This video was scripted, filmed and edited before the allegations of abuse perpetrated by the director Richard Stanley came to light. This video does not condone, endorse or accept the actions of the director, and any praise you may hear in the video is not an absolution or acceptance for the director's alleged actions. Neither this movie nor this review are tools to be used to lessen, minimize or extenuate the severity of these allegations.
I read that the SpectreVision production company has dropped Richard Stanley because of these allegations, which is not surprising. I think this likely kills any future plans for a new "Dunwich Horror" film, let alone a third movie. After the failed plans of del Toro's "At the Mountains of Madness", this is yet another blow to the hopes of fans for high-quality Lovecraftian films in the foreseeable future.
Yes I know i got the meteor/ meteorite thing the wrong way round, you can stop telling me. I was gonna re-record it, but with the copyright issues the video got caught up in it wasn’t worth going through that again.
another fun fact about Robert E Howard. he helped a lot with Lovecraft's Xenophobia, in letter correspondences he described cultures he was researching. that was the difference between Howard and Lovecraft, Lovecraft was afraid of the unknown, Howard embraced it and celebrated it.
@@gazzhumbly5433 yea same here . Freddy Krueger scared the shit out of me as a kid but then learning about The Old Ones is even creepier . Things that we can't even comprehend that usually sees us as insignificant as we see bugs . Just damn
"Lavinia prefers fast food to her family's home cooking." I agree with your comment about that contradiction with her Wican beliefs making her more human and adding depth to her character but... maybe we say that because we haven't TRIED her mom's cooking...
The Mayans... Are still around. The civilization collapsed, but there are still Mayans and speakers of Mayan language. It’s an interesting reference, though I think it’s more to show that Nathan has no clue what he’s doing.
Nathan would be a tinhorn. A city slicker trying to be a farmer. I could have used the original definition of dude. But he actually does put it the work. You can tell his experience is from Google searching, but actually was able to pull it off, even though it's pure accident. Kinda like Oliver douglas but with less acreage.
This was definitely the best lovecraftian inspired movie I've seen. I certianly hope the director gets what he wants and the trilogy gets made and executed properly like this movie.
It's a good Lovecraft movie. Not really inspired by since it's an adaption. The best inspired by would be films like Alien,The Thing and The Mouth Of Madness.
For he knows the gate. He is the gate. He is the gate and it’s key. Past, present and Future are all one within him. An Outer God of unfathomable knowledge. He is mighty Yog Sothoth, the Opener of the Way. Lavinia called out to the Cosmos, but didn’t know who would hear her call. She also did it twice, once with a generic ritual and once with blood rituals.
The light in the attic definitely was deliberate, the kids mention at one point that they can't rember when the sun set/rises as if time is just switching when there not looking.
I had always assumed the "blasted heath" would be dark, and black, like charcoal or burnt wood. Seeing being depicted in white was VERY clever, I think. Depending on weather you're using additive or subtractive colours, 'white' is either the presence of ALL, or complete ABSENCE of colour. There's certainly something to be said about the visuals of going from an "imaginary" colour to either a complete saturation / lack of colour, even beyond the atomic imagery.
This is the best film adaption of a Lovercraft story that I've ever seen. Its not the best Lovecraftian film I've ever seen (that's In the Mouth of Madness), but it's still pretty damn good. Bravo Mr Stanley, it's great to hear from you again!!!
Interestingly the symbol on Lavinia's forehead at the end of the movie is the rune 'Othel' and runes are used a lot by wiccans and pagans alike as a magical alphabet. In its upright position Othel 'indicates one who is consumed by an ideal or vision' or someone 'inspired by the past' (quoted from The Runes by Lisa Pechel). Which is cool as she is literally giving Ward a vision, and experiencing one herself. It also represents possessions and things money can buy 'usually land or a building' which connects to the fact that it's the land being effected, and the house that is then taken. And also, could literally be a reference to her being 'possessed' by the colour. With regards to her use of the Necromicon as a non-fiction book of magical spells/symbols, I have come across one or two people in the pagan community who do believe in its lore, treating it as similar to the Key of Solomon. Sounds silly, but yeah, it happens.
