That bag of compost is a nice visual aid, but do not underestimate the amount of organic matter it takes to rehabilitate Colorado soil. We have a 1/3 acre lot and so far we've added over 20,000 lbs. of compost, leaves, and woodchip in order to turn that dry clay into something usable. Expanded shale is also useful to help your soil retain water.

Great video for the Colorado gardener. I would add: please don't water during the day...it's a waste of water, which is such a precious resource in our state and in our world.

Are there ones I can plant also from seeds that will survive the winter freeze ? ?
@TagawaGardens
@TagawaGardens 3 года назад
Thanks for asking. You could try planting perennials seeds now and it just depends on the winter that we have how well they will make it through the winter there in Ridgeway. Might be best to check with your local county extension on this question too tra.extension.colostate.edu/gardening-hort/about-gardening/

What evergreen shrubs do you recommend for creating a hedge (zone 4)? We tried wintergem boxwoods and didn't love the bronzing that happened after that early frost last year :(

Thanks for your question. Depending upon how tall you would like the hedge to be and how much sun the area gets, there are many choices. For something taller with a lot of sun, upright junipers are a good hedge and privacy shrub that is evergreen. If you would like to stop in and chat with our staff in our Tree & Shrub Nursery they would be happy to help or contact us at 303-690-4722 and ask to speak to our Nursery Department. Thank you!

Do you know that you can trim into shape a common pine or for that grows in abundance here in Colorado. Plant them close and trim it as they grow.

Great advice & videos. Just moved to Ridgway Co from AZ . What Perennials do you recommend that are deer & varmint resistant ? ? And can I plant them at the end of August to survive the winter ? ? Thx 😊

@TagawaGardens 3 года назад
Thanks for asking, here is a list from our website of plants that may be resistant to deer and rabbits www.tagawagardens.com/documents/2021_Deer_Rabbit_Resistant_Perennials.pdf We are in Zone 5 here in the Denver Metro area and end of August would be fine to plant in our area, as long as they are watered well when planted and watered about once a month during the winter. You might check with your local CSU Extension office, which would be Tri-River Area Extension for details on growing in Ridgeway, here is a link tra.extension.colostate.edu/gardening-hort/about-gardening/ Hope this is helpful!

Improve the soil. DONT use fertilizer or pesticide. Read Teaming with Microbes.

These advises are absolutely useless and even harmful. Dead already consumed by microbes compost does not improve soil its a bandaid on a huge wound. Large amount of organic matter and suffucient watering does. Using pesticides and herbicides even by following instructions is deadly for the soil! That should not be used in any garden! In fact it should ne outlawed and taken out of the stores! Tumbs down for this video, there are some wise words but they are lost in other nonsence.
