Back in 76 I used to hop on at Loma Linda and ride to Colton and then back. Loved those days when I was 12. Met many a bum back then.

The rail workers I talked to onsite said they were not allowed to comment, understandably. I couldn't find any news on the Federal Railroad Administration website, but they are investigating. It was interesting to find out that San Bernardino County has a far higher number of these incidents than the rest of the nation. Not sure if that reflects some sort of negligence, or if it's just a reflection of the volume of freight that passes through SB County. It is the largest county in the country, and it's close to our biggest ports, so I have a feeling the higher number is just due to higher volume. If I ever do find a report on the causes I'll be sure to post a comment.

@@SoCalCreature apparently this is the biggest rail bottleneck in the nation too. hard to get new land rights to fix this especially in the hate-capitalism-state.

It's going to take a few months for an investigation. The NTSB should come out with a preliminary finding of what they believe to have happened within a few weeks on the cause, but the final report / cause could take months...

There weren't enough brakes hooked up thus the remote controlled locos were pushed downgrade over a derail. The derail worked well

Nice video. Contractors will be along soon to recover the lumber so it would be unwise to roll down there thinking you can just load up your truck and go.

Ah good. Someone on site said it was all going to the landfill and just lumping it in with the insurance claim. 90% of it did look salvageable.

@@SoCalCreature I don't know where it will end up, it's just not free to the public. There are numerous companies who specialize in recovering damaged freight for the railroads. It's not often that such efforts are well documented so you may want to keep an eye on the situation, if only out of curiosity.

After I published this I saw some aerial footage taken on the day of the accident, before everything got moved around the site. You can see that the engine with the most damage was the 3rd in line, and that the car that had the end ripped off was the one attached to that engine and that smashed into the side of the engine. I also notice that two of the cars had hit the columns supporting the fly over, which I didn't notice when I was on site. It's pretty lucky that this didn't mess up those columns and shut down the flyover. That was an expensive project.

At the time I was there it had been 25 hours since the derailment. I talked to someone who lived there and they said the clean up crew had been there all night. So it would have been difficult. Other than the scrap pile on the sidewalk it was almost all still bundled, so you pretty much need a forklift. I don't think anybody would be able to get more than a few dozen pieces if they were doing it by hand.
@dalejones3532
@dalejones3532 2 года назад
Wow how much lumber was on that train anyway.
@SoCalCreature
@SoCalCreature 2 года назад
From what I could see it looked like all of the freight cars were carrying lumber. So it was a lot. Most of it looked like it was still secured in the cars and still bundled so it wouldn't be too difficult to forklift.

I couldn't tell you. I don't have any idea what the chances of repairing one of those are. I'm guessing that the engine that looked like a parallegram is beyond repair though.

"Engine cars"?!?!?!?!?!?!?!..............🤔 I wouldn't suggest taking any of that lumber even though it would be a insurance write off, it's still owned by someone or something. That would be theft. If the lumber companies / brokers that were moving that lumber were any kind of smart, they'd sell it as-is for pennies on the dollar. Nice close up shots of the derailment though!!!

Engines are not also cars? Whoops. haha. I thought units was synonymous cars. In that case, what is the term for mixed units where the power unit carries payload, like a Metrolink power/passenger unit? Glad you like the close ups.
