Columbine Sawflies are insects related to bees and wasps. In their young stage of life, they look similar to caterpillars and they chew up the foliage of columbine plants. In this video, entomologist Max Ferlauto from the University of Maryland Burghardt Lab discusses how to manage these pests using an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach.

I read you can predict when they emerge by a certain growing degree day temp. . Somewhere between 100 and 200. Would be helpful to know when to check that way if possible.

I live in the PNW and all of my Columbine look like this every year it’s a bummer! I’ll pick the larvae if I see them but I don’t have time to pick every larvae I’m sure I’ll miss a bunch and so the cycle continues 😭

I seem to get several generations of sawflies in a summer - or at least, several batches. The early spring larvae eat all of the leaves, and they grow back. They a few weeks later, they get eaten again! Does this mean that the early sawflies pupate and emerge in the same summer? Or do overwintering pupae emerge at various points in time? Picking them off by hand does not work for me because they are so camouflaged that I never get them all.

In Maryland, two generations have been noted. One in early spring and then another in early June. bugoftheweek.com/blog/2023/6/5/vanquished-vanishing-columbines-columbine-sawfly-pristiphora-rufipes
