In the “special edition” Sharpie packs, there’s just 5 new colours usually (the packaging shows the 5 new colours), the rest are from their standard range. Papermate Flair do the same thing. All fine-tipped waterbased pens act the same way, that’s not unique to the Staedtler pens, it’s because you’re soaking the paper and then scratching it up. I’ve used them on Johanna Basford books and there’s no pilling of the paper. Paper is *everything* I sold both my Jane Davenport and Arteza brush pens on eBay because I realised I don’t like pens with real brush tips, too unpredictable. {Edit: all art tools have a learning curve and some even have specific uses in art or crafts so it’s worth checking out “how to use videos” for supplies you are struggling with. Not every art supply is suitable for colouring in colouring books}

I'm glad you fessed up on your regrets. I live on limited social security money and ANY art product mistakes I make cuts into my food budget or heating my house in the winter. Even items bought at a dollar store are too expensive if they don't work as expected. I hope you continue to show us your product failures/disappointments and successes as well. You're a fresh voice in the YTer coloring community. Best of luck. It's OK to ruffle some feathers.🎨♿👵Barb N.

The wink of stella pens you need to take off the black spacer completely and throw it away. It was there to prevent leaking in shipping. You must have pressed very hard to get it flowing... It was meant to never be put back on. You never have to squeeze that much at all. It will work like a regular water brush after that. Just glittery. For the Jane Davenport markers you need better paper, thicker watercolor paper or cardstock or bristol, or something coated like fingerpainting paper or a vellum and a much lighter technique. The colors will flow better and float above the paper if you coat your paper with gesso first. There is transparent gesso. If you want to color a large area you need to use a clear waterbrush or a regular brush and some water. Paper and surface treatment is more important than the supplies, especially if using midrange or trendy supplies. A better paper would make a huge difference in the watercolor set too Donate the supplies you don't like, or sell them on mercari or ebay. Those name brands get scooped up fast. I just got rid of a bunch of supplies that just don't work the way I work. Don't feel guilty, we all have different techniques in preferences. Good luck on your offloading and happy coloring journey.

I have the Jane Davenport paints also and don’t like the brushes. However, the colors are gorgeous and I want to use them. I squeeze some out on a palette and just use them like a liquid watercolor. Give that a try before you give them away. I totally agree about Arteza. I bought the set of 60 with refills awhile ago when I was new to coloring and didn’t know I only loved the glitter pens. So the set included neons, etc. I don’t like any of them, all scratchy and terrible flow. They are all in the trash including the refills. There are so many superior glitter pens out there at a fraction of what I paid for Arteza. Live and learn.

I’m wondering if the Staedtler pens were originally designed for writing and note taking and that’s why they are so scratchy? I tend to think everything pen and pencils related can be used for colouring books, but that isn’t necessarily what they were designed for 😁

And those glitter things that glitter everything down to the inside of your lungs....wow. Pretty, but you can't even give them away! (I had a bright blue loose powder eye shadow pot, which was going to be used as glitter on painting.....you know how a sneeze can catch you by surprise (as opposed to the sneezes that give you an hour's warning)....you see where this going. It was pretty to watch the air glitter such a pretty blue, but it was still glittering an hour later. Took hazmat suits (homemade) to wear when vacuuming it up. You can't give that glitter stuff away, but some things you can. (Diamond Stickles are clear so the undercolor shows through, but clear paint glitter would be easier to use.) Glad I didn't pay full price for any set because the fine tips did the same thing to the pages of many coloring books as you experienced. I don't use watercolor paper so I can't say how they might work on that. The Tombows are my big regret simply because I can't use them as much as I wanted to. Tombow is a good company, the markers come in beautiful colors and they are available open stock. I wonder if the problem is the tip or the paper. Hmmmmmm........

