If you are new here, hi! My name is Rachel and I am a UC Berkeley graduate (Class of 2020) where I double majored in cognitive science and legal studies.

Congratulations! I hope you don't mind me asking questions. Did you have a lot of experiences/activities in high school that are related to environmental design? If so, did you write about them in PIQs? I'm interested in CED, but I only have activities that are related to environment (environmental organization, compost program, advocacy). Since I do not have experiences in environmental design, I'm wondering if I should apply to L & S instead. Thank you for your input in advance! : )

@@tomoko4387 hello! I didn’t have any design experience apart from taking digital photography and IB art in high school. I didn’t talk explicitly about design in my piq’s but I did talk about my creative side in one. CED doesn’t expect you to have any prior experience so i would recommend applying!

Sarah looks and talks similarly to an architect I know, this architect was my mentor and helped solidify my interest in urban planning (and talked me through college decisions! i was so close to going to UC Davis). Architects are the best people, I swear. I am an urban studies major (so excited for this year) and I was wondering how hard it is and how many people double major in CED. I would be interested in maybe SED, studio classes and critiques sound really fun and software representing ideas is something I want to be skilled in. Thank you for this informative video!

Sarah’s response: So glad you had a mentor to chat with in Architecture, and so glad you chose Berkeley (go Bears)! I would say that within CED, it's most common to pick a major and a minor (and often, that minor was Sustainable Environmental Design for a lot of folks), however I do know students that decided to double major, so it's certainly possible. The important thing to consider is that majors like Architecture & Landscape Architecture are very studio-heavy majors, which means that they are time intensive and might be generally harder to add another major to. I majored in Architecture and minored in Spanish, and my course load was pretty demanding. However Urban Studies does not require as much studio/project-based time, so it would be a bit easier to double major! The classes for SED also heavily overlap with the other majors, so that would be a pretty great option for you! The Urban studies major is also rather varied and you have the chance to choose your focus quite a bit once you get into junior & senior year with capstone projects/work experience. To learn software/3d modeling tools like Rhino & Adobe and to get experience with critiques, I definitely recommend taking a studio course if you can - the best way to learn is through projects! These are the most time-intensive and hands-on classes in my opinion. Or, you can look for seminars that teach those software tools - generally taught by graduate students!

60 degrees in Phoenix this morning! Highs today 85! Daily Record high temperature for today is 103 degrees set in 2003! Luckily we are not that hot!

Hi! I’m currently at a community college but I’m looking to transfer into Berkeley CED and I was wondering how competitive it is? And if there’s anything I could do to stand out

Hi Rachel, thank you so much for the helpful videos including this one! I understand that you can apply to college of L & S and later transfer into CED as a Berkeley student. My questions are: (1) when you apply to CED, is your chance of getting in (acceptance rate for CED) smaller than getting into L&S? (2) If you apply to CED and get rejected by CED, are you also rejected by Berkeley in general? (meaning, is it possible to get into Berkeley (L&S) when rejected by CED?
@rachel_lin

Hi Tomoko, thank you for watching! 1. I do not believe Berkeley publishes the acceptance rate for CED to the public. Less people apply to CED, so in theory you are "competing" against less students for a spot at Berkeley within CED, but CED as a college admits less students as it is a small college on campus. Compared to L&S, a lot of students apply to L&S but L&S also admits the most students because a majority of Berkeley's majors are in this college. So which college you apply to Berkeley under really depends on what major you are interested in. If you have a lot of experience and extracurriculars that are Design/Architecture based that would support a story through your PIQs and Activities Section about why/how you are interested in Architecture generally, then applying to CED would be helpful because it would demonstrate your interest and your application materials would support that. 2. Yes, if you apply to CED and are rejected, you are also rejected to Berkeley in general. You are accepted or rejected from Berkeley as a whole based on the college you apply to on your original application. So same thing goes for vice versa- if you apply to L&S and are rejected, you are also rejected from Berkeley as a whole. However, for specific programs like the MET program within the College of Engineering (COE), since this program is so small, if you are rejected from MET, you are still considered for admission into COE and can get accepted/rejected from COE.

Hi Rachel, I’m an incoming student to CED. Thank you for making this video, it had so much helpful information! I’ve been watching some of your other Berkeley videos too :) I like your Cal merch…where did you buy your school apparel? Do you have any recommendations?
@rachel_lin

Hi Hanna, congrats!! I would recommend checking out the Student Stores, the official Cal student store is in MLK on Sproul Plaza. Across the street from the official student store, there's a place called Fall Rush, which is on Bancroft street. On Bancroft up towards Jamba Juice area, there's another store called Bancroft Clothing - I like the Berkeley apparel here and it seemed to be less expensive than the other Cal gear stores. On the corner of Durant and Telegraph (next to Unit 3 basically), there's another store called Bear Basics which sells merch too - this one is also good and seemingly less expensive. Hope this helps! Once you're on campus walking around you'll easily spot these stores!

@@tomoko4387 Hi Tomoko! It's neat that you're considering CED! I'm a transfer student, so my experience with admissions is a little bit different. In high school, I had some experience in Architecture/Design. From my experience, CED has a strong focus in sustainability/the environment. Including any extracurriculars on your application is a good idea. *Please note I'm not an admissions representative.* I also recommend checking out the CED website, attending some info sessions, and possibly reaching out! Good luck! -Hanna :)

I was admitted into CED for architecture! As I live about 20 minutes from campus, my parents plan on me commuting, but would you say it is better to live on campus especially since studio classes require a lot of late nights in the studio?
@rachel_lin
@rachel_lin Год назад
Congrats on your acceptance!! Sarah says - I would definitely say I benefitted a lot from living on campus! If you have a car it's doable to commute and I know some students who did. However, there are definitely a lot of late nights in studio and if you're staying up with little sleep it's much safer to walk/bus back a short distance. Also, it is easier to get to and from studio often when you live closer. Hope this helps!
