Welcome to Bowlers Paradise!
Now, I’m just going to say this. Getting to say kaboom after every strike is probably the peak of fun when bowling league. The all new Kaboom from Columbia 300 is a clean, mean hooking machine that blows up the pin deck with its combination of the detonate core and the HK22 reflex pearl coverstock.
With the detonate core having a higher RG and medium differential, I decided to go with a 5x4x4 2LS layout. This one is all about length and continuation so, even though it does pigeon hole the Kaboom into being great when there’s friction and bad when there’s none, the intent is to lean into the natural strengths of the Kaboom and let it shine when the time is right.
AND ON THE LANES…I was almost love at first sight with this one. I loved the shape of the Kaboom right away, and as I got to move further inside, I liked it even more. There’s probably some folks out there in internet land that are going to disagree with me, but I see the Kaboom as a juiced up Hyroad pearl and I am here for it.
These higher RG pearls are awesome and blending out cliffed or wet/dry conditions, and my favorite part about the Kaboom was that once I got to the spot, it handled that expectation really well. Sure, my angles through the fronts had to be pretty big to get to that point, but the only thing that was keeping me from striking once I got into fourth arrow was my own execution.
Now, on the list of downsides, this shape is not for everyone. Lower ball speed players are likely to struggle with keeping this one in the pocket and getting it to go through the pins well enough to carry corners. The Kaboom’s best shape is when it feels like its still hooking through the pin deck instead of rolling through it, and that’s a look that’s hard to control unless you can throw it above 16 mph off your hand.
But if you’re excited to add this one to your bag, I’d consider pairing it with the all new Track Cypher as well as the Columbia 300 High Speed. The Cypher does that same move where it feels like it’s hooking all the way through the pin deck so if you like that look, double down on it. The High Speed is just a super versatile asym piece that can be used on just about any condition. Then the Kaboom rounds it all out when it’s time to get in and give it the big wheel.
Jumping to our crossbrand comparisons, I first took a look at the Storm Journey and here I actually see a really similar reaction to the Kaboom. There’s some slight differences that are so technical they’re basically irrelevant, but the long and short of it is I think the Journey is better if you can keep your angles more in front of you while the Kaboom is superior when you have to open up the lane.
Then I took a look at the Nuclear Forge from Motiv and I see a much more traditional version of that symmetrical pearl shape. I’d say the Kaboom and Nuclear Forge are on pretty much the same level in overall strength, but the lower RG in the Forge gets it to stand up a little quicker, and roll through the pins a bit heavier.
But with that, here’s my recommendations on types of bowlers that I think would match up well with the Kaboom from Columbia 300. The first is two handers. I think if you can fire this one off your hand with a rev rate above 500 it is going to do wonders for your scores. Two handers will have no problem getting the kaboom to clear the middle part of the lane to maximize the hook the see off the spot and through the pins.
The second recommendation is for those that have tried and failed to match up with the HK22 pearl releases. The simplest way to put it is that the brunswick brand has dialed in the ideal use of the new base material in these pearl bowling balls, so that plus the unique core dynamics are likely to give these folks a completely different and more effective look than some of the earlier HK22 pearl options.
