Thanks so much for selecting the category Hen on Nest for this week’s 101 video! I remember seeing them in my childhood in the 50’s-60’s. Now fifty years later, I’ve started to collect them! I’ve had a hard time finding information about them when I research them online. I appreciate you taking the time to find the information that you’ve shared

I enjoyed your video. I have somewhere between 30 and 50 animal covered dishes. I have hens, the American eagle with 3 eggs, the Dewey dish, several different ships, fish on a skiff, a lamb, a kitten, a dog, a cow, a horse, a fox, Santa in a sleigh, two kissing birds on a tripod style nest, the dolphin whose tail goes up, and many I’ve forgotten. Most are milk glass, but there’s carnival glass, frosted aqua glass, amber glass, and colors I’ve forgotten. I may have a slag glass or two, I can’t remember. They are all packed away in boxes in my basement storage room. I have pictures of many of them too. I don’t really know what I will do with them. I can’t see selling them for $10 apiece because I paid between $30 and $40 for each one back in the late ‘50’s, the ‘60’s and ‘70’s. Most were bought in antique stores even though they weren’t a hundred years old, they were considered collectible back then. I always hoped they would appreciate, but apparently not. So I guess I’ll hang onto them a little longer...

Thanks for the information! I will research my two "hens on the nest"glass pieces. They were inherited from my Mother. Both are tiny about two inches long. One is milk glass with painted combs. One is clear. The clear glass is not marked, the milk glass is clearly marked Made in Japan. So off to do some Internet research! I was always fascinated by these when I was a child. Where Mom got them is unknown to me, but they are no less precious!

This video left me cold, especially where the story of this particular style of glass is rich in history. The hen on nest glassware really emerged in the mid-1880s with the advent of milk glass. Pressed glassware has been around for a long time, but milk glass production, with its characteristic novelty animals on the top of lidded dishes, became very popular, especially in the late Victorian era. They were unusual and charming in comparison to the uninspired glassware of the past. The hen on nest, or hen in basket, is the most popular form of candy/nut dish by far. In the 1930s and 40s, these Victorian pieces were widely collected as antiques. This is remarkable insofar as many of the collected pieces would have only been 30-50 years old at the time they were being collected as bona fide antiques. Enter big glass companies like Fenton and Westmoreland who secured antique molds from these earlier works. Instead of making new glass inspired by the originals, these companies were disinterested in protecting the collector and, instead, reissued very old pieces, including the hens on a nest candy dishes which remained popular into the 60s. In the ensuing years, the market in antique glassware tanked, and interest in serious collecting of milk glass waned considerably. Because a hens on nest dish is so popular of a pattern, antique stores and flea markets are awash with examples. They sell for modest amounts. There are serious collectors of pressed glass in general and milk glass in particular. Prices for some examples can reach into the 100s of dollars. However, one needs to educate oneself before spending a lot of money in this collecting field.

I received my first hen on nest when i was about 8 years old. Over the years I'd accumulated more, about 7. I'm leaving them to my daughter who wanted to look at them. I had them on a shelf in an antique secretary. When we opened the glass doors, the shelf fell and the hens broke into pieces on the floor! Disaster! So now I'm scouring the internet to replace them. I have several 12" action figures GI Joe, movie characters and super heroes from when I was younger. Have you done any videos over collecting them?

Do you know if Heisey made slag glass HONs? Or did Imperial use their molds with the Heisey makers mark on it to make some?

I’d have to research that alittle bit to be sure

@@66uniqueantiques I've been trying to research that myself but I'm not sure where to go to do it other than continuing to search online...and that isn't easy. I'll keep looking:)

I have a small hen on nest with a factory defect. It's on the rim base of the hen. It's smooth and not a chip. It's a factory defect. It's also milk glass. What would It's value be because of this defect.
@66uniqueantiques
@66uniqueantiques Год назад
Any defect would still effect the value and without seeing it in person makes it tough to gauge value. Try eBay then put into effect the defect and maybe get a value that way

I have a 3" Boyd hen. But i can't figure out the color. It is a milky pinkish white, that is opaque in some parts and clear in other parts. And it is UV reactive.

The uv reactive would be the Cadmium used in the coloring process.