Lol - yep this is what hauls bring, things you feel you wasted money on. For me : Sharpies - I NEVER use these, ever...I just can not get into permanent markers, Gelly Rolls - I don't like them, how they lay down or anything. I like juice smeary gel pens and they are not that and I do not like the way their metallic or glitter pens look, Derwent Coloursoft - I thought they would be better than Prisma and I just can't get into them. Derwent Lightfast 24 - I like the pencils but the set of 24 was what I felt was the biggest rip-off. I expected a normal set of at least two colors of each major color and what I got was a bunch of browns and only a couple of analogous colors (lots of purples as I recall). Not exactly sure what I am supposed to color with all those browns -mud? Faber-Castell Gelatos - I had better expectations and I hate to admit this - Derwent Inktense - After 3 yrs I still can't figure these out, it is just plain hard. It's a user end issue, not a quality issue but it is so frustrating! Finally lots of budget pencils - they just aren't worth it when you can buy small sets of Prisma and Poly Chromos while you learn.

Hi! I have the full set of Jane Davenport´s brushes and do LOVE working with them. I would´t rate these as bad quality. Honestly, I consider them a really good product. The ink is very bright and the flow is great. I think it´s a matter of style. Maybe these brushes don´t fit the style you like to paint in. Of course, like with all art suplies, even good quality products can either perform great or terribly, depending on what you intend to use them for. I would not use these in my coloring pages, because they really are very juicy and a bit unpredictable, and that is what I love about them when I work in my own illustrations. They fit my personal style. It´s OK not to like them if they don´t work for you, but if you want to give them a chance, as others said below, practice a few techniques, research a few tutorials... I know it´s a shame to be dissapointed with art suplies you where happy about, so I just wanted to say that these brushes have a lot of potential.

With water based markers, you can't keep going over areas. The paper fibers swell and ultimately fall apart. If you want to be able to build up color (by repeatedly going back over it), you need to be able to print on watercolor paper. Good luck finding a reasonably priced printer that can print on thick paper. I haven't found a home printer in the $200 range that officially supports printing on thicker papers, according to the official specifications in the product manual. Most laser printers only officially support weighs up to 43 lbs. Inkjet are sometimes as low as 27 lbs weight. I've looked at the specifications on a few more expensive machines, as well, and they aren't much better. People do print on has paper with them, but it probably would effectively void the product warranty, should one require manufacturer support. Because one is using the machine to do things beyond product specifications, and really abusing the hardware. I don't have much money, so I cannot risk killing a printer and voiding warranty coverage, his because I want to color. I think Sharpie fills out those sets with older colors. I'm not sure you can always find complete smaller sets of new releases, without buying the older colors. Even the big collector's edition doesn't have every color of Sharpie that had ever been available. I use markers as a base for colored pencils. When I set out to color only with markers, my results are too flat and boring. My printer can't handle marker paper, so I color directly in books. The ink dries pretty fast, so I haven't played with blending effects. So I'm not a market expert. Coloring Bliss ha s covered quite a bit of Sharpie information, including that big set. Which set of Faber-Castell watercolor paints is that? Can you please provide a full name or link? Thank you. I'm thinking of ordering a custom Coloring Bliss coloring book on watercolor paper, if I get any holiday gift money. I really like the look of the F-C set You showed. I find your honesty refreshing.

Hello! A suggestion on using water-based markers (dual tips) in coloring: *pointillism*, that way you can avoid breaking down the paper while filling the space with colors. There are quite a few tutorials on YT. Also, you can't please everyone at the same time, and since this is your channel, your opinions rule. I just hope people can be respectful and agree to disagree--there is always the option to stop watching.

I find that watercolor brush pens are hard to use no matter the brand. I find using regular watercolor out of pans or tubes with a regular old school watercolor brush much easier to use, although not Arteza- go with either Schmincke, Sennelier or Daniel Smith (but word of warning, these are expensive professional grade). If you want to continue to use your watercolor brush pens maybe squirt the color onto a porcelain palette and use a normal brush maybe try watercolor paper instead of regular paper with it.

Great vid. I really do wish Sharpie would # or name all their pens/markers. As for the Staedtler, they are water-based. Any water-based marker/pen will do the exact same (pilling & paper breakage). I find the Staedtler best for finelining with alcohol markers as they won't smudge or used with papers built for watercolors.

