Robbie Coltrane reviews the history of the jet engine from its beginnings during World War 2 through to the development of the afterburner, and today's huge civil airliners. After flying in a Gloster Meteor Coltrane checks out the design features and maintenance of turbojets.

A beautifully crafted programme with pan appeal, not just for aviation geeks. Presentation was perfection.

I love the way many people say the jet engine is so simple... In concept it is brilliantly simple, and I love them! I build them for a living, and any jet engine definitely contains more parts than any piston engine. More moving parts even. If you want to see what's inside them, take a look at some of my vids. Still, I am having trouble deciding which plane is the sexiest of all time... the F86, or the F100...

Machining cylinders and flat surfaces in a home workshop may not be easy but fabricating compressors and high temperature turbines is a different world to play in before you get to the question of cost. Perhaps the difference between suck, squeeze, bang, blow and the jet is a dream that is within one's grasp and one that is not. Still does not alter the Coltraine view or that the world is now a poorer place without him.

I would say the reason people do not have a relationship with the jet engine as they do with a piston engine is because most men mechanically inclined have messed with a piston engine and can recognize it in any situation

The pilot at the end, is that possibly Frank Whittles son? Wasn't he a airline pilot?

@cj54car They certainly did, as exemplified in the work of Von Ohain at Heinkel and the Junkers Jumo 004 turbojet, however Frank Whittle was the first to actually patent the jet engine design.

and his reheater system actually predates the US system. however by this time the UK had thrown whittle under the bus and he left for america.

As an avid RU-vid surfer I see a lot of folks bashing the United States for supposedly teaching our kids that Americans invented everything, yet here we have a production by our British friends that never once mentioned that Whittle's idea was a dead end, and all current jets use the axial design that was built by the Germans. This video didn't seem to mention that. The fact is, I think every country emphasizes the contributions made by their own and don't always give full coverage to what was done in other places.

whittles choice of the centrifugal flow design was because it was much simpler. he was well aware of the merits of axial flow but thought was too complicated for the RAF. he also designed a turbo prop and turbo fan design by 1945. however the establishment decided that instead of using his designs they would let the other aero engine makers design their own for prestige and financial reasons

@@mrrolandlawrence You didn't deal with the point I made at all. My point is about nationalism and biased reporting. This British production didn't mention an issue that is extremely relevant to this subject. The British engine, designed by Whittle, was tossed aside almost immediately by everyone. I am not bashing Whittle. I know exactly why he started with the centrifugal layout, and that he would have preferred to have used an axial design. I have studied his exploits and know about the challenges he faced. Nothing I'm saying reduces his critical contribution to the development of turbo-jet engines. With that said, this production is clearly biased towards the British view to the point of being deceitful. I don't like it when biases distort reporting of history. Americans do it almost all the time and deserve to be called out for it. This time, it was the British, and they deserve to be called out.

@@deezynar Name one example or give me one single source for a textbook from an American school that "teaches our kids" that America invented everything or even any one thing that wasn't actually invented in America. I went to school in the 70's and I distinctly remember being taught that the steam engine was invented by someone in Scotland, I also remember being taught that television was another invention from Europe and that the internal combustion engine was also invented in Europe. You're confusing some people's perceptions with what's officially "taught" which is wrong, just as any European trolls on the internet believing that Americans being taught in some official capacity that they invented everything is nothing more than a perception that's wrong. So why would you even bother reacting to it?
@deezynar
@deezynar Год назад
@@dukecraig2402 I'm an American and I was taught accurately in school, but that's not where the problem is. Nearly every TV show about technology that's made in the U.S. concentrates on what Americans did, and they work hard to avoid mentioning the contributions made by people from other countries. If you haven't noticed that, and been angered by it, you're a dolt.

@RichardAndewSwayne Yep. but preceding the Me-262 was the He-280, which could have been in service earlier than even the Messerschmitt jet fighter in it's initial form (before it was adapted into a schnellbomber role).
