400MB/s is all-Intra - it's designed for motion so that you don't get compression artefacts between frames. If you're filming a static glass you get no benefit whatsoever - you're simply wasting space on your card. Maybe I missed it, but are you recording the GH5 with 10-bit 4:2:2? If it's 4:2:0, you're already working with one hand tied behind your back

400Mb/s in GH5 is ALL-I, so every frame is compresed separetly and is not base on previous one like in 150Mb/s. So overall compression is almost the same. It's good for shooting action or sports, where subject is changing position really fast, because then there is no "strange" movements in frame.

The 400Mbps codec improves how movement is recorded, because it is compressing each frame individually. It is not supposed to fix noise issues. After simple noise reduction with NEAT VIDEO v4, you will have none of those dancing noise issues.

Andyax The GH5 and many other cameras have more stops of dynamic range between middle grey and pure white at higher ISO's. I am noticing that the EVA is performing better in the retention of detail in the highlights but the ISO is 800 and the GH5 is set to 400. I bet if you set the GH5 to 800 you would have had much better detail in the highlights. I don't know why most people in bright environments automatically turn the ISO down. I get that higher ISO brings noise and when you have plenty of light the thought is "why would I introduce noise when I have all this light" The opposite is true in dark environments, turn the ISO to a low number to have more stops of dynamic range in your shadows. ISO directly correlates to dynamic range. Point your camera at bright fluffy clouds at a 200 ISO and 800 ISO while exposing properly with the aperture or shutter speed and notice how much more dynamic range their is at 800. This is a great reason why neutral density filters should be used outside and lights inside.

It is a lot to think about even before shooting to get good quality. So--using additional lighting can make a difference but it will also increase setup time and costs. I will make due with the GH4 but it is working for me and my projects for now. I like to see the future of production and how technology is working out for us :)

More MBps means more data , so you have more colour information. It only helps the colour noise in low-light, not the low light isues itself. Only more stops or a higher F-stop can fix that.(or lighting) I use the gh4 10bit with Vlog. When shooting at higher bitrates my colour corrections become easier because there is just more info! Great video!

eva1 is v-log 14 step dynamic 100% IRE range and gh5 is v-log l and is about 12 step dynamic 80% IRE max. Then you have to expose differed to get max power those cameras.

Great video. I agree about the GH5's overly sharp look. I'm ok with it for video but it kind of bothers me for photos. Also agreed that 400Mbps isn't as cool as it seemed when it was announced. I really wish I had an external recorder just to see the GH5 footage recorded in ProRes straight out of camera. Makes me curious how some of these minor image quality defects are sensor based or compression/codec based. Ola seems like a smart fellow, good analysis from both of you.

Would be great to know your picture profile settings in the GH5 camera, like: sharpness, noise reduction. I always use -5 for both in VLog
@DennisSchmitz
@DennisSchmitz 6 лет назад
Zsolt Cselenyi even then the GH5 looks way too harsh and oversharpened. The Vlog issues with heavy color grading (horizontal lines) won't disappear. The EVA-1 looks like a good companion to the ARRI Alexa and others. Great color science, dynamic range and no overprocessing like the GH5 does - it's biggest weakness tbh

400Mp/s allows the codec to compress each frame rather than averaging each group of frames, so much better for color grading, especially in shadow detail. ProRes and DNXHR compress like this at a higher data rate, however.

Fascinating comparison! Man I wish there was a mini EVA in a GH style body with S35 sensor (even if the body has to be a little bigger). Give it a m43 mount so we can attach APSC lenses with straight adapters or Full Frame lenses with Speedboosters to use the full S35 sensor but also use our m43 lenses in a crop sensor mode... the best of both worlds! I just love the look from the EVA. I'm so close to getting the GH5 or GH5S but I feel like it's just a compromise for the look I really want. But the EVA's production camera style body doesn't suit my style of shooting and I don't need the extra broadcast features. I'll keep dreaming and perhaps the GH5S will have to do until that day comes ;)

Like what you guyz have done in this Real World test of the 3 cams. i use exclusively the GH4 for my Pro work and image quality tests. i without question move to the GH5s for most if not ALL of my Cinema work. Now for those who want to know what i used to shoot The extreme close ups of the House Fly opening sequence for BREAKING BAD's (Season 3 Episode 10), it was the Sony C3 HD Handy Cam. As for the GH4, i don't have Noise issues due to i only use ROKINON Cinema 1.4 / T4 & 5 lenses. Which allows me to shoot at 200 iso and never have the need to go above 640. Once again, Nice "Real World" test, if you can, Next time use 1.4 primes at the lowest iso and you'll have much better results when it comes to Noise and overall cinematic image. quality. Thanx again. Keep up the good work. D.

