I have no respect for her after how she is treating the man that initially brought the movie to life.

It’s a book and movie that romanticizes and glorifies an abusive relationship. It’s a real pity that this book got made into a film, we really don’t need young women and girls thinking that these kind of relationships and dynamics should be what we aim for in any way. I wish she would have made the angle more like she’s talking about in this interview, because that would’ve been more impactful.

The book and movie don't romanticize and glorify abusive relationships at all. I never liked Ryle (he's a bad boy and not in a good way) and always wanted Lily to choose Atlas (the love of her life).

The book gives a good portrayal of what it can feel like for people who have experienced DV or really any type of abuse. It shows that the main character, Lily, has a lot of issues she needs to work through from growing up in an abusive household. Then during a vulnerable time in her life, when she is faced with the reality of childhood again, she falls into a relationship that feels good and healing but is still similar to what she saw growing up. It shows the difficulty and mix of emotions she faces when the relationship turns abusive. She struggles with trying to change what happened in the past with her current situation, which often happens to people who deal with generational trauma. It shows how she struggles with boundaries and knowing that just because something isn’t as bad as what you grew up with doesn’t mean it’s good. This feels like a very relatable and accurate portrayal of how people end up in abusive situations and how difficult it is to leave especially when there are old wounds that have not healed. I think it’s easy to see it as romanticizing DV if you don’t have a true understanding of what it feels like to be in those relationships. I think everyone should also understand that the author wrote this book based on her own thoughts, beliefs, and experiences with DV which was healing for her and should be respected for that reason alone.

How about it speaks an uncomfortable truth. And empowers a woman it's never to late to get out if you are still alive.

I'm glad that all writer's voice's are heard but I can't help but feel a little sadness for Robinne Lee's book to film The Idea Of You where she didn't get to have any creative input at all which I don't feel is very fair at all. Happy for Colleen just the same.

I believe that if Lily had stayed with Ryle, he would've eventually killed her. I couldn't be more proud of her for leaving. ❤

Statistically, the most dangerous time for a victim/survivor (ie risk of being seriously harmed or killed) of DV is actually when they plan to leave, or shortly after leaving

So many missing parts! You could’ve at least added the magnet, the diaries, the fever scene. Ugh. Such a waste.

I was disappointed when the scene where Atlas' friends/coworkers met Lily at his house was cut from the movie. It was such a beautiful scene when Lily asked Atlas why he never came back for her and he tells her that he did but she had a college boyfriend at the time. And Lily realizes that she married the wrong guy. 😢

I agree. Those were all such beautiful scenes. And the "just keep swimming" thing. Wish they'd made a TV show instead so it could be longer.

I don’t know why the explanation for this movie is a love triangle. it’s not a love triangle. Atlas is Lily’s first love . Lily is Atlas’s first love. Lily is Rhyl’s first love. The one thing that I read in the book and I’m not sure they did the movie I don’t remember is when Rhyl explains he’s in therapy to deal with his anger and his blackouts. I’m thinking well why doesn’t Lily go to therapy with you so maybe you can get to the crux of the situation because you’re now in a relationship. That is the one thing that didn’t make sense to me. I cried so hard in this book I think I was exactly like just at the end of it when he was reading it he said he cried so much. And I think in the movie Rhyl has no relationship with his child at all. They changed that from the book. I always thought it was interesting that Colleen asked Justin about being Rhyl.

“A movie about a character navigating a love triangle (amidst her struggle with domestic violence)” perfectly encapsulates everything wrong with this movie. The author made the whole book some sort of romance novel when the main focus should have been on the domestic abuse. It’s one thing to incorporate multiple types of elements and maybe romance being one of them. But this movie and book in particular took it too far

I disagree. This is a story about a strong woman who overcame a toxic relationship to find her happily ever after. I love that it doesn't just focus on the ugliness and gives us hope.

@@jennafox8556 What we're (rightfully) taught when getting support for DV, is to learn to build back our self-esteem by becoming *truly independent* and prioritizing our needs, working on loving/caring for ourselves first, and building our support network, especially with female friends. It's really important, while undergoing therapy and healing, to do the work on building yourself back. There is nothing wrong with wanting to meet a new (healthy) partner down the line, but romantic relationships are not the be-all and end-all of a woman's life. Whether you call it a love triangle or not, it is a shame that there is an "other guy".
