Rififi has one of the greatest, maybe even the greatest, heists ever filmed. I went to Greece about 5 years ago and made a point of visiting the Athens First Cemetery and visiting Dassin's grave -- he's buried in Melina Mecouri's plot. It was not an easy walk! Lots of hills and winding streets and if you've ever seen the street signs of Athens they're often so faded or weatherbeaten that you can barely read them! I also saw something that makes me laugh to this day: a priest walking around the tombs, blessing a few and suddenly he stops and pulls out his phone and starts tapping away!

Him using the camera just to vlog and take the entire production over is so funny no matter how serious he gets

_The Colour of Paradise_ is a Persian film I'd seen years ago, and it's fantastic.

The way he talks about the woman at the video store. I'm missing that. I was always so appreciative of the curators of films. Video stores allowed for those unique relationships.

The Video Store Collin mentions here was on 57th Street between 8th and 9th. I know this because I used to see him there.

these videos make me think of the days when my free time was all my own and i could check out all the dvds i liked. they also make me think: why do those featured always pick dvds of the films they known? have they not got dvds of them already?! maybe there'll be a video where someone goes: "oh, i heard of this; never seen it; i'll try it"; and then comes back next week to say "ah, it was great" or "it was no good; i don't think i'll bother with more films directed by x, y or z" (hee, hee, hee)

Although I'll admit I do miss mid-40s curmudgeon Colin, who would arrive early in the morning on OandA in his pajamas to air out his grievances in the midst of some long-term depression. A gem of a person.

I believe Dougie Bell was the one who turned Col on to most of these masterpieces.

I once attended a taping of his Tough Crowd show years ago. Great show, probably wouldn’t be shown today on TV or at least not in the same time slot.

Colin had a great video store with an unusually well versed clerk and so did I. Alan's Alley on 9th Avenue and 22nd Street in NYC, one of the greatest rental collections of all time. Alan had impeccable taste and unlimited knowledge of film across every genre and country. Fact - advertising agencies used his video store as a reference library. I love how Colin puts it in his bag as if he's stealing. That's NY!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty this is the first closet picks where the guest puts more movies back on the shelf than in his bag.