The most obvious difference between the cameras is the 35mm sensor on the EVA1 vs. the micro four thirds sensor on the GH5. The bigger sensor on the EVA1 spreads the pixels apart and that allows the camera to capture more color and exposure data per pixel = the higher Mbps needed for in-camera processing
@Rafaelinux

Great video. Makes me want the EVA-1 even more. The GH5 shows the exact same weaknesses (overprocessing with sharpening and NR at -5, oversharpening, horizontal banding in VLog/HLG, noise reduction issues, weird color in Daylight, motion judder etc) I ran into while doing a feature film (info and screenshots at IMDb: The House Invictus) fully shot on the GH5. The EVA-1 blows it out of the water. More detail, but soft like on a RED camera, great DR and amazing color science!

400mb on the gh5 is for the all I compression than a long gop. Basically all I gives you smoother motion in more chaotic scenes :) the increased data rate also gives you better 10 bit v log images :D I wonder how the Gh5 with an external recorder shooting in prores would compare to the eva 1?

GengarTV pretty much all low grade 4K cameras ouputs 4K through hdmi. But most of them only gives 8bit. Sometimes 4:2:0, sometimes 4:2:2... but always 8 bit. The only ones that output 10bit are the GH4 and the GH5

4:46 that's why you shouldn't shoot in v-log if your content isn't going to be compressed (otherwise it's not very noticeable)

Sorry, but it's like comparing apples to oranges. Perhaps good to demonstrate the difference between a consumer and a semi-pro or pro product, but else? In my opinion, the GH5(S, M2) does an incredible job for the price tag it has. Want to shoot movies? Buy ARRI Alexa or Red.

I'm not sure how good the iwltbap V-log to 709 is, if it's made for the GH series I think it might be better to use the LUT panasonic themselves made, because the red channels of the EVA1 need some tuning compared to other color gamuts. The LUT can be downloaded here: pro-av.panasonic.net/en/varicam/35/dl.html Or you can just use the ACES cct - V35 conversion within Resolve. @Andyax - Could I ask you if you too have an issue with the mic input levels? I've been trying to contact support about it but they're useless in their responses. Whenever I turn the audio pan-pot to below 5, it seems to limit the input, making audio clip (WITH condenser mics) - I've recorded some loud events, and my audio will start clipping at -25dBfs and sound distorted. Do you have this issue too? (I do separate recordings aswell though for these but it's still strange behaviour!) Heres a pic of some RAW footage where I adjust the audio levels mid clip: i.imgur.com/kQP0vxr.png

Birk Groven that's not the issue here. The GH5 does lots of artificial sharpening even when set to -5, the EVA1 doesn't and therefore looks way more cinematic

I think answer to ur compression question lies in precision of the engine of compression. The EVA1 should have higher numbers due to all internal processes & processor quality. More room in EVA1's files means more artistic choices, bloggers do not need that much. But now they have to forget what u show here...

At about 10 min, you discuss the differences between the GH5 at 400mbps All-I and the EVA1 at 150mbps IPB codecs. Here are my "$0.02 worth": (and probably worth every penny ;-) ) First, comparing the two different cameras at two different bit rates to try to determine something about codec compression artifacts is not valid. Also, I would imagine that the EVA1 has substantially better processing power, which would allow for notably better compression with the same codecs. You should compare the 400 and 150mbps codecs on the GH5 to try to reach a conclusion. Second, at least in my experience, visually, I've found that an All-I codec needs about double the data rate of an IPB codec to get equivalent picture quality. Since the IPB codec is at 150mbps, my expectation would be that an "equivalent" All-I codec would need to be at 300mbps. Since Panasonic is using a 400mbps All-I codec, my expectation would be that there would be a bit of improvement between the two, but not a huge improvement (+100mbps All-I (400-300=100mbps) would be about the equivalent of +50mbps IPB). Thus, if my experience holds up (and I could be wrong and maybe it is 3:1 ratio, not 2:1) a 400mbps All-I codec is ~equivalent to a 200mbps IPB codec in PQ. Third, Panasonic has cautioned that users should not expect to see big differences between the All-I and IPB codecs, but rather that the All-I codec is meant to be a NLE friendly codec for users who can afford the storage space and don't have the time to transcode footage into an edit friendly proxy (and deal with that workflow). Frankly, I'd love to see a comparison between the two codecs from the same camera. Also, it would be very interesting to see how the GH5s fits into this. Thanks for the great videos!

I've had numerous supervised grading sessions with DOP, producer or director next to me: You'd be surprised what they get hung up on. Noise, grain, highlight rolloff, that slight over saturated yellow in the lower left corner which completely distracts them from seeing the full picture. The list goes on. :) When I grade I usually find the most interesting frame within a shot, do all my work, then scrub back and forth or play in sequence with a couple shots before and after the actual shot. Then go back to approximately the same frame I graded on unless there are problem areas.
