After nearly 60 years, the collector who spent a lifetime accumulating 3-million baseball cards -- weighing five tons -- says it's time to say goodbye to his prized possessions.
Soon, each and every card will be up for auction, but Jeff Matthews says it was a hard decision to make.

Greed and over-producing cards nearly destroyed the hobby in the late 80s thru the early 90s. Its been an uphill climb restoring faith in people, especially kids. But, due to companies now "under-producing" cards its made a comeback. Pricey packs with all kinds of premium chase cards saved them.

Yup the exact period of time I collected. For some strange reason, I have bought a few packs of Topps this year. I haven't purchased baseball cards since 97ish

You're high. What's happening now is exactly what happened in the 1980's & '90's. People that know nothing about the sport & history of the hobby are driving prices through the roof by snatching up everything they can lay their hands on. I'm currently liquidating my collection of about 500,000 cards because the prices are just too good to pass up. People are paying stupid high prices for junk, all in their quest to "strike it rich!". There's no pot of gold at the end of the current collecting hobby, just a bunch of cards that no one will want in another 5 to 10 years. Greed is killing the hobby again and this time it may be the death of card collecting. After all, they're just pieces of cardboard with pictures on them.

@@ghill628 dude so many boxes of 36 packs that used to go for 5 bucks a box are now like 50 and sooo many boxes of basketball cards that used to be 20-25 bucks a box are now 200-300 a box its such BS ... I used to like buying boxes of packs just to open for fun and keep the cards but now I cant because the prices are just so insane it doesnt even make sense. why people are paying 200-300 for a box of cards makes no sense. they think theyre gonna get a bunch of Jordans and get PSA 10's and thats not the case. theyre paying 200-300 for a box and in the end wont even make 100 back. I dont get why people are being this dum paying these prices????

There are young collectors which might surprise Jeff.
@mobus1603
@mobus1603 6 лет назад
Not many. It really is a dying hobby. You don't own *_THREE MILLION_* baseball cards without knowing a whole lot about the market. Jeff isn't dumb. He sees the values plummeting and wants to get rid of them while he still can get anything for them. Problem is that so many other older collectors are doing the same thing.
@888strummer
@888strummer 6 лет назад
Values are not plummeting. Most are holding steady. The ones that plummeted 20 years ago never recovered, but the pre-1975 cards are not changing much in value. They aren't rising much but also aren't dropping. And there are young collectors. Maybe not as many as 40 years ago but there are more young collectors than people would realize. Young being under 30. Go to Ebay and some of the top card sellers get 10,000 feedbacks per month. Hardly a dying collectible
@Cheri592
@Cheri592 6 лет назад
Yes, pre-1980 cards baseball cards still hold their value, but that's not getting young people into collecting. If there are any cards that kids actually still collect, it's Pokémon; otherwise, kids are way more into smartphones and playing video games than collecting baseball cards. The market has changed a lot since 1995.
@888strummer
@888strummer 6 лет назад
People said the same thing 20 years ago in the 1990's when cards made in the 1980's began plummeting. People said sell everything because no young kids want cards anymore. Yet 25 years later; the top ebay sellers get as much as 10,000 feedbacks a month, so many people are still buying. What's most interesting is that there are valuable cards that sell for $1,000's that were made in the past 10 years. THis confuses me as I wonder who is driving newer cards of the last 10 years to be worth a lot. I tend to think you're right that there are less and less young people collecting, but I'm still amazed how many card sales are on ebay; literally millions of cards are sold each month on ebay; so there has to be many young buyers. And there are a lot of youtube card videos of young men who look to be in their 20's and 30's. So it can't be just old men like me?
@mobus1603
@mobus1603 6 лет назад
I didn't say there's zero market for baseball cards, but if you think it will ever be as hot as it was 25 years ago, you're living in a fantasy land, sorry. Just view it purely as a hobby now, not an investment; otherwise, you'll wind up spending way more time, money and effort than it will ever be worth.

Hmm.. And I thought I had a lot of baseball cards... Lol. Any who, I think these days it's waaay better now to start selling baseball cards (or any other kinds of cards for that matter) than ever before. A lot of these cards have really skyrocketed. There were some cards that I had originally purchased off of eBay for 10's of dollars just a year or two ago that have since reached triple figures. And similarly, I had also bought cards for between $100 - $200 that are now worth several hundreds, if not a thousand-plus. True story, no exaggeration. Those in the know will also confirm these types of stories.
