Colombian people is just friendly with foreigners and like to have people feeling at home when in Colombia. That's why we try to guide or help foreigners when they look like they don't speak Spanish or seem to be lost.
I bet that is so incredibly comforting for you. My fiance is from the border of Canada and North NY state. She learned Spanish in HS and was certified Bilingual by the state of NY. Anyway, she's a manager at a restaurant and she used to have only Spanish speaking customers come in sometimes and ordering. We lived in the middle of Indiana Indiana and Illinois. (There are very scarce lantino people in that area. I was one of like 10 in my city for reference.) She was the only person in the store that could communicate with them in spanish. She told me the look on their face when someone could talk to them in their main language was something she will never forget. I'm glad you can bond with people in a different country based on the language you speak.
