Gripping down is the same as cutting down the shaft as far as setup to the ball and hand distance to the club head however there are differences to how the club will feel and potentially play. Cutting down the shaft removes shaft material so the total weight would be lower by 3-5 grams depending on the material at the tip or butt section that was cut. Cutting from the tip versus butt section will change the shafts stiffness so you need to take that into account. If you cut 1 inch off a driver it will change the swing weight by about 6 points making the head feel lighter. If you grip down 1 inch it changes swing weight by about 7 points and lastly if grip down you will be using a thinner section of the grip than normal so that may affect things as well. The question for you is do you want to grip down on shots where accuracy is a premium or do you want to play a driver that is shorter all the time. If you do decide you want to cut the shaft you will need to add weight to the head either with hot melt or after market weights as most oems don't offer weighting adjustments for custom orders with the exception of PXG being the best at it and titleist probably being second.
