The days of Utah having a P5 recruiting advantage are over. Now that the two teams are on even ground, you’re going to see a new era of BYU dominating the Utes and it starts next week.
@@jkemp6791 agreed 100% - it’ll be interesting with csu, usu, and Boise in the “pac-12” as well. I mean it should be the premier G5 conference and a killer in bball with zags and st. Marys … that could have a major leveling the field effect on Utah! Thoughts! @jkemp6791
Anything is possible. But I agree. We've seen BYU teams that were way better than what Utah's putting out there this year get whooped by Utah. Per Mr. Bernard's comments, I don't think they've got the will to win.
As an Iowa State fan, I don't know much about the Holy War, but I know the CyHawk game and Farmageddon have produced bizarre results for many years. I wouldn't bet on Utah, but BYU should be very nervous that Utah could possibly play the best game of their season despite their recent performances.
Yea… it might happen just due to the intensity of the rivalry but it does seem like byu has it this year. I’m a CU fan so kinda pulling for Utah (uggghhh) but kinda want to see byu just run the table all the way to the playoff lol
@ haha I used to disdain BYU so much back in the mountain west (csu, Air Force and wyo “fan” as well) but am so happy to see BYU dominate here. Thanks for the CU love… if they wouldn’t have blown the KSU at the end, it’d be a race to a cougs v buffs title game! I think that loss is going to come back to bite the buffs though @jkemp6791
Utah was playing for pride against TCU and Houston and that didn’t go so well. Utah’s best chance is that they have absolutely no pressure because no one expects anything for the rest of the season except for the Utes to rack up losses.
BYU defense is going to absolutely rattle Utah’s struggling offense And BYU’s offense has really come around and is able to drive and score. I think Utah will make big plays during this game and it’ll be a little crazy as rivalry game but I’m looking forward to 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter and the stands start to clear in the Utah stadium because BYU is up by 20.
Few thoughts -Jay Hill had been a nightmare for young qbs. Masking coverages, blitzes etc. two weeks of prep gives BYU’s defense more of an advantage then Utahs offense regardless of Wilson, Rose or the now redshirt eligible Hourd… or whatever his name is. -Locked on OK state was convinced that they wouldn’t even be able to keep it close in Provo. That game proves BYU is capable of playing down to the competition. It’s not a glaring issue as the UCF, AZ games show BYU typically maintains their level of play. Given the game is in rice Eccles there is a founded narrative that anything can happen. -JT Utah won games early in the season but didn’t really “handle business”. Given the runs USU, OSU and BU had on them. -Utah hasn’t beat BYU in 5 years. Only 1 loss in that time frame, but I would argue that skipping out on the rivalry has hurt their program. Playing those games and having the opportunity year in and out to erase and remind your rival of dominance is valuable in the locker room and in the recruiting trail. Kyle Whittingham has severally under-appreciated the recruiting advantage Utah has had over BYU as a power 5 program. Has that 10 year lead really evaporated in 2 seasons? -Morgan Scalley will be fired in year 2 under the helm.
The “Holy War” is one of the most hateful rivalry games. Utah fans have a visceral HATE for BYU. In rivalry games ANYTHING can happen because it’s so emotional. Utah wants to spoil BYU’s season.
The UCF rushing defense was top 20 before they played BYU. Now they are 50th. Utah rushing D is ranked 55th. It’ll be 100tb after they play BYU. And BYU won’t have an issue passing.
As a Ute fan and Aggie grad, hats off to the Y. They're in the driver's seat with the foot to the floor on the pedal. I don't think you should be terrified. I love what the Y has done this year and it represents the state well. Next year, I'm hoping for two schools representing the state well.
Can Utah’s offense put up 18 points against a defense holding their opponents under 20? Unlikely. If they can only run the ball they can’t play catchup.
