Colouring Tutorial: Using Light and Choosing Colours for Dynamic Results!

A two stage tutorial discussing different ways to colour with coloured pencils and a colouring demonstration using Kerby Rosanes' book Animorphia and CHEAP student grade pencils to show you that you can get great results with colouring even if you are on a budget. I explain how I choose colours and play with leaving white spaces to create easy lighting effects. I demonstrate how I go about choosing colours and why it's a great idea to experiment with different colours to create interesting shading effects to make your pages pop.
Book use: Animorphia by Kerby Rosanes This is such a FUN book to colour!
Pencils: Micador ColouRush and Fun Stuff. These pencils, to the best of my knowledge, are not available outside of Australia. But you can create exactly the same results using other budget brands such as Faber Castell Classics, Crayola, Marco Raffine, Colleens etc. So whatever you've got grab them, pour a cup of tea, open a book and colour along with me.
I'd love a pack of Colleens but they don't sell them in Aus.
If you enjoyed this video please give me a thumbs up.
For more colouring content you can head over to my colouring blog at:
www.la-artistino.com
And please consider supporting my channel by signing up with my Patron account. Every little bit helps and I will be so very grateful. currently saving for better lighting as I am presently restricted to filming on bright, sunny afternoons... that's going to be a problem when Winter kicks in.

Peta, I have watched this tutorial several times now and I am finding it to be one of the best art tutorials ever. Your instruction on use of the color wheel, shading, reflected light, technique and order of laying down and blending pencils.... All wonderful! I would love to see a video on reflected light colors. And I would love to see a tutorial on how to create cast shadows, particularly how to figure out what shape they should be. Thank you again for this and all your wonderful tutorials.

Peta, I absolutely love your demonstrations, all of them. Coloring book walk throughs and critiques, speed coloring demos, and especially your real time demos and explanations of you pick your colors and how you actually color. I was very excited to see the real time demos as I was slowing down the speed coloring demos to better see what you were doing. You are very inspirational and a wonderful teacher, I have learned sooooo much from watching you. I would love to see your color swatch books in a little more detail. Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU!!!!!

Thank you so much for all of the tutorials you did for us! I have learned so much from you over the last year. As a result, my coloring has improved greatly. I have been coloring for as long as I can remember and never did I ever think of these techniques! The aqua brush is so fun and effective to work with. You are so blessed with creativity and talent. It is so kind of you to take the time to teach us fellow colorists these wonderful and unique techniques. I can watch you color for hours - and sometimes I do! I am 52, divorced, and disabled with multiple sclerosis so practicing coloring is quite good for my cognitive skills! Thank you so much! Thankfully I am able to get around and still enjoy myself with my coloring!

Colouring in an excellent way to keep exercising your fine motor skills. I'm a 50 year old RN so although I have been very fortunate with my health I've spent my life working with people that haven't been quite so lucky. Thank you for the praise, very much appreciated.

Lori Anne I am disabled with MS also and like you - I find PETA's tutorials exceptional and so informative- I don't have to be "an artist" to create - I love creative endeavors and applying many techniques to the best of my abilities. I find coloring one of the only things right now that makes me feel whole and I've had MS since I was 17 and I will be 54 next week - I love color and I am not ever going to create one of those fantastic masterpieces you see all over Instagram and Facebook but I am who I am and I do what I can do and as Peta says to us "Happy Coloring" and best wishes to you and your health ❤️ many thanks Peta for another informative tutorial ❤️✍🏻😊

What a wonderful tutorial! I love how you describe your beautiful artistic process. Thank you for talking about the colour wheel and how to use it properly. I also loved tht you used a test sheet to see how the gradient would flow. Thank you for talking in your video. So many artists on RU-vid just play music and don't speak about what they are doing and it can be frustrating. Also, I enjoyed the way you controlled the music in the background so it didn't drown you out.

I really wish I'd have your talent concerning where to put the shade. This is my biggest problem in coloring and so my results sometimes are not very satisfying to me. I really love your tutorials, they helped me A LOT, so that coloring is now a real passion for me. Maybe you could do a tutorial for where to put the shades in different objects and with different versions concerning where the light is coming from. That would help me a lot because I think you are the absolutely best teacher. Much love from Austria!

Greetings from the UK! Thank you for such wonderful demonstrations, tips, tricks and techniques Peta. Ever since I was a child, I have always loved to colour in. I have recently taken it up again and am quickly becoming obsessed. I particularly like the Querkles series of colouring books, and am now 'tackling' the Where's Wally colouring book. Relaxing, therapeutic, mindful, creative and rewarding are how I would describe sitting down for a few hours in front of a colouring book. Many thanks again Peta and I have subscribed to your channel. I look forward to more videos. Regards, Chris x.

I would like to echo the thanks to you! I'm also an RN...68, retired but still working. You have taught me so much. I can't believe the improvement I can already see in my pictures. I only have one complaint...all the colouring books for adults have far too many finely detailed pictures for us oldies, whose eyes are no longer so good. Also, I personally prefer a picture, not geometric shapes. Would love to colour eg. cottages, gardens, landscapes etc.

Your work is beautiful, Peta. Thanks for the tutorial, Peta. Helps tremendously. The plants (?) at 15:30 look like Bull rushes or "cat tails". They're usually found in swampy areas here in Canada (in the US too?) around mid-Summer to late Fall and are usually brown and/or grey. I like what you did with them though.

I was going to say that as well, but I realized this was posted 3 years ago, and Peta hasn't made videos for awhile 😥. Native Americans used this to make fire as well. The head makes a great firestarter and the stem can be twirled into another section of stem and a bit of something rough (sand) to create fire. It works great!

Really a wonderful video ... ! I was thinking about this subject over the past few days and oddly this popped up in my feed.. Anyway.. the reason i was thinking about it was that After years of wishing I could afford the "really good pencils" I finally had saved enough .. and the deal that was not to be passed up presented itself.. Both on the 150 set of prismas and 120 set of polychromos .. So......... snapped them up.. Now, for many.. MANY years I have used what I had .. a 24 ct set of crayola colored pencils.. And as I have used them, practiced with them.. learned all the ins and outs.. what they can and can't do.. I have been able to achieve some really lovely results .. Then, when i tried the new pencils, it was almost like using a different medium all together .. There IS a learning curve when you switch brands ... I have been practicing tho .. and having some good results.. I guess what I am taking WAY too long to say is this.. I hope people will not think the only way to get really wonderful end product is to use the expensive colored pencils .. buy a set of what you can afford.. then practice... practice.. practice.. You will need to do this anyway with an expensive pencil.. Good Luck.. Have fun.. to all who embark on this rewarding art adventure.. and Peta .... Thank you for this awesome video .. giving encouragement to those who may not have the resources to afford the really expensive pencils..

+Quilter Caroline H The staedtler Norris Club pencils are more difficult to work with. Sadly they do not have as much pigment as most student quality... or even good kids quality pencils have. I don't know why. I don't like using them. But if you have nothing else then they are worth a try. (Staedtler Ergo soft are better but are expensive for what they are... I'd prefer to use my Micador ColouRush pencils.)

Guess it's too late to comment now, but the tufts of 'flowers' that hover above the grass are cattails. They are usually brown until the seeds break down and fly away looking like cottony-gray pinwheels.
