It took all but an hour during the 2005 Giro d’Italia for the Colle delle Finestre to become a cycling superstar. I remember watching the race and as the road turned to dirt thinking “what on earth is this climb? Man, I’ve got to do this!” It was right there on the spot that my (let’s say, mild) obsession with the Finestre began and, having been back from time to time to refuel the flame, that fascination is only getting stronger on every ride.
To try and describe the Finestre in words is something of an injustice. Its dense forest can feel somewhat overbearing as you wind your way up from the Val di Susa in the north, hairpin after hairpin, no respite from the gradient and seemingly oblivious to the world that’s about to unfold. A near perfect line across the road with 8km to go is the true starting point at which has made the Finestre so famous, where the asphalt turns to dirt, the heart rate quickens and your inner chimp starts to squeak…..it’s on like Donkey Kong!
It’s as if the more you push the more the Finestre delivers. Mountain views open up before you as you pick your line through every turn and climb towards its 2,178m summit. If I can offer some advice on conquering this mountain it would be simple. Be prepared for all conditions, finesse wins over brute force on ‘lo sterrato’, take a second to appreciate the moment in the final kilometre and remember that the wheel tracks that you’re riding in now have been created by some of the greatest riders and moments in cycle sport. Although this climb may not have been raced as frequently as many of Italy’s icons, in some respect that only adds to the attraction. Ride it and you will soon see, words are an injustice. The experience is, and always will be, one of the most challenging and fulfilling you’ll ever be gifted to do.
Start: Susa
Length: 18.7km
Summit: 2,178m
Elevation gain: 1,694m
Average gradient: 9.2%
Max gradient: 14%
Ridden in July

i've done it descending from it on a mountain bike, i think it is amazing people can ride that on a road bike, the gravel part at the top i wouldn't even think to try it with anything less than a cyclocross at best.

Great video as usual. My main question is not really about climbing it but descending this amazing mountian. We have some climbs like that (not as long) here in the Malibu area in the Santa Monica Mountains in Southern California and I find them very difficult to descend with out loosing control. What advice can you give me for that? Thanks.

Great video Mike and team (as always!!!) Can I request a 'this is the camera set up we use' video? To get these shots there must be gimbals, steadycams and tracking jibs galore!! The quality is top-notch! Fantastic editing skills. I LOVE the 'B roll' and slow-mo shots!
@MikeCotty
@MikeCotty 7 лет назад
p tay I think you'd be VERY surprised at how modest our setup is. Steadycam.....more like steadyhand! Seriously, this was all shot with one cameram and a tripod, no gimbals or jibs.

Hey Mike! I'm planning to climb Mount Kea in Hawaii next year. Since it has a long gravel section like this one, I'm looking for "similar" climbs in Europe to train. Can you recommend this climb for training? Besides do you happen to know any other climbs with gravel sections nearby? Greetings from Belgium and never stop making these videos!

Great video. Thanks for making it. Not sure you'll see this, but if you do; which of Mavic's current tubeless tires and rims would you use on this ride, if you were to do it again? I am building-up a road/gravel bike here on a Greek island. Our roads are tarmac/paved and a bit like the last part of your climb to the top; pretty hard dirt paths. I'll be doing most of my riding on the tarmac...I'm thinking of getting the KSYRIUM ELITE UST DISC wheel and putting 28mm YKSION PRO UST tubeless tires or 30mm or 35mm YKSION ELITE ALLROAD tubeless tires. Again, I'll be mostly on tarmac, but would maybe like a option for sometimes riding hard-packed dirt roads...sorry for the long message! I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me. Thanks again for your inspiring videos! ps Come down to Greece and ride some of our awesome roads...
@TheColCollective
@TheColCollective 5 лет назад
Sounds like you have some awesome riding options out there! The Ksyrium Elite Disc UST are an excellent wheel for this type of terrain. I've used the 30mm Yksion Allroad tyres an absolute ton and they are great on the road (fast rolling) but surprisingly hard wearing when hitting the dirt and gravel. Nowadays I generally run a 40mm Mavic Allroad XL tyre on my SuperX but that's because I know I have some pretty hard off road sections. If you're diving on and off road then a 35mm Yksion Elite Allroad tyre will be a great option. Hope that helps! Ride safe and enjoy! Mike
@51jjm
@51jjm 5 лет назад
Mike; Thanks so very. much. I really appreciate you replying and the excellent advice. I'm gonna get those wheels and try the tires you suggest. If you guys ever head down to Greece give me a shout. Thanks again. Safe and happy riding to you as well.

this one goes straight to the "2017 bucket list"! Can it be climbed with 23mm wide tires or are 25mm highly recommended? anyway, good job as usual!
@TheColCollective
@TheColCollective 7 лет назад
Hi Nathan, it can be climbed with 23mm tyres (I did that a few years ago) but to be honest 25's or even wider would be recommended so you can lower the pressure a little for more comfort and traction. I'm riding 25's on the road all the time now, feel great! Keep pedalling my friend! Mike