It’s a tale of two different cultures now. BYU’s guys are bought in. And playing well together. A few may jump into the NIL but Sitake has them believing. There are at least four guys on that Utah defense that are NFL caliber and you wouldn’t know it now. Because they are not able to count on their other guys. Which will lead them toward the exits. These young guys don’t have any motivation to beat BYU like the teams of old did. They’ll be up for it and play hard and BYU will start slow off the bye. And good things will happen for a while but BYU will outlast them in all facets. Jake Retzlaff doesn’t have any reason to really fear these guys. Other than the speed and efficiency of the U’s defensive line, he should be able to stay as poised as he has been. This poise grows every week.
Utah's path to destruction was in believing that Cam Rising alone could be their messiah. The problems that needed attention were ignored while all eyes were on Cam. If the rest of the team had owned their own performance, they wouldn't have crumbled like they did.
Utah will show up against BYU just like Kansas showed up against K-State-but this time, it’ll be at the Ute’s home. BYU would need to stay focus and bring their A game. Go Cougs!
In Utah the BYU Utah game is like the Superbowl. Utah has won a lot of them lately. I remember when BYU dominated the rivalry. When Utah joined the pac10 have Utah the recruiting advantage. I think that's changing already.
Whittingham's peers are coaches like Snyder, Edwards, and Bowden. Utah is what it is because of him. People, including most Utah fans, do not grasp how much above its baseline he has had the team operating. This season's struggles may be normal after he is gone.
Turnover margin will once again be the major key to this game. Will not surprise me at all if the Utes win. This game is their season now. Most fans would rather win this game than go to a lowly bowl game.
Ute D will be the best BYU faces. But the same can be said in reverse. Add BYU has a far better offense and Special Teams so it seems BYU should be a favorite in a low score game. BYU offense is however really hitting on all cylinders now and UTEs have not faced a complete Defense yet.Utes will win if it gets +2-4 In the TO battle. But if TO's are even or favor BYU, the Cougars will win. The current BYU O is far better than -5/6 games ago. Honestly, without TOs, Utah will not score on long drives.
Not sure about BYUs defence. Eg letting Oklahoma State score 35. Offence is definitely good, but so is Utah's defemce. I see BYU scoring say 17, Utes offence is the more variable factor, still have Bernard, Kuithe, Parks. Could score nil, could score 28.
@@mark123655 - aOk State was the outlier and it was because Hill prepared for the "analytic trends" without realizing Gundy did the same thing on their part. 1. UCF was averaging 299 ypg passing but only 91 ypg rushing. As such... 2. Hill prepared for the pSs game and ran a 4-2-5 most of the afternoon. Gundy figured Hill would do exactly that and so he filed up the run against BYU's light box. Essentially, in one game Hill was out-prepared by Gundy. But The game against UCF was an example of BYU dominating a rush first team. Forget the last two late TDs. Hill was playing bench warmers all over in the 4th quarter. Utah can run but not with great authority this year. The Utah pass game is at least right now not a real threat. BYU can load the Box, seal the edges, pressure the QB hard, play a lot of bump/press and single free safety. Honestly a shutout would not completely surprise me assuming the UTEs do not score on ST or Defense. BYU should be able to play Utah better than even Houston and TCU did. The question is how will BYU's offense match up against Utah's Defense. Ratzleff needs to play clean ball, no TO's. Do that and BYU might win by 10/more points.
I hope the Cougars are ready. It's going to be a really hard game. If BYU can make it through without a turnover they will win. If you don't win another game this year, win this one!
BYU fan here. Of course Utah can beat BYU. If we don't bring everything we have or fail to prepare at any level, Utah can beat us. Rivalry games are pure havoc and are unpredictable. Playing at Rice Ecles is always a challenge.
Nothing matters when it comes to the Holy War. One teams great, ones terrible…doesn’t matter. Both are great…doesn’t matter. Both are terrible…doesn’t matter. In the rivalry game anything can happen.
