I have the same NJ note in PMG 65EPQ. The NJ notes are watermarked. The “s”es in colonial times were printed like “f” when it was an *internal* “s.” When it was the first or last letter, it was “normal.” The Latin translation for the GA note is “Either death, or happy victory!”

Interesting currency. Your comment at the end about "we don't know" about historic economic turmoil struck home. I was born in the late 50s and grew up in the 60s & 70s and am bemused by the "end of days," "economic collapse next week," etc. sentiments that are now prevalent. Having lived through hot wars, cold wars, riots, assassinations, double digit inflation, stagflation, gas lines,18% mortgages, cheese lines, bulls, bears, bubbles, and great recessions I remain sanguine.

Very cool currency, I have a similar new jersey 1 shilling. If you hold it up to the light it has a water mark that says new jersey. I discovered it by accident as I was examining it..

My ancestors were living in Savannah starting in about 1770. Just think:One of my ancestors, may have used your Ga.note, at the local Waffle House. LOL.

The "f" style s is used within words, the regular s when it is at the beginning or end. It apparently originated in ancient Latin cursive script.

Ha Ben correct me if I am wrong but didn't they use the leaf on the old currency as a counterfeiting defense?
