This was such a perfect day to be on the river looking for agates!
Living in eastern Washington we don't have a lot of options in the winter time with everything covered in snow and the ground frozen, so we like to head down to the Tri-Cities when we have the time and get some agates.
We had some good finds and picked up some trash.

I was thinking, what is an agate.? Then, I saw that cut and tumbled sugar agate and my appreciation for the beautiful color and bands showed me if I like it then bring it home.

My husband and I went to this location today and found some beautiful rocks. We weren't agate hunting, just looking for things that caught our eye and some calm time on the river. Great location and thanks for sharing!

Love watching your videos. Great job explaining what you find and giving us an idea of what your looking at when you’re rock agate hunting. What part of the Columbia River are you on? I’m heading to Washington this summer. We’ll be in the issaquah area...

Do you have a vidoe on how to oil your agates? I would love to see your approach. I have not tried it yet myself. P.s. it is snowing at my place as well. SW Washington. It has mostly all mwlted now but we,are still getting some snow flurries here and there.
@CurrentlyRockhounding
@CurrentlyRockhounding 4 года назад
I do not have a video up about how I do it but maybe I should. It's pretty simple. Clean your agates how ever you see fit, those them in a toaster oven at 250 degrees so they can get dry and hot, then take them out and while there still hot drop them in some mineral oil and let them soak it all in. Yeah we just got a few inch's has some weather in the teens. Living at elevation for us is nice thou.

I keep hearing the term "sugar agate" what makes one a sugar agate apposed to the regular banded agate?
@CurrentlyRockhounding
@CurrentlyRockhounding 4 года назад
These are all just common names but the regular banded agate is Chalcedony, which is a cryptocrystalline form of silica. Sugar Agates are often just a really nice Quartzite that has banding in it.

Hey, what was expected to be up there in that band of material you were pointing at to maybe come back and explore later? You that would be a good place to find some quartz?
@CurrentlyRockhounding

Thanks for taking the time to make and post this video. Fun to walk along with you! I've been flintknapping for about 10 years and recently moved to Washington state. Are there any localities that you'd recommend for collecting chert?
@CurrentlyRockhounding
@CurrentlyRockhounding 4 года назад
I love making these videos, thanks for watching them! Flintknapping is such a cool skill to have. I'm not really sure where you can find chert at, maybe some Washington flintnapping groups on facebook or something could be a good start.
@PrideSage99

I've found chert here at the columbia river, about 8 miles to the east of Biggs Junction on the WA side. It was about a 15 minute drive along Hwy 14, then a windy road past an old steel mill. Nice, open spot with a big shore. Not very much chert, but it was there and agates were literally washing up on shore as I stood there. The pieces of chert were pretty large, could bust them up. Another great spot where I find tons of chert is along the Tieton river if I'm in the area. It's hard to NOT find chert, but it's rather ornamental looking stuff and not as brittle as one would expect (assuming I've identified it properly)