I’ve been BYU fan for 72 years. I just go back to the very last time they played and who won that sure Utah beat BYU 10 years but BYU beat them 18 of the following 20 years and again two years ago it’ll be a great game who Utah really played other than Pac 12 or BYU Wood played that two years ago they would’ve won the pac 12
Driving clicks each week by predicting a BYU upset. Even a broken clock is right two times a day. You won't be right now. The only way you can predict this is if you haven't watched Utah's offense. Unless their Defense scores 14 points, there is NO WAY Utah wins!
In the pac, someone would always ruin the season for top teams. Big12's best teams suck, nobody is gonna ruin anyone's season. Without Texas or Ok, this conference really is easier to win for the top teams. Which is good cause big 12 could get 2 teams now. Utah will lose out, worst Utah squad this century. Kyle can quit now, he's run this team into the ground with his stupid Isaac experiment.
Utah's chances of winning are even lower because RES might very well become LES. The Utes will be listening to the national anthem surrounded by blue, not red.
If BYU turns it over, they can lose no question. But that Utah offense is so awful, the Utah D will have to score points to make it a game. Utah doesn't have good enough QB play to burn the BYU defense. That is the reality of this game. Rose or Wilson are gonna stink it up again. That is who they are in 2024. Also, LJ Martin was hurt and didn't play vs SMU or KState. Since he got back, this O is better. When you compare those games, you can't forget that.
I know it will be a tough game. Utah will throw everything they have at BYU. But it will be like Arizona, BYU is bigger than Utah's team. I think BYU will win 34-0.
Why does the feel like just another BYU hater podcast? Every show you did last week had the title BYU is gonna get beat. Gets old bru. Byu gonna rock utahs socks. They are so dialed in its not even funny. This game isnt even close to a sellout right now. There might be more Y fans in those stands
2 weeks ago. Id say beware. This is utahs superbowl. By they are so on life support. Even a week off wont help. Rice eccles stadium is 48 miles from lavelle edwards stadium. Salt lake county and utah county is home to 90%of both teams rosters. No home feild advantage its byus game
Totally overlook collin Oliver and nick Martin injured, both last year all Americans but talk about utah and their injuries. Those 2 all Americans that okst lost on their defense would totally not make a difference in any of their games this year, none.
As a fan who has watched this "war" since the early '70s, Utah ALWAYS plays BYU like a pack of rabid dogs. Utah will throw everything at BYU. Their major focus will be, and I hate to say this, but it is their MO, to take the QB out of the game. That is who they are. They don't just want to beat BYU, they want to destroy their season. Sorry. Same as it ever was.
Yeah.. it ain't happening this year. The Utes will put up a physical battle. But it won't be an upset. BYU will stomp Utah this year and because of that, Kyle won't quit this season.
I think all the BYU Homer's are going to hurt BYU's intensity going into this game next week. Do I think BYU is the favorite? No doubt. Is this the Holy War? What do Runnin Puke fans and the team have left to play for folks??? They have been drubbed the last 3 long years after losing to BYU. Those who haven't noticed the ridiculous levels of hatred of BYU by Ute fans this year need to take off their Blue Goggles and get real... The only thing Utah needs to have in this game is decent QB play to be in it. The extra juice will be there BECAUSE this is Zach Wilson's little Brother who chose Utah over following in his Brother's foot steps. This kid is Utahs Future and he can Cement his Utah Legacy as a Freshman by beating an undefeated BYU and stepping out of his brothers shadow.... of all the games left on BYU's schedule THIS GAME is the most problematic because of all the rivalry factors and the fact that Utah has Nothing to lose... I hope BYU's football team is playing Cam Risings media days video over and over. No Cam isn't playing, Zach Wilson's little brother is playing and that is all the extra juice Utah will need...
They’ll need more than good QB play. They need better play calling, they need some receivers, they need an offensive line. They’re on a 4 game streak without the defense having a single sack. IF they are going to pull it off they need a lot of holes to be plugged up.
Okay Drake. Since you've had Locked on Utes host will you also have Locked on Cougs (BYU) host Jake Hatch? It's only fair since BYU not Utah is carrying the Big 12 conference. Thanks. www.youtube.com/@LockedOnCougars
