Have absolutely no.idea how I can be a nurses aid till I am 67. There is back breaking labor involved with this job. I am 55 lifting people who weight more than 200 pounds. I come home exhausted there's no way I can do double shifts anymore. Retiring in your seventies is fine if you have a desk job but if your job involves labor, standing all day and moving things you're wore out by your 50's. I can't do the work like a 30-year-old it's physically impossible. Covid pandemic my age group was told to stay home high risk but yet there I was taken care of covid infected residents. People with any type of labor employment should be able to retire at 55. If I work till I am 70...will be taking care of people younger than me. I take care of people that are as young as 64 with advanced dementia need everything done for them. This whole country is ridiculous people who made the retirement age 67 into existence have no idea what it's like to really do hard days work.

I'm a self employed carpenter and coming up on 64 years of age. I'm pretty beat up from a lifetime of hard physical work in the trades. I don't know if I can hold out even to 67 . I think my friend Andy put it best " Take it when you need it " Maybe September 2025 when I turn 65 , one month at a time..... we'll see 🤔

This video was sponsored by the social security admin. They want you to take it at 70, because a quarter of us will be dead. Take it at 62, unless you know you will live to 110 years old. My break even is 80.4 years. If you don’t need it, reinvest it, and get 7 to 10 percent in the stock market. No charge. You’re welcome.

You forgot to tell people that their SS would be clawed back if they exceed income limits prior to FRA. You also forgot to tell people that their surviving spouse would get the higher of the couple’s SS payments You also forgot to tell people that SS is the mother of all annuities. Lifetime income, tax advantaged and inflation adjusted with survivor benefits People should make educated choices about when to file for SS.

I want to be able to pay all my bills leading up to retirement as well as after I retire. If I take my retirement at 62, I not only lose my entire normal monthly income, but I also lose 30% of my FRA social security benefits. Meaning I stop receiving $5300/ month from my employer and instead only get $1500/ month from SS plus about $2000/ month from my 401k. It is hard to pay the bills every month on that. If I wait until I am 67, then I get $2100/ monthth front SS and I get another $2900/ month from my 401k. I can pay the bills with that amount.

I just started SS at 62 at 1,770. IF I started at 66 1/2 years old the break even point is 78!! As for me I`ll take my near 1,800 a month to start and maybe become a expat. Or just move to a cheaper part of the USA. Life happens, so instead of fighting it I`m flowing from now on. No more work! I want to finally live FREE! While I can.
@fredost1504
@fredost1504 5 лет назад
SS just updated personal SS reports to show total personal/employer contributions(never available before). I bet if you run the report, look at total contributions and divide by $1770, your payback will be about 13 years. So by age 75 you will have recaptured ALL contributions and from that point forward its all gravy. Actually, since you didnt make employer contributions, payback is only 6.5 years or age 68.5. Knowing that why WOULDNT anybody file early. Beside SS is going to be redone very soon. See SS 2100 act legislation.

My husband took his ss at full retirement age of 66. He didn’t wait until 70, which was a good thing because he died suddenly at age 71. His parents both lived until they were in their 90’s. At the end the person says “It pays to wait” - with nothing backing-up this claim. The “reality” is that taking Social Security at age 70 vs. FRA means that you have to wait about 11 years before you have more money by waiting! And if you don’t need the money now- take it and invest it or get a nice 4.5% no-risk CD! You’ll have more money by taking it now and enjoying it now! (A similar argument could be made for taking at age 62 - but if you are working then you may have important tax considerations so I basically recommend FRA for starting Social Security). Of course each case is different and so no one blanket recommendation works- but don’t forget that breakeven and most people won’t live much past 80! 1 June 2023 - SCS.

You have to live to at least 84 for waiting to age 70 to work, and the odds are against you. If you collect $700 at 62, $1000 at 67, and $1240 at 70, you basically give up the money during the years you are waiting. If you waited till 67, you give up $700 x 12 x 5, or $42000, to get $300 more a month, and that takes 140 months to recoup what you give up, that's 11.66 years. So, if you live to 78.66, you are ahead from then on. If you died at 78, you didn't even break even. U.S. life expectancy is less than 78.

Not near enough information, about each individual, to form an opinion if anyone else might be in a similar situation. For example, i bet Nancy is from money , has a pension, nice 401k or is a widow of someone who was heavily insured, possibly has survivor benefits, or all of the above. Poor job, AARP !

The tricky part with this question is the unknown. You don't know how long you will live to make the best decision. Take it at 66 or whatever full is 62 if you can afford it. If you want to gamble take it at 70

The break-even point is between 83 and 84 years old. This is the point where delaying to age 70 actually pays off. That's 13-14 years after 70. Some things to think about. 1. Although Social Security payments are COLA adjusted, the rate is never the true rate of inflation as the government always underestimates it to put a positive spin on things. If you take it early, the funds you do get early are going to be worth more. 2. No one knows when they are going to die. Even if longevity runs in your family, you could be in a car accident and die, or contract a disease and die. Over 1 million people in the US died from COVID. 3. By taking SS early, you would be spending the money while you are younger and healthier. What's the advantage of waiting and not being able to walk a mile when you're over 84? There are other considerations though. If your spouse would benefit by waiting, you need to work for health insurance, or you want to keep working, then it may be beneficial to wait.

the reason you get more if you wait is because it is now a shorter period of time they expect you to live. It is the same amount of money but if you take it at 62 it is stretched over a longer period of time...therefore it will be a smaller payout. Now if you have a retirement pension then social security will not give you the full amount due unless you have paid into social security at least for 30 years.

Make as much as you can for those 35 years that SS uses to determine your SS payment. If you take at 62...you will get 70% of what you are entitled...that "puny check" you mentioned. If you wait until 67 you will get 100% of what you are entitled. Your choice. IMO...to avoid the "puny check" wait until 67 to claim.

What age to take SS? There is no 1 correct answer. Everyone's situation is different. People who have a nice pension can retire at 62, take their SS and be set for life. People who only have SS can not afford to take a reduced amount at 62 and stop working. The Government will allow a person who collects SS at ages 62-66 to make 18,000 for the year before they hammer you with taxes. Working after age 67, you can make an unlimited amount without tax penalties. Some people retire because they are tired of being asked "When are you going to retire?" Not a good reason. I will work until 64, take my pension (which is good), work part time ages 65 and 66 (not more than 18,000). Take my SS at 67. Waiting until 70 is tempting due to the extra money you get. Wait until age 67 you will be 78 when you break even. Wait until 70, you will be 87 when you break even.
