of Penelope and Colin's relationship on RU-vid. I then decided to watch all of the seasons and noticed how kind he truly is, but often overlooked. You were able to vocalize and express all the things I have felt about Colin, especially noticing how much hate he's been receiving. You noticed some of the most important points about Colin. The conversation he had with Violet was the most touching moment for me in season 3. The way she knew her son and wanted the best for him. I also liked the fact that you brought up the scene where he apologizes to Mondrich. This scene stood out to me because he doesn't only want to please his lovers, but everyone he cares about. You did such a beautiful job and you made my eyes watery. I don't think it's emphasize enough how fortunate it would be to have people around like Colin. Penelope fell in love with him because she knew exactly that he had a good heart. I laughed when Eloise mentioned the travels at first, but then it started bothering me how much she dismisses him. I know people associate emotional labor with Benedict and while I agree, I feel people underestimate the emotional labor Colin has. He feels deeply which adds to his empathy to people. He is constantly asking if there is something wrong when he sees his loved ones are upset. He is trying to listen to people, but he can’t read people’s minds. It makes sense that he may misinterpret some things like in episode 5 when he thinks Penelope having a panic attack is about their engagement. I feel he offers her an out here because he feels like he rushed her and does not want her in a loveless marriage. It hurt that she offered an annulment for the same reasons because he deeply loves her and as you said is worried she is going to leave him. Violet explains that “he rarely puts himself first”. People misunderstand that his travels is the only time he puts himself first. His travels are more than just an escape. He doesn’t have to be what people want to be. He does not have to worry about what everyone is going through. As soon as he comes back, he goes back to what Anthony expected him to be. He is comparing himself to his brothers which was a conflict in the book. He is making sure his family is taken care of. Benedict shows his emotional labor in a different way and is often overlooked as well. It feels like there is this cycle of insecurity and trauma that is being passed on and why each child struggles to find their purpose.

Just wondering, it was very obvious how Edmund's death affected Anthony as the 1st born, but how has it affected Colin & Benedict? Could his insecurity & hero complex be related to losing his father. Maybe as a middle son, this made him more sensitive/nurturing towards his younger siblings
@gabrielleduplessis7388
@gabrielleduplessis7388 7 дней назад
@@kellyvalence5323 for Edmund, I even see Gregory, even though he did not know his dad well, miss the idea of him. Edmund is this symbol that hangs over everyone’s heads. You see it more with the first four, but they idolize their parents’ love story and that becomes the basis on what they look for even if it is not practical which can have its positives or negatives. As for Anthony, I feel he starts this new cycle of trauma. He puts pressure on daphne to get married to the point he doesn’t listen to her or trust her decisions or instincts. With Benedict, he looks down on his art and can be very mean to him and I feel he was mean to half of his siblings. With Colin, like Sammy said, he did not take him seriously, put ideas in his head that Colin should go to brothels and not have this silly sentiment. Much of Anthony’s anger and grief comes from the loss of their father which may explain why he is hard and mean to his siblings, but doesn’t fully justify this. His words take root and it hurts. He is the reason why Bendetict is lost and not happy. He is directionless once Bendetict found out he did not earn his place at art school because of Anthony, he loses it. While nice, it feels like it is too late considering how Anthony belittle and demeaned him in a way. Again, Daphne almost had to marry an abusive man because of Anthony. And her feeling like she doesn’t have a voice, even with him set up some insecurities with her. And with Colin, part of him having to be the man society wants him to be stemmed from Anthony’s words to him, especially after the announcement of his engagement with marina. Sorry if I am not explaining it well and I know this was a long reply.

