The Colorado River system is in the midst of a prolonged drought that threatens water, energy, and food supplies in the American West. Winter snow in 2023, has provided some relief to the system, but the cumulative impact of 20-plus years of water deficit means strategies to balance supply and demand pressures on the system are as critical today as they were yesterday. Dam management of the Colorado River system is no longer just moving volumes of water from the headwaters to the agricultural fields of southern California and Arizona. Now we add river and environmental health to the mix. This talk will highlight how science is changing the management of the entire socio-ecological system that is modern Colorado.