Wrote this elsewhere but I'll add it here too, her carving 'solve' on her right hand is possibly a reference to Eliphas Levi's Baphomet which has 'solve' on its right arm and 'coagula' on it's left which are terms apparently used in alchemy for taking apart and conjoining which we obviously see in the film. I guess it hints not only at her desperation to try anything for aid but also the influence the colour has. Also regarding the Necronomicon, obviously for us the Simon Necronomicon is a real thing but in universe after so many years perhaps there are bastardised mass market reprints of bits of the 'real' Necronomicon. While people can't take it out of the libraries that hold copies those libraries do let people in to read them, perhaps someone with malicious intent or just enterprising might decide to print stuff they recall and pad it out with other assorted occult knowledge
Very few movies ever made me want to tap out. But the scene where they’re all just sitting in the attic, and Theresa is moaning and Jack is just crying in pain. Nearly broke me.
I love this movie man. As a huge Lovecraft fan, I was pleased with this take on the short story. I can't wait to see what is done with The Dunwich Horror
Wow, that was one of the best disections of a movie ive seen in awhile. It pointed out stuff i would have never caught, like the phone. I definetly watching this again. Great job to D!
Have you. seen my review of underwater ? I only ask because this seems like the kind of comment on that video not this one, regardless really appreciate you watching
Regarding the symbols Louvenia carves on her hand and forehead, the one on her forehead resembles (very closely) the norse rune Othala. Some of the ones on her hand could also be variations of runes as well, specifically Ingwaz and possible Algiz
I believe the words she carves on her hands are in reference to the words you commonly see on Eliphas Levi's Baphomet, 'solve' and 'coagula' which are apparently related to alchemy. I don't think we see her carve 'coagula' but carving 'solve' on her right hand would be in line with the Baphomet image.
I'm new sub here, can't even describe how much I love your review, just want you to know that maybe you don't have very large amount of subs but seem like your fan(such as me) appreciate and respect you greatly and that is what matter the most.
The Simon Necronomicon is an all Sumerian based book with serious padding of a dramatic Lovecraftian sort. (I slightly knew the typist through mutual friends. She poured salt over her typewriter as she worked.) Oddly there are no banishings, only calling spells in the book. Lavinia should have invested in a better grimoire.
I'm really excited to see what Richard Stanley can do with The Dunwich Horror. Also it's one of the Lovecraft stories that's most suited to a film adaptation.
I look at your channel from an educational aspect. Feels like my ability to set the tone and building up tension as well as character development is improving from listening to your reviews
I've been watching this channel for years, and it's hands down one of the best film review sites on all of RU-vid. Kudos to your efforts, and thank you for sharing them with your audience. 🤜🤛
Lavinia is such a weird name, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Especially since the rest of the family has normal modern sounding names. And being a Lovecraft fan, Lavinia sticks out even more because it's a singular name even in his mythology. What would have been interesting is if she had survived the movie but the color leaving had made her an albino. Or at least bleached her skin similar to how it bleaches the earth. And had driven her mad. Then she could become Lavinia Whately in the next movie. GImmicky, yes. But a way to tie the trilogy together by having one character lead to the next movie.
Since the Color messes with time and space, she could have indeed been transported into the Whateley household many years before to become "the twisted albino". And given how you mentioned her albinism could be seen as similar to the blasted earth, it wouldn't be out of place at all!
@@tuskinekinase That's my thinking. Either Lavinia mysteriously shows up in nearby Dunwich and draws the attention of old man Whateley, or he might even retrieve her from whatever dimension she landed in.
I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but the quote on the wall of Benny's room "No Flesh Shall Be Spared" is likely a reference to a movie called Hardware that Stanley directed in 1990, and was also the title of a 2009 documentary, where Stanley is credited as himself. Excellent review for (my opinion, at least) one of the greatest Lovecraft adaptations ever put to screen.
I've been binging on all of your film reviews and I just want to say how much I enjoy your knowledge and research, I also love the weapons you collect, if I could I would also own 'The Beast'. :-)
This was the first story of HP's that I read. I saw the film for it's only showing one night in February in Cincinnati. I'd love to see a rendition of Shadow Over Innsmouth. Lovecraft was a genius. As is Nicholas Cage.
Been watching you for just shy over 7 years and lowkey one my favorite smaller reviewers since orginal cube review and ghostship, I mean thoroughly enjoy rlm and nostalgia critic but you've been an enigma of pleasure I come back to every now and then and It's like I've never missed a beat with you man I could go away for a year and spam watch them again please keep them up.
