The change in his voice is intentional. Colter recently said in an interview that his new sound is due to the fact that he learned how to actually sing. He says when he started he was "growling into a microphone" and how he wanted to become a better vocalist. There are a few things which strike me as an older American listener that might not be in your frame of reference. First, Colter's second-register singing is a direct call-back to "The Cattle Call," written by Tex Owens in 1934 and made famous by the American singer Eddy Arnold in 1944. In the days of American cattle trail drives (second half of the 1800s), cowboys on night-watch would sing to the cattle as they rode around the bedded-down herd. This helped prevent the cattle from being startled into stampede by sudden, unexpected noises. A cowboy who had a natural second register might well choose to use it as the higher pitch would help mask other noise. Second, the song's subject matter is very much in the vein of pre-radio "cowboy" songs. _Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads_ by John A. Lomax (1910) contains many lyrics which share themes with this one. (The book is in the public domain, and available for download.)

This is generally speaking his style now. How he sings and uses his voice like this is very prominent in his last couple of projects now. Devil Wears A Suit And Tie was a long time ago for him in comparison to this video. Also a side note: he didn’t write this song. This song is much older than him hence the classical sound. This is just his take at it which has brought this tune back in the spotlight a little bit.

This man has so much soul in his songs. Musical artists can certainly improve on their technical skills as they gain more experience throughout their careers, but the soul is authentic and perhaps cannot be taught.

Cowpoke isn't a Colter Wall original, it's an old cowboy tune. The original being by Eddy Arnold I believe. Some of his album Western Swing & Waltzes that this song is on is covers like this. Big Iron (Marty Robbins, made more famous by the man in black) is also on the album. I don't mean to discount this performance, because Colter Wall does an incredible job. Additionally, this whole album is in this style (as opposed to his Imaginary Appalachia album).

If you get a chance definitely do a reaction to Colter Wall and Tyler Childers singing Fraulein. Absolutely beautiful song with an interesting comparison of two distinct voices that work well together.

He was actually embarrassed by those older performances since he was only 19 at the time and had no clue what he was doing that’s why it sounds so different he was practicing and mastering his craft

Sleeping on The Blacktop is kind of like a middle ground between this and TDWST - its got the basier notes and is very much more of a production but I think that it also shows a little more versatility

I love that you brought this up. His earlier stuff (while I enjoy it) sounded like he was forcing that sound too much, and now he sings in a much more natural tone that I really enjoy. It's interesting to hear his take on his own voice. He says he cringes listening to earlier recordings.

You got to listen to Bob Fudge ( live at backpasture version ). Story of an old cowboy herding cattle across America and the hardships they encountered . Love Colter Wall's stuff.

This is western music. My father (born in 1915) grew up on a cattle ranch and they sang these old songs. He used to grab his guitar and sing these songs to me when I was young. 🥰

Cowpoke has long been one of my favorite songs! I first heard Cowpoke sung by Johnny Western and immediately fell in love with the song. I got chills when I heard Colter Wall sing it! I truly believe that his rendition of the song is the best I have ever heard and fits the personality of the song amazingly well!

This is actually a cover, it was was originally done in the 50’s by, I believe it was Eddy Arnold, so you’re statement about it having a more classical feel to it is spot on.

Hi, thanks for the reaction and breakdown! Colter Wall's one of the few modern country singers I enjoy, and its always a pleasure seeing others discover him. If you're looking for more singers to discover I'd highly recommend Greg Pucciato. He's mostly known for harsh vocals, but he's got incredible range and is a blast to watch live. One of Us Is the Killer would be a great choice.

I really hope you listen to Colter’s song “Bob Fudge” soon! It’s a story that just blossoms in your imagination as he sings.

As a 6 string picker myself. Playing and singing is extremely difficult. It definitely feels like you are unlocking another part of your brain as you start to do them both at once.

The technique of telling the story reminds me of the country music from the 1950 to 1970's

Colter was discovered several years ago by Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle at a singer/songwriter event. They raved about his talent and authenticity.

If I remember correctly, I believe there's approx 5 years difference from The Devil Wears A Suit and Tie in 2015ish and Cowpoke was released in July 2020. So great pickup that his vocals have progressed in between. A lot of progression can happen in 5 years.

Colter Wall has quite the range, as you said, putting both songs side by side is no guarantee that it would be connected. As some said,Bob Fudge and Big Iron are good.Frauline , Saskatchewan in 1885, Kate McCannon. Ect. I also like Happy Reunion. Really really enjoy where it’s just him and his guitar. DWST live performance was, in my opinion, a time when he just had some vocal cords damage but went on and recorded the session anyway and it resulted in a deeply impressive vocal coloring which does not reappear when his voice is back to normal.

