In this video we are collecting the seed from Primula bulleyana, one of the candelabra primulas which has fiery yellow/orange flowers in spring. This is one of our favourites along with Primula beesiana and Primula japonica 'Miller's Crimson'.
We also explain why were are sowing the brown seed now, and the other different times the seed can be sown.

Now I know why my primula seeds have never germinated. I've not left them for the cold spell and after a few weeks I've always used the compost as a mulch thinking that the seeds had failed. Primulas come in such gorgeous colours. Love purple, red and yellow flowers together. Thanks for passing on your knowledge. I've always found that people who like gardening are very generous and don't mind sharing. Have a great weekend.

You are welcome Wendy. Thank you for watching and thank you for all your lovely comments. They are appreciated 🙂😎. We are glad that we were able to enlighten you as to why each time you had sown primula seeds, they had not worked. They need that cold snap first before they will even think about germinating. Primulas are so beautiful. I miss all the ones we left in Sheffield, but now we have an opportunity to grow more 😀🙂.

Hi there If I harvest the green seed do I plant them immediately and do I also need to leave them for a cold period?

Yes, sow the green seed straight away. It doesn't need a period of cold to germinate. It's the brown seed that needs a period of cold.

We saw the amazing display of primula varieties at the Harlow Carr garden at Harrowgate. We come from Canada, so the taller varieties are not seen. Bought last seed package in all the RHS gardens we visited. Now growing, about 3 inches. Hope to be first in my town with them! Thanks for informative video.

It's brilliant that you have started your first plants and will be the first in your area to grow these taller candelarbra primulas. They are such elegant plants. Now you have them, you'll be able to grow many more through division and seeds when they are large enough. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching 👍

I've sown some of the green seeds like you've said. Waiting for them to germinate now. Are there any other plants that I can sow their seeds at the green stage? thank you so much for your videos. I love watching them and always look forward to your latest.

You're very welcome, glad it has helped. That's fantastic you have sown some. I'm not aware of any other seeds that can be sown in the green other than primulas. Thanks for watching our videos, it's great to hear how much you enjoy them 😀

I have a half seed tray that is now crowded with tiny P. bulleyana and P. beesiana seedlings which were sown last autumn. Some of them look big enough to transplant into individual pots, but the majority are still a bit on the small side. When do you find is the best time to prick them out, and from there, plant them into the garden ?

That's great you have so many new seedlings. We would say when they have their true leaves is the ideal time to prick out. I'd carefully transplant the ones that are ready, leaving the smaller ones a bit more room to grow on before they can be pricked out. Prick them out into small module trays and then pot on again when they fill these into small pots. When they have filled these pots they should be large enough to plant out. Just remember to make sure they don't dry out as they like the moisture. Hope this helps 👍

Keep the pots until next year as they should germinate in the spring if they haven't done yet. Sometimes getting the timing right on the green seeds can be hit and miss.
