This video is about using earth pigments to create a color photograph using the 19th century color carbon transfer process. The photograph printed in this video was taken by Louise Dahl-Wolfe for a 1959 issue of Vogue, and reprinted by the Wet Print with permission from Condé Nast Publishing. If you are interested in learning more about the carbon transfer process visit www.thewetprint.com.
If you are interested in learning how I calibrate prints in color with multiple tonal separations, I wrote a book earlier this year- thewetprint.com/en/digital-wo...
Pigments for making prints like this are available on The Wet Print Online store- thewetprint.com/product/color...

An interesting project would be to use blue Billie (victorian gas works used to accidentally make a Prussian blue when manufacturing coal gas) and yellow boy (a brilliant yellow from acid mine drainage that would form in the leachate). It would be a hell of an environmental awareness statement.

Fantastic video! Love the results. Huge respect for your skill and dedication. I printed a lot with cyanotype and gum in the past. Large 11x14 and 16x20 litho negatives, blown up from 35mm or 4x5 originals. I actually made color separations onto litho film and printed four color gum, or gum using cyanotype for the blue layer.

What's the reason you wait until the print is transferred to paper before using the clearing bath? I thought you could avoid a certain amount of staining by clearing on the temporary support? Can you share which sensitiser you used, because it looks more like a ferric mix rather than das? All of the hard work you put into calibration pays off in everything you do, and it's a joy to watch you put a print together.
@carbonprint
@carbonprint 3 года назад
I sometimes run into problems if I clear first on the plastic. For double transfers it's fine, but for triple transfers, the print doesn't hold up well in the final hot water bath. Sensitizer is DAS.

Fantastic. How much time went into R&D until ultimately mastering color printing, if I may ask?
@carbonprint
@carbonprint 3 года назад
I spent the first two years working 12 hours a day nearly every single day until I made a decent black and white print, at which point I started The Wet Print. Making a color print was easy, and came out just fine on the first try. The problem was finding the correct pigments, which took hundreds of hours and thousands of euros of research. For this print, using earth pigments, I spent about a month testing pigments and calibrating before making a print. This is the first print. I sell a series on calibration, which makes printing in color easy- www.thewetprint.com/digital-workshop. R&D still goes on, and will continue to go on for years.
@olafwDE

@@carbonprint I'd call that a proper commitment, wow. Thanks for the link, I just bought the series. Sorry that it took so long, your latest video was the triggering reminder :-)

@marklimbrick

I did this over 40 years ago. The bichromate gelatin is the method for silk screen printing. How are you releasing the gelatin? I also did some in camera with all day exposures.
@marklimbrick
@marklimbrick Год назад
The transfer of each colour to the backing while the previous colour is still wet? Differential shrinkage etc must be at least damp. My experience was the exposed gelatin stuck to glass plates. So one information step missing.

The image is dried between layers but then wetted as the following layer is applied.
