I love how the brilliant colors of the bird's coat compare/contrast with the subtle (but still varied) colors of the branch. And the three-dimensionality of the head is especially lovely!

It is like a Japanese -style painting painted with mineral pigments and glue . It reminds me of the works of Uemura Atsushi (上村　敦之) which you can enjoy on youtube or the website . Please log on if you like .

I think it is a Painted Bunting from North America, so not exactly tropical.

Lena is there a tip for opening a stuck lid on a tube of gouache? I bought some Arteza gouache to practice with, and most of them opened easily but a couple of them are stuck shut and I have never used them. I suppose I could cut open the tube and squeeze what I can get into some sort of container, but wondered if there is a trick for opening them? I looked for a video on this but can’t find one. Help!😄

Hi Kana! When this happens to my oil paint tubes I dip the stuck lids into very hot water for a minute. The plastic of the lid becomes slightly softer because of the high temperature of the water and the lid opens easily. I have never had problems with opening my gouache tubes, but I think this method should work for them too. Try it and I would appreciate if you let me know if it has worked or not :)

When you make your pallet how much of the tube are you putting in each slot

When I fill my storage palette with colors, I only fill the wells two-thirds of the way full. It prevents the colors from bleeding from one well to another, which can happen if all the wells are full of paint.

It’s about 1/3 to a half of the tube.

One really has to learn how to anticipate how that gouache paint is going to dry. How do you do it, Lena? Do you have a method of how to do that?

Hi Tom! That's true. When greyed down, gouache colors can change their value significantly as they dry. To avoid making too many corrections I often times test the color I have mixed by making one brushstroke on the paper. It usually takes only a few seconds for that brushstroke to start drying and it makes it possible for me to decide if the value of the color is correct and I need to make it lighter.
