New graphics, OB! Very slick, I like them. You are forever evolving, a difficult task to sustain. Those four spaghetti westerns remain among the short list of my all-time favorite movies. Such an iconic cultural experience, never to be repeated. Your attention to the details behind the works, including Morricone's music (epic!) is stunning. I've learned a lot about some of those aspects viewing this episode of Outlaw Bookseller. A great subject to cover, one near and dear to my heart. Cheers!

Thanks Rick - I was very pleased with the original music by my collaborator Steve Holmes, he got the tone just right. The 'new graphics' are ones I've used before, albeit sparingly, but never in a thumbnail, but I really like them....

Classic! Manco is slang Italian meaning missing or maimed in the hand (other definitions too) I watched Sonny and Jed yesterday a classic spaghetti western which show the anti-hero, a despicable character, eating spaghetti... By Sergio Corbucci, who did Django which you show (with Tomas Milian, Susan George, Telly Savalas) who made his name as well as Sergio Leone as action scene directors on a 'Peplum' sword and sandal epic. Great stuff. I was led to this movie by a Tarantino interview/review of the film which is also highly informative and enjoyable and finally along comes the great Outlaw Bookseller to complete the trilogy it has to be said. FYI One reason A Fistful of Dollars is based on the Japanese Kurosawa Samurai Yojimbo. Kurosawa sent a note: ''This is a great film, unfortunately it is my film'' The producers handed over 15% of the profits so he made more money from Fistful than all his previous Japanese films combined. Which is nice. Yojimbo was based on on The Glass Key (1947), an adaptation of the 1931 novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammett (1894-1961) So layers and influences: Noir, Samurai and Western. Quite a mx. Fascinating stuff lovely books

Yes, that's the lawsuit I referred to. I've read the Hammet too, decades ago. Tarantino's Corbucci doc is excellent, I'm huge fan of his 'The Great Silence' myself.

Wonderful trip down Memory Lane. Our school library had a few of these paperbacks on its shelves, probably to cash in on those Monday night BBC film slots, in among the Dickens and the Bronte (the 'proper' school reading-list). I remember reading A Fistful of Dollars. It was the next-best thing to watching the film again ... long before VHS!

I’ve loved the soundtrack to these movies for a long time. It really is great music. I’m a few years younger than you, at 58 years old, but I still remember the impact of seeing these Italian westerns, and hearing that amazing music when I was a kid. It really blew my mind in a great way. I was hooked from the beginning. As much as I love the Italian interpretation of Western cinema, I am also a big fan of the original American version. Being a big fan of John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Gary Cooper, as well. And directors like Ford, Hawks, Peckinpah and Eastwood himself. I watched an interesting video elsewhere on RU-vid about how Sergio Leone played the soundtrack to one of his movies while the actors were making it to inspire them. Which seems like a great idea when you think about it. I had not been aware of that these great old movies were also books. So now you’ve got me curious about the books. And while I was looking for the books on Amazon, I also came across “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot“ by the same author. And that’s another great old Clint Eastwood Action flick.
@outlawbookselleroriginal
@outlawbookselleroriginal 25 дней назад
I was a massive Clint fan, so like you, 'Thunderbolt' was another of many Eastwood vehicles I've watched many times. Dario Argento- another favourite Italian director of mine- also played the soundtrack music of his film 'Suspiria' on set and of course he co-wrote 'Once Upon A Time In The West'. I love Peckinpah and I've been watching classic 1950s westerns of later with a renewed appreciation of Ford.

Brilliant video that spoke to me a lot. The Dollar 'trilogy' was my big entry point into cinema as a child - the music, images and high drama burned their way into my brain in an almost overpowering way. I've seen the films loads of times since then and never once thought of the chronology - I always assumed they were just almost totally separate films because of Lee Van Cleef having two roles in them but I find it very amusing that there is a theory that the dollar stoies are set in an alternative history - Ward Moore springs to mind! Looking forward to your vids on the dollar novels - thanks as always.