One of the songs that always impressed me vocally was boston, more than a feeling. Granted Brad had many vocal tracks overlapping on the album it was still impressive, especially the end of the second verse where he says "i closed my eyes and she slipped away" and he really shows his range.

Favorite song by colter wall is "Bob fudge." He voice isn't as diverse but the story telling is genuine and the way he sings it is from the heart. In music singing with purpose is as good as singing with pure talent.

You should definitely look into either Shawn James - “That’s life” (cover) Or Tyler Childers - “Hard Times” or “Nose on the grindstones” They’re both amazing blues/country singers with amazing voices and live videos.

You couldn’t possibly get the joke between the prairie states/provinces. We are identical to outsiders except ourselves. The joke was “Northern Montana” meaning you are American despite the border. The other direction is “South da Canada” for North Dakota or “Monitana” for Montana. In the Anglosphere, I imagine it would be like the fact that Americans can’t tell the Difference between SA, NZ and Australians.

Sleeping on the blacktop is a nice combo of both styles.

Colter was a teenager during those brewery sessions, where you reviewed DWST, and he has evolved since then. In fact, he detest those sessions, even though fans love them. He said he cringes when he hears his voice from 2015, date of the brewery sessions. Anyway, I hope he doesn't lose all that grit, I appreciated the uniqueness of it. He has many great songs from 2015 brewery sessions, but they are in the same range as DWST. You should still listen to them, his story telling is jarring, and unforgettable in them. Cowpoke is an old song by the way, not written by Wall, but written in the 1950's.

Had to figure out how to mute the online seminar I'm attending currently to watch this :) I don't really care about how proficient somebody is at singing if I enjoy listening to them. I enjoy listening to Colter Wall a lot :) His voice carries me somewhere to the Rocky Mountains or something :D

I’ve been listening to colter for many yrs now and I have seen him grow and mature in his playing and most importantly his story telling. Don’t get me wrong I love his voice is crazy good but I absolutely love his story telling. If you want to be impressed with songs of his that have incredible stories listen to “transcendent ramblin railroad blues” and “Saskatchewan in 1881”, the former I believe to be one of the greatest songs written from my generation and I think it will be his ticket to the rock and roll hall of fame!

He has definitely developed his voice since that album came out. He sounds great either way, but if you listen to Imaginary Appalachia, then continue listening to the rest of his stuff in the order it was released you can tell a huge gradual improvement in his voice and range.

This is the type of music that listen to while I’m working on the family ranch. It’s great.

Julia, I think you should check out a band called Lovebites. The singer (as are the whole band) is Japanese, but sings in English. They play what most reaction channels refer to as power metal (think Iron Maiden), but their output ranges from all out thrash to rock ballad. I would suggest the official version of “The Crusade” and “Epilogue” from their Zepp Diver City Tokyo 2019 concert to see how good she is. Check back here if you’re interested. This band is going to explode after the pandemic.

The devil wears the suit and tie was done in 2015, cowpoke was done in 2020. But the guys makes me even more proud of my home province of Saskatchewan. Little fact this guy’s dad was the Premier of Saskatchewan. (In my opinion on of the best we’ve ever had)

I really like how he almost sounds like he’s culning, which is an ancient form of singing to call cattle, especially since this is a song about a working cowboy. Very cool.

I like his singing style in this one and his newer material. In DWST, he was still finding his voice, and the strain he was putting on it always sounded a little unnatural to me. It's to be expected though, when you have an incredibly unique voice it takes a lot longer to find what works because you have nothing to reference it against.

So I love his whole discography because the first album is like a devil with a suit in tie low and gritty. The self titled debut album colter wall signs even lower and dark and more at the bottom of the throat. Then this album that cowpoke is off of western waltzes and other punchy songs he sings with that more tang and high up in his voice

I don’t know if you have, and I know this is a year later. But you should listen to Codeine Dream by Colter Wall. I suggest dimming the lights. It’s a very somber sounding song and makes me think of driving through the desert as the sun is about to set.

The song is already based on an existing story. It's an ode to Robert Johnson, the famous blues man who people accused of selling his soul to the devil.

You might check out Wall’s version of Big Iron for the classic storytelling country music song. His delivery brings something the Mart Robbins version lacked. As an aside, Coulter Wall gives me serious old school Chris LeDoux vibes. Chris LeDoux was a rodeo cowboy who made and sold cassette tapes of his rodeo songs while riding the rodeo circuit many, many years before CDs and RU-vid could make a person popular. If you get a chance, check out some of his music, maybe his version of “Amarillo by Morning” which he released in (I think) 1975.