I'm glad you enjoy the video and yes there will be more on the way, but there is one thing I need to point out, I never reviewed the original cube movie.
Before I even watch this, man, can I just say how long I've been waiting for it? You're one of my favorite RU-vid channels, hands down, and you're reviewing one of my new favorite horror films, which is adapted from my all time favorite Lovecraft story, which, if memory serves me, was also Lovecraft's own personal favorite story he ever wrote. Before this even begins I know you'll knock it out of the park, man! I'm gettin' me some POPCORN!
Hi hope your well. Love your reviews. Thought this was a great movie. This and underwater are great lovecraft adaptations. Can't wait to see more of your reviews. Keep safe and well Mr Deusdaecon. Cheers
This was always my favorite Lovecraft story because it was always a great way to show a truly alien lifeform and it was so amazing for its mutations and the mental degradation making it seem like it is something that even if you survive will change you forever. (which actually seems like its a perfect reason for the people going mad in modern day instead of the Lovecraft troupe of going nuts after only a few traumas or weird things.) I don't mind her being named Lavinia, more than one person can have that name.
Just wanna say, you are the only RU-vidr I have encountered in the wild actually talking about Lovecraft adaptations and Lovecraft Homages. Thank you for spreading the word of "In The Mouth of Madness" in your previous work. Also check out: The Otherworld. A doc by Richard Stanley. You will see the real life inspiration for Tommy Chong's character. Stanley also chose "Color Out of Space," because it's his favorite. This endith the essay. Back to the forest I go.
Watching this again almost a year later. Getting excited for the next Lovecraft Month. Your reviews are so incredibly dense and rich they're pretty much companion pieces. Cannot wait to see what films you do this month. Thank you.
I'll be honest when I heard the daughter's name was Lavinia and her hobbies, I thought it was implying she was going to be THAT Lavinia when they get to The Dunwich Horror.
Thanks for doing this series ! Im a sucker for anything lovecraft related and was able to discover some new amazing additions to the mythos i wouldn't have found otherwise if not checking your playlist for "HP lovecraft month"
In the summer of about 1993 I and some friends were walking around center city Philadelphia. I saw on a shrub, and picked up, a praying mantis, hot pink in color. It rode on my shoulder for over an hour as we walked along. I say hot pink, but it was much like the color filters this movie presents. Going back to my childhood crayon sets, magenta was darker. Is also one of those staining, fugitive pigments.
This month was really awesome in terms of your content. Really enjoyed learning about these movies I don't normally check out. This video was awesome even with the tricks to get around copyright issues. Very well done and I hope you have an awesome halloween man :D
One of the scenes that I thought was a great moment/writing, is when they are in the attic and the kids leave (Cage about to shoot his wife/son), and the oldest son says to his father (with great intonation) “I love you, dad.” Was just a great touch.
I do not comment often. However, I wanted to let you know I love Lovecraft month and your breakdowns are amazing. Your insight makes me enjoy these movies even more.
Color Out Of Space is my favorite of the Lovecraft short stories. And the scariest to me. When reading it the first time I leapt out of my skin when startled by my phone ringing. This rendition of a Lovecraft story is the best. Everyone involved really seemed to understand that it’s what you don’t see that makes these stories so horrific. I can’t wait for the next two. And to that. This video is the best dives into the film and short story I’ve seen thus far. Well done.
Holy shit, that finger cutting scene! I don’t know why but in this movie that scene REALLY got to me. Probably an indication of how damn good the build up in this movie is.
@@deusdeaconReviews awesome i cant wait ... i loved your look into the Silence of the Lamp movies and honestly the Wishmasters had me laughing with 3 and 4
She may be Wiccan but that spell she's doing at the start is ceremonial magick of the Golden Dawn tradition which had roots in Rosecrucianism and Freemasonry. It is the Western Hermetic tradition.
I watched this after seeing the film and it was a great source to understand the film and all the Lovecraft references. It actually led me to read The Willows, Call of Cthulhu, Dunwich Horror, and Shadow Over Innsmouth. In short, it got me into Lovecraft horror in a deeper way. This guy hasn’t posted in a while but he definitely has a effect.
