I saw this pop up and was like "wtf is Blue Sky?!" didn't realize Evans changed names. Fyi, I"ll be in CO this Friday thru the following Friday to finish the 14ers!

My girlfriend and I saw you on the way up! It was father’s day, and we did the tourist drive to the top of Blue Sky with my gf’s dad to celebrate, stopping at Summit Lake. We saw you and Arya (whining playfully at the mountain goats…) at the lake on the way back to the car, stopped to gawk for a second, thought “no way that is Mickey…”, and didn’t say anything😂 Highly regret not giving you kudos for the awesome content you put out for our niche CO hiking community!

You’ve been a great authority for me as I’ve gotten into the 14ers. Blue Sky was my 12th so far (I live on the east coast, so it’s gonna take me a bit to work through them). Just did it on Sunday and got home to find this in my feed. Great minds!

governer evans was a bit of a murderer

It was because it was named after an early governor of Colorado John Evans in the mid-1800s who was forced to resign his governorship after instigating the Sand Creek massacre where a cavalry of the US army murdered and mutilated hundreds of native Americans, mostly women and children, and so people understandably thought it best to not commemorate him by having a mountain named after him. The name Blue Sky was suggested by the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes who were victims of the massacre.

John Evans was the governor of Colorado and his policy calling on citizens to kill hostile indigenous tribes created a climate of hate and fear that lead to the Sandy Creek Massacre, where hundreds of peaceful indigenous people were murdered, mostly consisting of women and children. He failed to create protections for peaceful tribes and even supported the cavalry that carried out the massacre. He was forced to resign after a federal investigation showed he was responsible. The term "blue sky" has cultural significance to the two tribes involved in the massacre, the Arapaho (known as "Blue Sky People") and Cheyenne tribes. With that being said, I have no problem with people calling it Mt Evans as long as they understand the history behind the name.
