My color mixing videos recently went viral on TikTok, and I put this compilation together so that it's easier to binge them. 😀
This is my second TikTok color mixing compilation. In it, I match the color of four different kinds of leaves. I also match the color of a radish, onion, avocado, kiwi, and the pit of an avocado.
Paint mixing is a fun way to improve your color mixing skills. You only need a few colors and a paint brush to start. I recommend using a limited palette of colors instead of buying a large array of paints.
Using fewer colors simplifies your choices since you don't have so many colors to choose from. It's better to get really familiar with just a handful of colors and how they interact with each other.
This approach is better than having more colors and not knowing them very well. This is what I teach in my course.
You only need to learn a little bit of the color theory, and then spend a lot of time practicing mixing colors. Many books about color get too deep into color theory and I find that it's not very practical as a painter.
A color wheel can help you to see the relationship between colors but they're not that useful as a color mixing guide. Check out my video about color wheels if you want to see how they can sometimes fall short. • The Color Wheel Is Wrong

🎨 COLORS
I use Golden open acrylics and the colors that I use are listed below. You can also use Liquitex Basics which are a more affordable student grade acrylic. The open acrylics dry slower so that's why they don't dry out in my tin.
If you use Liquitex Basics you probably will only want to squeeze out enough paint for your color mixing session. The alternative is to buy a wet palette which will keep your paints wet overnight.
Another slight difference is that I recommend the Primary Yellow in the Liquitex line. I tested a variety of yellows in this line of acrylics and I think this one is the most versatile.

If you use Golden OPEN acrylics, you can leave out the sponge. In fact, I just squeeze my paints out onto the palette that I recommend above, and then store it in the sta-wet palette without the spongs.
