In this short video on collecting rocks and minerals, I show a place to gather fluorite in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Rockhounds and mineral collectors will be surprised to see the quality of specimens that can be found with just a little bit of looking. If you are looking for things to do in Niagara Falls, this certainly ranks up there for me.

I live in this area. I was the one who was at work * giggles . They have since cleared that field in front of the hill. I have found lots of crystals there. The orange crystal is sparlite and there is lots of it . I have several photos of my finds on Facebook. Happy to see you found my fav spot to go here at home. Blessings

Thanks for sharing. Ben E. Clement Mineral Museum houses an outstanding collection of minerals, gemstones, carvings, period journals, photographs, mining tools and other items. The collection has been visited by various authorities on minerals and is believed to be one of the finest in existence. The Ben E. Clement Mineral Museum, Inc. was formed in June 1990 to make the attraction something that would generate outside interest in the mineral and mining heritage of West Kentucky.

I've often wondered if any of the workers, while constructing these immense projects years ago, stumbled upon any caves or caverns... Engineers and construction workers are really the only ones who are moving vast amounts of overburden with the machinery they use. Great finds, they are quite brilliant and colourful.

I've wondered that myself. some years ago while living in Gibraltar I was fortunate enough to be called to check out a natural cavern that had been exposed while they were doing some underground tunnel work. I'm sure its not all that uncommon.

The purple on those specimens is stunning. All the fluorite I've found has always been a milky light purple. Will have to make a special trip out there one day and see what I can find. Thanks for the video tip!

I explored a fluorite mine in Death Valley National Park a few years ago. It was called the Pink Elephant Mine. It is located in Warm Springs Canyon. The mine wasn't very successful, though, due to its remote location. An interesting thing about the mine is that it was dug through some of the oldest rocks in Death Valley, according to the geologists who studied the tunnels.

Is this site still viable for collecting ? I see a FOR SALE sign on the property or what I believe is the area. I even see a Starbucks drive thru next to the site. How nice ! Rocks and Starbucks !

I was just wondering,out of curiosity, if you know what kind of crystals or minerals which can be found in Ireland? Also I love your channel!
@Caver461
@Caver461 9 лет назад
Thanks for the positivity. I am not so sure about Ireland. by my memory there are both igneous and sedimentary rocks there so I would expect there is quite a variety.

Any plans on making a foray into the Far North? Lol... There are so many old gold and esp. silver mines around here, with your knowledge of assessing a site, and eliminating unlikely leads, I bet you could find some stuff around here that would blow my collection away! ... Well, maybe not my 3kg amethyst crystal... But then again, MAYBE! :) Love your videos man!

hello I found something I haven't seen you or anyone find at the Montrose occurrence its like a greenish blue gem rock definatly eroded from water and it has a little piece where you can see a clear green streak in it like a gem would look like but the outside is like rough from water and tumbling! If you have an email I can contact I'd like to show you!!!

I am also curious as to if you found any Selenite there?
@Caver461
@Caver461 9 лет назад
Yes, there was a fair bit of selenite. And as it turns out today, these minerals all exist in the dumps from the Welland Canal as well - just not as plentiful as those from the power Canal.

Malissa Lynn hi Malissa, where Mcleod and Montrose intersect just go north a short distance to the skateboard park. Right across the way there is a big hill. wherever the rocks are exposed start chipping.

Hi there,By coincidence I too am from Guelph (which i am believed to think you are because of your Guelph videos) I actually stumbled upon your videos while searching for geode videos for southern Ontario, anyways... That one crystal you found, I am very curious as to what that might be. I believe it may be Spessartine?. If that is what i think it is....AWESOME FIND!! But i am curious did you ID that gem stone?
@Caver461
@Caver461 9 лет назад
Yes I am from Guelph, I am guessing the crystal that you mean, that would be sphalerite (zinc/sulfur). Apparently these crystals are found far larger in the flamborough quarry and at Dolime (diagonal from the Manor) Garnet is found in igneous rock, this rock is sedimentary. One of the first clues as to Garnet is its habit (from the isometric crystal system - often as a rhombic dodecahedron). I have found a fair bit of garnet up around Bancroft. I have a book coming out on rocks and minerals in March 2015, basically discussing the finding of minerals in the north - this includes garnet. I have heard of geodes up north of Lake Superior
