Daniel Smith's green gold was on my first professional palette and I came to love those brown mixes with the reds. It took me much longer to come around to PY129, but I have room in my heart for both now 😆

I have W&N Green Gold and I really, really love it. I use it for all sorts of things, but mostly I think it's just a straight up star in skin tone mixes, where it brings amazing glow imo. Also, that DS Green Gold has been calling to me since the first time I saw it, it very much looks like it would be my jam. Thank you for the walkthrough, Oto, these are always so helpful!

I absolutely love these comparison and am happy every time a new one shows up and often go back to earlier showdowns when I'm setting up a new palette. I love using DS Green Gold (which by the way was originally made from PG10, an obsolete pigment that was also commonly called Green Gold), it mixes beautifully as you demonstrated, glows on its own and is pretty versatile for a green mix. However, while I understand the name rules that you stated, I'm not sure how Azo Green, Greenish Yellow, Golden Green and Brown Green (none of which are called Green Gold) are acceptable but then Rich Green Gold isn't included because it doesn't fit the rule. To be consistent with the rule, it seems that you'd have to invalidate those outlier color names considering that the color name is more important than the pigments in this comparison. It didn't stop me one bit from enjoying this episode as I'm looking at buying a PY129 green gold and even the other mixes are interesting, but it's confusing.
@franninchen
@franninchen 3 года назад
I totally have to agree your whole comment. Maybe it would have been better to include both DS paints, as they are both called green gold as rich green gold would have totally fit the name rule in that case. Now I am still not sure if I should buy rich green gold or green gold by another brand. The green gold by DS I already own and love it. 😅

Re bubbles - the only time I ever get this with any paint is when rubbing at the dried paint to rewet it. Let a drop of water sit on top of the pan for a minute before digging in and the problem should disappear as you won't be rubbing and forcing air in.
@hannahthufvesson

I feel like I want to mention that that might not help. I've tried to do that a ton with a maimeri paint I have, and it's just hopeless. Cannot. Get. Rid. Of. The. Bubbles. 😭 Oh well, there are other brands out there..

I have lots of Maimeri (tubes and pans) and just don't experience it at all. I have often wondered whether water hardness may also affect our painting experience though, do you know how your tap water is? Mine very soft.

@hannahthufvesson 3 года назад
@@MissMagic Same here, soft water in Stockholm. :) I have a few MaimeriBlu pans that don't bubble as terribly, but they are sort of "unfriendly" to rewet? As if they're hard and tacky at the same time. I've never experienced anything like that before. I want to love them, but I just can't. I've given up on them as a brand.
@MissMagic
@MissMagic 3 года назад
I wonder what can cause such difference in experience then, how very odd. Maybe there is some manufacturing variation or like with M Graham they are affected by something environmental. M Graham paints set here no problem and stay that way btw.
@hannahthufvesson
@hannahthufvesson 3 года назад
@@MissMagic Me too, and possibly. I guess pigments are a bit of a wild card and batches will vary slightly, regardless of environmental factors? It's such a jungle! And I love M. Graham! They set here enough to stay put in a travel palette, but stay very soft and creamy, which I'm practicing getting used to. I love their color payoff and how matt they dry! 😍

I use green-gold for the bright "sunset/sunrise" look behind a forest so I like my green-gold to be on the bright side. Thank you for sticking to your "color name" premise for this series. I for one really appreciate it and am finding it interesting that the art paint industry can sometimes be just as inconsistent as the house paint industry. Generally this green-gold color isn't one of my favorites, but that Schminke just jumped off the swatch card at me!

I have the QoR green gold, as it’s part of the high chroma set, it’s lovely, as are the other colours in the set! Works great wet in wet, it has the typical QoR “whoosh” when you drop it onto wet paper.

Wow, had been eyeing PY129 for weeks and I JUST got back with a new tube from my art supplies store and your video pops up!! I ended up buying Shinhan PWC's Greenish Yellow (PY129). It is sketchy that the label says lightfastness is only 2 out of 3 stars, seeing as every other manufacturer puts it at their top rank, but I've come to learn that with Shinhan, the ratings on the labels (and even the use of the word "permanent") don't mean much. Seeing the performance of the other options, I am still happy with it. It is a lovely hue, more greenish than yellow. If my monitor were perfect, I would say it's closer to the Mission Gold hue. Thank you for this episode, I am looking for ward for next week's!

Love QOR's one. Their high chroma set has no duds, every hue is incredibly useful! Daniel Smith's Rich Green Gold feels very different, even though hue comes close - it feels heavier and muddier. QOR has amazing luminosity that sometimes substitutes a cool yellow in my mini palettes

The justification for using Green Gold rather than Rich Green Gold doesn't really make sense, in that she only wanted to use the colors called Green Gold to help beginners avoid mistakes, because half the colors she used are not named Green Gold. If you're only going to show the wrong DS Green Gold you won't help beginners find the right DS Rich Green Gold if you don't show it.

wow! the only green gold i know is DS, so getting ready to order my first roman szmal paints i would have been very surprised not to receive a chartreusey yellowish green! thank you for doing this comparison. i had no idea the ds was actually the outlier and not the norm (at least in this situation). You have M. Graham's PY129 listed as "Azo Gold." It is actually called "Azo Green," hence you really didn't stick to color names instead of pigment numbers as many of your other choices didn't have the exact name either. Also, as you mention in your video Daniel Smith's "Rich Green Gold" is a PY129 and closer in hue (instead of DS Green Gold) to your other choices and the name isn't so different as Schmincke's Transparent Green Gold or Holbein's Yellowish Green. I love your videos and have watched them all, but sometimes your choices perplex me.
