Oh, I also really appreciated how you pointed out the yellow staining from the PY150 in the Mission Gold swatch. That is a PERFECT example of why a multi-pigment paint can sometimes be problematic. Much more accurate than just saying “multi-pigments mix muddy colors.” Well done!

Hello Oto - wow that example of the better watercolor paper is shocking. The difference is significant! I love your channel, your voice, your calm demeanor, and your honesty. I greatly appreciate that you are so generous with your time, energy, creativity, and experience! Also tickled that you crochet too! Hugs from New Orleans!

I expected a difference with papers but i really appreciate seeing it " in the flesh". Always looking for paper differences any more in that it seems to be the most important to the outcome ,,,beyond paints or brushes.

I love seeing the swatches on both types of paper. The difference is astounding in the degree at which it shows so much more how different the paints are. I would love to see the same thing in future comparisons.

Thank you Oto. I like the more transparent and orange color in my burnt sienna. That is why I haven't changed from the Cotman one. 😊💜

@benspeeds 3 года назад
Transparent Red Iron Oxide is a transparent Earthy orange brown that is an affordable option offered by several high end paint brands. It's possible that it's the pigment used in cottman burnt sienna. Not sure about that though.

Winser & Newton, even though it’s actually a synthetic red iron oxide being PR101, is my favorite because it’s so transparent, I can glaze and layer it until I reach the actual mass-tone of the dried pigment in the pan. So deep dark and beautiful. The potential value of a pigment is measured by how dark the mass-tone looks when dry. For my real Burnt Sienna, I prefer Holbein. Love your videos and what you share Oto. Love ya!

Your videos are the absolute BEST comparison ones on RU-vid. Subscribed! 😁😁Thank you for taking the time to do this for our benefit. I'm a big W&N fan, but their earth tones are not up to par. However, I find I can mix a wonderful burnt sienna with Venetian Red and Cadmium Yellow. It's opaque, but perfect for my style of working.

Yay! Burnt Sienna! Not my favorite color but sure is nice for painting animals. I have Daniel Smith, Da Vinci , m Graham, and Mai Meri blu. Daniel Smith is my favorite because it’s a little pink. Now I’m interested to see how Qor does next week, it glazes so perfectly here! I’m eyeing that one, Thank you so much for doing the comparison!

Those beginning swatch comparisons is a very good marker of why I recommend upgrading paper before anything else. Regardless of which hue you enjoy, they all look so much nicer. As for the burnt siennas, I use a lotttt of this color in wildlife paintings so here are a few of my thoughts. Mission Gold is pretty on its own but an abomination for mixing, and I don't like the textural properties of QoRs in actual paintings. I prefer PBr7s for this color slot on my palette (leaving PR101s to either the transparent oxide or opaque indian red-like colors, and I usually have two or all three on a palette). No matter how many I try, I have always gone back to Daniel Smith's softly granulating and pinkish-brown hue. That being said, I'm not sure what I'll be doing after I run out of my current tube given all the recent drama. Da Vinci's is the closest I've tried, so I'll probably move in that direction, though I have a few new versions on order (including one from Roman Szmal) to see if I can find another that is closer. Thanks so much for sharing this while I'm on this new quest, Oto!

i’ve painted extensively with Sennelier’s version and it was not granulating and was much lighter than DS’s. i remember feeling like DS’s burnt sienna felt almost like a burnt umber compared to the Sennelier’s burnt sienna i was using. maybe either Senn or DS or maybe both have changed their formulations since then. very interesting, thank you for sharing!

This has to be perfect timing. I have a mummy red bauxite by roman szmal that I love but want a tube version of bt sienna for skin tones and a travel palette. My love of granulation makes Sennelier so appealing. But granulating skintones is not my jam so maybe qor instead. Looking forward to next week to see rests of the tests!

It baffles me how she missed such a good brand when brands of questionable credibility (mission) and limited availability (Szmall, QOR, Meimeri) have a permanent spot. I am using Rembrandt as my base and when it comes to transparency, it blows other brands out of the window. It's downside is using some of the older formulations, unconventional naming (worst compared to others) and uniformity of behaviour (it can be a problem for those who prefer traditional paints)

for Mijello burnt sienna, i read somewhere someone try to mix it with ultramarine blue to get grey color, it turned greenish grey instead, py150 in it must be the culprit. my Mijello burnt sienna no.2 is made from pr102. Mijello also has another burnt sienna, named as "dark burnt sienna" that use pbr7.

I love to come back to these swatches, when I am looking for something special. If and what to add to a small essential selection to a set of a special brands for a specific purpose, like expressionist florals and such. Still, then I stuck and look up all the colours usually included in a starter 12 p. set or similar sets. The more I watch these, the more I am a bit sorry, that the rembrandt talens are not included. because my baisc set in general use, consists to 2/3 of schmincke h. and 1/3 rembrandt. and I must say, I like the few rembrandts I have. In my opinion burnt sienna should be made of PBR7, not PR 101, let alone those bizarre multi pigment mixes (three pigments MissionGold, to mix a color for which a perfectly fine cheap pigment is available. Really?). I really dislike the lack of consistency in naming colors between brands.

the burnt sienna by schmincke as mixing colour with other easy to lift colours, is actually not that staning. very easy to use actually. I hardly use it pure, and I don't remember, I ever had to lift it. that is maybe, why I find them to be easy going. actually great to use and I love it in mixes to create grays. they always come out lovely. I remember, the first time I watched this, I was a bit irritated, that I made a good decision, having baught that. because you also made the note, it is harder to rewet. and it is true, but not 'that' hard. and now, that I worked with it for a year, I can say, I don't pay much attention. because I learned to handl the different textures or different paints. the moment, something is a tiny bit stiffer, I eiter wait a few seconds or use a different brush. but It may be worth mentioning - if a paint is hard to re-wet or use. because I struggle sometimes with some special transparent paints, that tend to seperate. when I have to stir them with a needle in the tube, so the binder doesn't run out. these - I find sometimes hard to mix up smoothly. alternatives for those, I would take anytime :-)

The performance of the paint was obviously affected by the poor quality paper. You can't expect to test colors accurately without giving them something they can work with properly.