"... the imagery also reminded me of..." The Whisperer in Darkness, oh yeah, I noticed that right away complete with a voice on a recording expositing away "... the Music of Erich Zann" Huh?
“a voice through a speaker “ thats your connection there, Everything else about whisperer i cant see the connection, where as Erich zann has the protagonist stumble upon Erich zann now a desiccated corpse (just like the film) and hears the sounds of the mans activities, in the story his violin in the film Ezras voice, granted its all opinion, but don’t tell me theres no resemblance.
@@deusdeaconReviews In Whisperer in Darkness, Akeley was taken by the Migo... possibly, I wouldn't trust them myself... and in his place in the finale was one of the aliens using his face and arms as a disguise. That reminds me more of what was happening in Color out of Space... the man is completely gone, taken over by the alien while his parts remain and the person he was only saved to tape, garbled and unearthly. Maybe it can double as both but everything about his situation from setting to isolation to alien visitors screams Whisperer to me.
This movie was great! For the sound of well the best explanation (or the one i liked more) is that his brother fell into the well and got mutated. Since the thing distort space and time he came back from the future to comunicate to his family.
no video out this saturday, but there will be a short teaser trailer, then its gonna be the first two episodes of the hannibal tv show, then a movie review, so fours weeks but content in between, and dont forget im live on twitch 5 days a week if you need more content
I can’t wait for the dunwich horror movie I wonder what the third movie would be? I’m hoping it’s the shadow over innsmouth or the call of Cthulhu But who’s knows
@@deusdeaconReviews Yeah I get it but what I’m saying these movies aren’t the biggest budget so I was thinking realistic So SOI is would be more likely but I would like a big budget COC movie
Honestly I'm glad I found your channel this week. I think I've watched 5 or 6 of your videos do far. The last video was In The Mouth of Madness. You've got a great personality and great takes. I loved The Color Out of Space. The Block Island Sound was awesome ad well. I did a movie review on the Sound as well.
@@nicholascage173 I hear that. Some parts of the world are losing rights over fear. It has also divided people. So God will need to heal the minds and spirits of the people.
@@nicholascage173 honestly I became a fan of the later work. Mandy was great, Color Out of Space. Next viewing will be wonderland. How long have you been a fan of mine though?
@@nicholascage173 now that's a deal! 2 for one. Make sure to catch my review of Color Out of Space coming this week , I don't know if will be on par with Deuce but it will be good😎
The symbol on levinias (probably mispelled that) head looks like the hunter Mark from bloodborne which had a dlc similar to the shadow over innsmouth with a fishing hamlet having people becoming fish-like. The symbol also kinda looks like a body hanging by its feet with its hands bound.
Surprised there was no mention of the original attempt at adapting the color out of space into a film with the movie called the curse (1987). Would've loved to hear you're opinion on that take of the story.
2:00 Never thought I'd hear Lovecraft being the source for such a strong emotional connection. ^^ 13:50 I have to agree with him on that. Humanoid aliens are a pet peeve of mine too.
I still think the best way to do a Lovecraft film justice is to set the film in the 1920's or 30's. What interested me most about the story was the idea that the Color may have been some kind of alien intelligence that travels from world to world. I'll tell you one thing, it's really annoying when the Color shows up in Arkham Horror the board game. Lol.
30:55 - 31:35 😱😱😱Wow, another creepy critter integrated into the mythos. Good eye there, Deus. Wonder when we'll see another "Horrifying Act of Nature" bit in H.P. Lovecraft Month. You should do a small educational show about these sorts of creatures, and how they could be used in horror stories😁😁😁
At 49:51 if you look at the tree that is behind the Color smoke column, it heavily resembles the Elder sign. The fact all other trees in the scene have a fair amount of leaves except that one makes me think it's an intention addition.
@@deusdeaconReviews It might be me putting my own mental spin on it and thinking too much on it. Mainly it's the way the main part of the tree goes up, then all the branches are also curved upwards on either. I know that is a general tree thing to do, but it's location behind the Color, how the branches are highlighted by the daytime sky, and quick glance made me think it could be an almost subliminal thing for viewers. Should also mention, a great review and break down.
that on lavinia forehead is othal rune, means heritage; inheritance, inherited estate, so is on lace and verry good work with runes and protection spells. also well is where odin gave his eye for more knowledge to mimir. conections :)
