Great interview. I have tons of.raw cards that were bought well before TPG ever existed. People who shy away from raw vintage cards are cutting their own throats.
great interview, Yes as a baby boomer, your right love to watch Mangini. Maybe you are also talking about Oddball Cards too. But these guys are young compared to to me.
This was fantastic. Much wisdom and common sense all the way through! These types of mindsets are exactly what the newer people to the hobby need to hear. I'd elaborate but you guys essentially covered it all. Well said fellas!
Apparently that is the case 😂 I’ve been replaced, haven’t been on 4C inna while. That Chris from…wherever he’s from is also rumored to be in the running
I share some of Mangini's same concerns when it comes to graded cards that could be trimmed or altered. I like raw cards too, though it can be difficult to know if they haven't been altered either. I think the hobby will be, in a better place when it comes to accountability and transparency once, there is AI technology, (maybe TAG will grade vintage in the future) that can crack down no pun intended on the bad actors.
Yeah ungraded can be scary, with high end cards. John’s point about knowing where it came from, is a great point. I’m not a fan of AI coming in for vintage but do realize it will probably happen nomatter what.
@@ClementeCollector It's going to be difficult to embrace AI I think in a lot of different aspects of life, and where some jobs are concerned too. Scary times. Though I try to be optimistic that something good can come from it. We shall see.
If the man-genie in a bottle gave me 3 wishes they would be 1) 1914 Cracker Jack Joe Jackson, 2) 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth and 3) 1988 Donruss Greg Jeffries, of course.
Fun fact. Gregg Jeffries’ father was our baseball coach back in junior high school. I remember my friends and I trying to pack search 1988 Score to find his rookie prospect card. You could see through those plastic wrappers. Gregg wasn’t the next Mantle as he was hyped to be, but did have a good, solid career.
Centering is less of a concern for me, because that is how the card was issued. Corner damage is due to handling and damage after the card was purchased. Other than extreme cases, I would take a bad cut over damaged corners.
I feel similar, older cards came off centered a lot of times. I do understand John’s point- a worn vintage card sometimes has a great eye appeal to it. But I’d prefer the pack fresh OC between the two options.
Something said (at about the 48 minute mark) made a light bulb come on for me. I don't like baseball these days. It bores me. However, as a kid I loved it. I knew a lot about the history. I read and books (as John mentioned) about the history that I could get my hands on. But I grew up without cable. I couldn't watch a game every night like some could, so I read and learned. Kids today have basically any game available to them. Perhaps they are watching the modern game and don't care about the past because they have options that us in our 40s+ didn't have.
Theo if what you said was true about 70/20 you should be buying up every single PSA 8 and 9 OC designations that go to auction they sell for dirt cheap and are pack fresh everytime. I probably had 100 of them at one point of time. Also rounded corners come on dude do you see me buying topps cards with rounded corners ?? 🤣🤣 other than that great episode ha ha ha ha .
You’re right, when I said, “ I know what Dylan would pick” was unfair. Your cards are the best of both worlds. Thanks for keeping me in check, haha! Thanks for watching too!
