This movie had " good " intentions- Dennis hopper wanted the story to be about the young men and women involved in the gang life but the studio basically forced him to make it a buddy cop movie- hero movie and took out the darker and sadder elements... hopper was pissed cause he wanted to show the background that makes younger people turn to gangbanging...
@@koDaffi The screenplay was about drug dealers in Chicago and Hopper wanted to make it about Crips and Bloods in LA because of how much they were getting in the news at that time.
@@robertthomas2601 Right but the movie isn't about Bloods and Crips. It's a buddy cop movie set in the hood. One of the most prevalent gangs in the movie is a latin gang.
@@koDaffi No, the director said in an interview he wanted it to be about Crips and Bloods. Dennis Hopper lived in Venice at this time and he was interested in the gang situation because it was close to his home.
0:51 David Ruffin(The Temptations Movie),Shep(Above The Rim),Little Richard(The Little Richard Story),& JT Matthews(The 5 Heartbeats)/Derice Bannock (Cool Runnings)aka Leon!!!
Rocket was an ex-pornstar and failed businessman He turned to drugs and was eventually out in the streets hanging with the wrong crowd Gangbanging wasnt what he saw in his future so he quit and cleaned himself up
Hodges is based on someone named Tony Moreno. He was the one who actually had the nickname Pac-Man, and he drove the yellow car. He was well liked by gang members, just like Hodges in the movie. He has a book. "Gang Cop". McGavin was based on Dennis Fanning. Fanning and Penn remained friends. Fanning attended Harry Dean Stanton's "celebration of life" with Penn, where the dress code was bare feet. Penn once tricked Fanning into attending an anti-police protest.
I think in this movie crip de ville was the set name even though it was filmed in 112 Broadway territory. They didnt use actual real set names bc 21st wasnt a real gang back then either. The blood set they shot at probably was from Denver Lane, Swan or possibly Athens Park or Miller Gangster......
Alot of gangs dont like ROOKIE cops is what it is. Hodges is liked because hes been there and knows hiw things are. Just like how sean penn is at the end of the movie. LAPD vets and gangs are still like this.
I remember rolling down in a slicktop on my first day like this, them fake gangsters looked at me like: "Who the F is this?" I could literally see my partner biting his lip. Now I see why he was laughing xD
Lots of confusion on here. The hood with the mural was BGC112. But they was from ECC in the movie if any gnag was represented, at least Roccet was. And so was the Xtras from ECC. You see 89 ECC hit up on the car chase. And Roccet yells Coast Crips when going to jail. Most of the gang signs are ECC signs as well.
The movie was based on Crips not Crip sets! Rocket didn't hollar Coast Crips he hollered ' what up Crips ' yo! Rockets character was based on the one and Only Raymond Washington creator of the Crips an original Eastside Crip (ECC)!!!!!
@@kano3030 True it was based on Crips, but we know East Coast was majority on set bro. They are my homeboys. And my homies got photos with the staff ANd he did not say no "What up Crips." You seem like an old timer. Get a Blueray player, with HD sound, them analog tv sound systems are horrible. There is no way in hell he said, what up Crips. It was a 1 syllable work, and what up is 2 words.
@@kano3030 Go re watch it bro. What you mentioned was afterwards. I just pulled the movie up. He says it at 11:24. You must have just got out. We got this thing called Amazon Prime, where you can pull up movies now and watch them in real time. 89ines were on the set bro.
This was the hardcore gangs. I remember the sub culture of Stoner, Punk, Skate, skinhead Gangs aswell. Back in the early days , the suicidal tendencies gang (suis), would fight with FFF(Nazis) Khaos13(cholo punks) , Bay area skins, The Bash Boys, Skate Punk locos, L.A.D.S.(Los Angeles Death Squad) Sacred Rites, (SRs) oh yeah the Drunx which spawned a sub group called Wino's..( basically 10 black and 1 white dude who drank all day and hit up walls) Crips, Bloods, White Fence, 2 weak ass gangs Death City Kings (DCK), Kings of Drag(KOD) , North Hollywood Boyz, Westside Criminals, ST they were one of the first ever cholo punk bands that really was a gang . Then they had a Samoan faction called Samoan suicidals that were just brutal street fighters. They would just TEAR Up a slam pit. Or mosh pit? which later the kids re named Basically, the Suicidal Tendencies gang was in the same family as Venice 13, Venice White Boys, Venice Jokers, Rimpest, Dogtown Skaters, and other sets. On a weird side note. CHAOS became KAOS (K-13) formed a girls group Called Westside Dolls. One of the homegirls recruits was Dean Martin's Granddaughter . Also, on a even stranger note that guy that used to play Bud Bundy on married With children and that other white boy that used to be on the show Parker Lewis can't lose form their own little WANNABE crew called the Gumby's which were involved in some murder or something like that? Each one of these crews spawned like a dozen others.
idk what crip deville is but there were suppose to be from broadway gangsta crip 115st its hit up all on the walls behind him , that gang still exsist to this day and is quite brutal
hell nah they not form fudge! they from broadway in the movie trust me!!! 52 bgc east side my dude..its several real gangs in the movie broadway, the jungles (bps), frog town 13, white fence 13, and a few others roccet was from bgc in the movie lol trust me..fudge town is watts homie plus they rocc brown
@@Enhancedhustlers He yells, "COAST CRIP" When wa;king through jail. You didnt see all the ECC hands signs. And J Bone from 89 ECC was in the car with Roccet. 89 ECC is hit up multiple times during the car chase.

That’s a good question. Bc they on they main and imperial that’s bgc hood. But I think rocket from ecc. Bc when he went to the county he said “coast crip” plus a lot of this movie take place on the east side so it would make sense. Idk tho
slyguy10 Had to be. I was going to say it could be Central ave. heading toward the 105, which is also in Watts, where a lot of Colors was filmed, but I don't think that stretch of the 105 opened until the early '90s.
moonrunrs South Central was no joke in those days. Must have been a challenge for them to film. Some of the extras were shot during the time they were filming. Late '80s was pure war on those streets.
that corner is main st. and 113th in 112th Broadway Gangster Crip hood. That mural is no longer there. The owners of the auto shop painted over it. Also the area is full of Mexicans now.
