Not sure what part of TN your in, but I have several similar pieces. Thanks for sharing. Our property shoreline is on both Clinch River and Norris Lake. I'm now obsessed with rocks, minerals, and fossils, and having trouble identifying the things I find. Can you recomend any books or resources specific to state or area?
there are books out there that can tell you exactly what stones will occur in survey record books if you are really serious and can read the geological records I’ve heard about people doing that. Usually i would recommend looking at some of the stones closest to where you live first and see if there is a small occurrence of anything unique looking to the area. Varieties may be a little bit different depending on if you can get to igneous areas vs the sedimentary areas. In the igneous i found green obsidian but I didn’t have to go to a igneous area of Tennessee to find it you can find it in the basalt layer under the roads it’s mixed in with the fill and looks black unless under the light. In the sedimentary area i found fossils just keep looking and one will jump out at you as nicer or more well formed or a unique species. Agates and jaspers occur in the sedimentary areas where the earth cracks and gets filled in with chalcedony then changes colors with oxides. Join a rock or lapidary club and they will put you up on game.