Yes, they were seminal for me too and are still firm faves. As I mentioned, I know Sir Christopher Frayling to speak with- we've talked a number of times, once at length, but I've not seen him for some years, he always used to be around Bath but we usually ended up talking about vampire fiction. Lovely man. If I ever bump into him again, I'll be bringing Leone up and he has a new book on the great man coming out this autumn.

@@outlawbookselleroriginal Christopher Frayling - what a legend. He is one of the most interesting speakers on cinema I've ever heard - his dvd commentaries are the absolute best of the best. I still haven't read his 'something to do with death' book but it's one I must track down. Delighted he has a book coming out, I'd not heard of him in a long time - he's the real deal and then some.

@@michaeldaly1495 Yes, brilliant commentaries. I've sold him books a few times over the years and I suggested he update his vampire book some years back and soon after that, he went ahead and did just that. We had a great conversation in 2018 at a literary festical at an event celebrating the 200th anniversary of 'Frankenstein'- he spent more time talking to me than he did giving a talk, lovely man.

Now having watched the video.... Thank you so much, Steve. Fascinating stuff. I was too young to see the films in the cinema when they came out, but frustratingly was old enough to stay up late enough to see clips in the late night cinema review TV show (presented by Michael Scott?). The first film I saw was FaFDM, in the early 70s in a university refectory on a not great screen and somewhat distorted sound; I was blown away, by the film and the music. When I first heard the film soundtracks on LP & CD, they always sounded a bit too clean, after the full-on experience of hearing the music in the cinema. As I type this, I'm listening to 'A Fistful of Sounds', a 2-CD compilation of the soundtracks of AFoD, FAFDM, and OUaTitW which sadly omits TGTBTU, probably because it dates from the time before it was routine to put >74 mins on a CD. For people who love the Morricone music, & are willing to step outside of the dollar western canon, I would recommend watching a video here on YT from The Spaghetti Western Orchestra, 5 brilliant Australian musicians who appeared at the Albert Hall in the 2011 BBC Proms, playing Morricone music from the Leone films - 73 minutes of joy and amazement! There's a 2008 Korean film called 'The Good, the Bad, and the Weird', set in the 1930s or 40s Manchurian desert, which has been well-received in the West. Jonathan Ross: "Highly enjoyable...full of fun and invention"; The Times: "It's a blast - literally". MTV: "Everything that the latest Indiana Jones flick should have been". I have a DVD but haven't watched it yet.

I love Westerns and prefer the Spaghetti variety as well (just watched Django last week). I also go through phases where I read a lot of Western novels but it is easy to get burned out on them since it's hard to find a truly original plot once you read a few. I own the novels for the three Dollars films but have not yet read them. Eventually I will do so and track down the other books too.

Thanks for an enjoyable amble down memory lane. Read all of them as a teenager. Apart from an incongruous note about the MWNN having some idea of investing all his bounty money in a ranch someplace, I thought they were great. And those Chris Achilleos covers are simply sublime. Speaking of names, the books invent a whole roster of new sobriquets for the MWNN. The one I remember with particular relish is Mr Sudden Death. Millard was an active figure in the Western tie-in genre. He also did the novelisation of The Hunting Party, an undeservedly unremembered Oliver Reed western, would anyone believe.
@outlawbookselleroriginal
@outlawbookselleroriginal 24 дня назад
That 'Ranch Retirement Plan' thing stuck with me too, so much so that I always saw it as his primary motivation. Achilleos? Yes, great artist.
@richardtoogood9817

There is a story, probably apocryphal (and Eastwood himself disputes it), that Leone had it in mind to cast Eastwood, Van Cleef and Wallach in the roles of the three bounty hunters that Bronson mows down at the opening of Once Upon A Time in the West. If there had to be an ending to the MWNN's odyssey this is one that strikes me as more apposite than any rocking chair on the range. Your next mission Steve, should you choose to accept it, collating a set of western movie tie-ins with Raquel Welch covers.

The running order is hotly contested, but the dates in the visual details of the films suggest 'The Good...' first, then 'For A Few...' then 'Fistful' but of course the newspaper archive that Colonel Mortimer is shown could be an old newspaper, thus postdating 'Fistful'. It's all fascinating stuff.