Everything we see this season has clearly been building up from the first episode of season 1, as you explained so well. Even more interesting is when people dislike him for his declaration at the Butterfly Ball, when he basically says he'd be happy if his greatest purpose in life was her. This is my complaint with this season. It was entertaining & I enjoyed that Pen had more agency in the LW reveal.... BUT the writers are always sacrificing Colin's character to create more drama in the show. It started with the "I'd never court her" to his friends. In the book, it's I'm not marrying her to his brothers & it's in response to his mother pushing that as a prospect (so it's much more understandable). In the books her forgives Whistledown in the space of a carriage ride. I don't think he would have said "entrapment" to her, because he's not the type to say something hurtful just because he's hurt. The Bridgerton discourse online makes me feel like the gifted kid in middle school English class again, while we’re reading short stories. I really didn’t think this show was so advanced to get even the basic gist of. In fact, one of the things I find so fun and charming about the show is how *obvious* they are when placing their visual symbolism, foreshadowing, etc., and when embarking upon storytelling tropes. Because they make it so in-your-face and comfortably familiar while still crafting episodes and storylines that keep you entertained throughout. If there wasn’t so much sex, I could see high school English teachers using this show to study literary concepts. It reminds me of my junior English teacher spending a unit on romance writing (the formulas, archetypes, tropes, etc.). This is also the kind of story you can practice applying different types of literary criticism to, particularly because of the way the show interacts with gender, race, and privilege. There is so much one can talk about with the genre-bending AU history component, alone. Anyway, I think the *magnitude* of the confused responses to the show is indicative of how many people watch this show with their phone out, because half of the story in this show is not in the dialogue. It is in the camera choices and the facial expressions and the positioning of people in relation to each other, etc. Also, there is the same loud lack of empathy for the characters (and therefore a refusal to understand the story) that I see in other areas of social media. I am constantly bewildered by people’s inability to picture themselves in a situation and imagine the nuance of real life. You see it all the time when people criticize how someone reacted to a shocking event in a viral clip, for example. These are the same people who see or hear about a guy harassing a woman in public and get mad at her that she didn’t loudly tell him to leave her alone (or get mad that she DID brush him off, when “Clearly, he meant no harm“). So maybe we all just tend to be loud in our expressions of non-empathy on social media, so that is what is loudest here, too. Maybe it isn’t actually disproportionate at all. After all, most people who are just satisfied with something don’t leave any online review at all. Sorry for the rant, but I really feel like a huge amount of what’s going on in the “fandom” reaction to Bridgerton is actually just the way everyone is about everything these days, and it’s depressing. Critical thinking, patience, nuance, “big picture” thinking, empathy… these are all basic habits that even watching a TV show employs, but they seem to be atrophying skills.

It would've helped the story move forward more flawlessly to have at least one more intimate Polin moment (not in the midst of a ball) showing that Colin truly forgave Penelope. His final declaration to her, was absolutely stunning though.

First, I don’t think the comments of him being young is not about how serious he is. Him being young is that he doesn’t fully grasp between a crush and love. He hasn’t learned what goes into a marriage yet. He idolizes his parents’ relationship and he projects it onto his potential relationships. I do agree that he is naive and what is sad is how the family keeps him and daphne as well as Eloise sheltered and naive. They only teach them when they are stuck in a corner and have to learn about people’s true intentions or what the world is really like. Take it from someone who deals with it. Even as an adult, people see me as innocent and try to keep me that way. For example, when I ask about something “odd”, “i get oh you sweet innocent child”. That is what happens when people don’t want to teach me and only see me as naive and innocent. I feel this happened with Colin and it makes sense why Colin travels to find himself and explore the world without people interfering. I like that his maturity comes finding things out himself. And I feel him being friends with Penelope helped not only ground him, but allowed him to see himself in another person’s eyes. I don’t mean the rose tinted glasses, but finally someone sees the true him. And this continues in season 3.

Agree with this! During S3 Ep 1 he even says that what he (platonically) liked about Penelope is her cleverness and perspective on the world.

Excellent analysis Sammy. I have to be honest, at first the character of Colin never caught my attention, but then the third season came and everything changed. For the first few episodes I was captivated by Penelope, how extremely beautiful she looked and what a good actress Nicola was portraying her. But as the series progressed (specifically starting with episode 2) I found myself totally fascinated by Colin and Luke's brilliant performance. As a person as "psychotic" as you, I was simply delighted and surprised by how well developed Colin was, every gesture, every look, every micro expression and the intensity with which he expressed his feelings made me fall in love with his character. It's incredible that with so little screen time, they gave us so much emotion. Although my hunger for Polin is still not filled, I am quite happy with what they gave us and I hope that at least in the fourth season they give us a little more of them because I love them so much.

You just put perfectly into words what I have been arguing with people in RU-vid comments for weeks over. Every time I see someone say he’s a flat character one of my hairs turn grey. Every time I see someone say his arc in season 3 makes no sense I lose a year off my life. He is one of the most interesting male leads I have ever come across, hugely because so many of his attributes are so often in media attributed to women. Those traits plus the time period plus his hero complex is just so scrumptious. Luke Newton is so masterful at his work and is a huge part of why it is possible for a 55 minute video to be made analyzing the character he plays. I’m gonna start replying to Colin hate with simply a link of this video lmaoo

Fabulous analysis, succinct but well reasoned and comprehensive! I'm so sick of people saying Luke can't act or comparing him to Johnny and expecting the same thing - Colin is a different person, he's so much more internal and compassionate than Anthony, and Luke portrays him wonderfully. They have different traumas and obstacles to overcome, and go about it in totally different ways. If all the men were the same, the show would get stale very fast! As many other comments have said, in real life, any woman with any sense would always go for Colin (romantic, steadfast, emotionally intelligent) over one of the emotionally unavailable rakes, and its nice to see that on screen as desirable, rather than only tortured bad boys.

You summed up Colin in the first minute of this video! Everyone that has been criticizing this season didn’t rewatch the first two to really get the full scope of how both he & pen were searching for themselves & found it in each other! Both of them being third children they were searching for belonging. This season was so much more than a love story it was a true coming of age story for them both! Also Sammy you are totally my kind of gal! We are besties in my head 😂😂 great video!