The brush pens are meant to be used on watercolour paper I expected like you to just be able to use straight from the pen but that's not how they work Now when I use them I use a pallet to dispense the colour on that way I can dab off excess and pick up the amount I need and add water it other colour to mix the shades I want

I own many Stadtler markers. Water based can be tricky. I find when I use them on smooth paper and I use a light touch it seems to help. Can’t layer with them at all. I also have the Pablo’s. When used in combination with their ink tense pencils, they work wonderful with any paper. Finally Sharpies. I’m in agreement with those. I have multiple duplicates and rarely use them cause of the smell and contact high lol🌺

LOL Thanks for this video!!! I was laughing at the Jane Davenport waterbrush markers thinking, "Wow, so that is why I hate Jane Davenport art! She must be using these things!" When I worked at Michaels there was a time that Jane had her own section with her products. They ran out so fast and never seemed to come back in stock. I see why! I do use a powder palette of hers called Birthday Suit and it works well! LOL I would still use the markers tho, but I would put them onto plastic and dab them with a more reliable brush :)

I enjoy regret videos even if some of those regrets are supplies I have. I can take it! I’m interested in other people’s opinions, I just like them to be respectful. I ordered a small set of Pablos. I can’t wait. I have a small selection of luminance pencils and I save those for pictures that I want to color and possibly frame. The Pablos are going to be my go to alternative to prismacolor pencils. I did comment on your other video. I tried to be as objective and unemotional as possible. Peace. EDIT water based markers are going to pill the paper that’s why alcohol markers exist.

@@MoonSpinners thanks for the tip! I’m not upset at all. I’m heavy-handed and I’ve been looking for pencils that might let me achieve a translucent look in my coloring. I’m not a collector of pencils. I learnt early on that if I focus on something then I’m better off saving up and buying it rather than buying cheaper alternatives. The initial cost is more but in the end I save money, because I know myself so well. If I buy a cheaper alternative I will then buy another cheaper alternative, and in the long run would have spent more money than if I had saved and bought the product I originally wanted. Fortunately I don’t want a Porsche, Ferrari, or Lamborghini! 🤣

@MoonSpinners 2 года назад
@@shadowguard3578 ..😂 with the amount of pencils I’ve wasted my money on, I could easily have bought a house to match the Porsche and Lamborghini 😱 I like the Pablos, but for me, I always gravitate back to Fabre Castellated Polychromos. They’re the best coloured pencil for me. ( I do portraits of animals and people) They’re slightly harder than prismacolor, they sharpen well and keep their point, but are highly pigmented and the majority have a high lightfast rating. Pablos are also great for natural subjects, portraits and nature studies, you have to have a light touch with them though, and do loads of layers to achieve the desired strength of colour, but yes, they’re lovely for doing soft, translucent work. Just be gentle 😆😁
@shadowguard3578
@shadowguard3578 2 года назад
@@MoonSpinners I’m really appreciative of your advice, thank you! I will keep that in mind that when I use the Pablos I will need to use a light touch to achieve a translucent look. Talking of polychromos pencils…. a set of 24 plus 6 open stock are on my wish list 😊. The six open stock colors appear in the larger sets and I don’t have the need for the larger sets. Right now I have three open stock polychromos pencils and I’m impressed at how they keep a sharp point whilst coloring. Once I’ve bought the polychromos pencils, I’ll be done. Sorry about this second comment [I should have waited until I saw everything] but I have to respond to your Arteza pens set. I have no idea why your Artezas behaved in such a terrible way but I will say you are going out on a limb recommending the Sakura Gelly Rolls instead. If I were to write a review of the Sakuras that I purchased at Michael's I would say exactly what you say about your Artezas: dried out; hard to get started; pullls up the paper grain; bad coverage; and inconsistent color. It seems to me what we have both possibly experienced is the very low quality assurance standards that apply in the manufacturing world for these coloring supplies.

You don’t push down on the brushes, you’re not meant to put pressure on the brush, you use delicate mark making not just blocking in big spaces. I would suggest dispensing the ink onto a porcelain palette or some acetate and then pick up the ink from that and if you want to press down you can use a separate firmer brush. I’m thinking that you need to learn to loosen your grip when colouring and learn to glide over the paper and knowing when pressure is needed.