I like when people finally get it. The hot takes the past few days have been rather confusing, making me question if we watched the same thing. S3 was so deep. So well thought out and authentic to both characters.

I've been reading the takes of a girl called nostalgicmiscellaneous at tumblr and she nails it Colin's personality in my opinion. Just like your video. I'm glad more people are getting that he related what he has with Pen different than just sex, with her it was special and for the first time he felt complete, so he will not make love to her while he still has conflicted/negative feelings about the situation. He clearly loves and desires her but he's still working on his own issues too, he was feeling useless and ashamed of his envy, insecure about not being worth of her.

Thank you! His character is so appealing yet so complex and not flat.. It has volume, his own ups and downs, and it makes sense. Especially with the brilliant performance of Luke N. It is so amazing how lil touches make the character so believable Thank you! Your analysis is such a joy every time😊

Beautifully said !!!!! And no, it’s not hard to understand. it’s sad that there are people who have decided to misunderstand Colin. If anyone paid attention to the show, they’d clearly understand the character. It’s all there. Everything we needed to know was laid out from season 1

Great character analysis. Colin is a different hero than what we’ve seen on TV. But it felt like a breath of fresh air to see someone with flaws, sensitivity and self esteem issues. He was so sweet and romantic, season 3 ended up being my favourite. I wish he had a slightly larger role in season 1 and 2 but it worked as you have listed to show the kind of person he is and the growth he went through.

Girl! I know I was harsh on you on your last video, but this might be one of the BEST character breakdowns I've ever seen. I do still wish we got more of his story in part 2, but this helped me see some of S3 with a new perspective.

You all can take your stoic and haredened toxic male lead , I will choose my sweet, insecure and sensitive Colin Bridgerton who is so intune with his sensitivity that can't help but always starts to tears up in anger when it comes to love for his wife. The ultimate Green flag ✨✨

I don’t understand why some people say that Colin’s character wasn’t well-developed in terms of personality and that the narrative didn’t help in understanding him, when all of this is easy to detect by paying attention to his gestures, words, and actions. I suppose some people need a character to say, "Oh, Colin is an insecure man with a hero complex, etc" to understand. In fact, Anthony, Violet, Marina, Daphne and even Pen/LW describe Colin in their dialogues at several moments. So, thank you for this beautiful analysis and video. I love Colin, and he is my favorite along with Penelope.

I went from thinking he's boring to believing he was the most realistic romantic lead of all. He is so well written, everything he says or does, this season felt more like Colin's own life story and how his familal interactions shaped him as a grown up. It's interesting to watch such a character

Omg yes!! This is why I struggle to understand why so many people say he’s such a poorly developed character and all of his feelings come out of nowhere. He’s such a great representation of an “inward-directed” character, but he has made so many comments and had so many actions that give us insight into what he’s feeling/going through. As well as how caring, sensitive and romantic he is at heart. I really loved Colin Bridgerton as a character 🤍

I've noticed everything you said about Colin, and I've always thought he was such a beautiful character and a relatable one as well that's the beauty of season 3 for me ,the main characters start off with not fully accepting or knowing themselves fully which is something you experience in your 20s especially with characteristics of kindness, sensitivity and not being considered cool just because you don't want to live a meaningless or purposeless life❤so watching Penelope and Colin Trying to navigate those challenges gives me courage to stay my " uncool" ,sensitive and kind self and I will find what I'm looking for

Thank you for explaining Colin Bridgerton so clearly. I think he is the most misunderstood of the brothers because of his sensitive nature. When you take time to understand who he is, you understand why he is so drawn to Penelope. Alot people look at them based on looks, but their connection is beyond that, that is why he pursued her once he became aware of his feelings.

I love love love this deep dive into Colin’s persona. His character deserves this attention and I think it’s sad he doesn’t get much screen time even in his own season. I guess I’m frustrated about how they make him fail to solve anything at every turn especially when it comes to him facing Cressida’s blackmailing Penelope. The writers of the show couldn’t offer him a dignified performance in that scene where he begs Cressida for mercy towards his wife. I dislike it because it’s very dissimilar to his book character where he actually does something special and worthy for Penelope in public. Let him win for once man. Him standing up for Pen against Portia may have been the only thing they afforded him this entire show. Nevertheless I love how Luke Newton portrays him so beautifully throughout the series. The emotions shown through his eyes were incredible.

Great analysis. I noticed that the majority of his character values are seen in clips from S1&2, with just a few in S3. I stand by that Colin could be my favourite character, but in S3 he was written too subtly and not given enough time to let Colin's personality show through to the average viewer.

Your reasoning at why he didn’t want to be intimate with Pen when they were fighting? Brilliant. I loved him reading Pen’s letters. Love that the stack from her was as many as everyone else’s combined. Also the fact that the others were tightly bound and Pen’s was loosely bound. He’d read her’s multiple times. GREAT VIDEO!
