This was great! 3:25 “Your eye has to be trained…” what an awesome line considering Peter only had one eye.

didn't even think of that. my grandfather from Italy had a phony eye. and coincidentally, he resembled Peter Falk, w/ or w/ out the eye situation. in fact, I thought Falk was Italian, he's played so many of them. he was 100% Jewish.

as Peter O'toole said (as the famous stage actor)in 'My favorite year', on his deathbed, "dying is easy. comedy is hard'. all the great comic actors (Falk among them, see the original 'in-laws')can handle drama. when you have to be funny on cue, it's great for your acting skills. my boy Larry was funny in a very serious scene.

The emotions: tensions, frustration, and fear of Columbo’s car and driving-this is magic. Storch gave everything to this scene. Falk gave his all, too. Terrific interplay. 🥰 Had a family friend drive us to the hospital for my dad’s serious operation; we couldn’t get out of the back seat because the car door wouldn’t open. It was like this scene. The tension of the day was pierced by the outbursts of laughter as we pulled up and are pushing, pulling and banging on the squeaking door. This clip brought back that memory so clearly. And, the operation was successful!! Gotta watch this scene again.

@Jack Sak. I adore Peter in Columbo. Something you should all know. Peter loved some of his fellow actors. I mean , REALLY respected them. His co-stars or small parts were CHOSEN by him. It was not an accident. His best friend in real life was John Cassavetes. (Played orchestra conductor who murdered his mistress). Jack Cassidy, William Shatner, Robert Culp starred multiple times. His real life wife (gorgeous Shera Danese) was great in every episode. Lush scripts, scenery Etc but you can BET they all had a lot fun. 🌹💋🙏🏽

I was thinking the same thing. Possibly part of the issue is that with how far he is from the woman, he would not be muttering with only lip movement, he would be opening his mouth and moving his jaw. Maybe changing his facial expression. Instead what I suspect happened is there was no dialogue there during the shoot but later they decided the opening to the scene needed some context and added the audio in editing.

Love the comedy the mannerisms Peter Falk brought to his character, other episodes, when he gets pulled over for vehicle check, lights not working , faulty winscreen wipers etc,. And the look of disbelief on the policeman's face when Colombo tells them he a detective on the force, and others when people want to see his badge , who just can't believe he's on the force,. Greatest driving instructor scene since Paul Lynde in Bewitched (before he became Uncle Arthur). I can imagine this is how a frustrated driving instructor would really be. Great performance by Storch. ‘She backed into a mailbox. A MAILBOX! Can you picture THAT?!’ You can’t help but feel sorry for the exasperated Storch in this scene. The poor guy! The way Columbo smiled, after getting an assurance of a signed affidavit. Makes one wonder if the bad driving was an act to obtain that result. 1. Columbo would have researched Mr. Weekly in advance. @ralphstreemkejr. 2 года назад
I didn’t notice that, and I usually do! Good eye! I’ve seen the absence of many a rearview mirror on plenty of shows over several years, both comedies AND dramas. I’m guessing they do that so the mirror doesn’t obstruct the actors’ faces from the camera pointing at them from the ‘tow car’ in front that’s pulling them. Always a pet peeve of mine. Sometimes you actually see the little square mirror holder, all by itself with no mirror on it, stuck to the inside of the windshield where the mirror USED TO BE! How stupid that always looks! Hate that! I prefer a realistic look, and no rearview mirror definitely AIN’T THAT! Hey producers, just get a smaller mirror, and have the actors sit a little farther apart so the camera sees both their faces. But make sure there’s a frigging REARVIEW MIRROR! It looks ridiculous and unrealistic otherwise. Okay, I’m done now!

When Columbo first arrived at the scene (at the start of this video), he parked behind a car. Two minutes later, when he and Storch are in the car, Columbo pulls out, straight ahead. I am guessing that at the last second, someone decided it would be entertaining for Columbo to not look when he pulled out. This is plausible when not having to back-up, when pulling out. So they moved the car that was in front of Columbo's car. If that car was still in front of Columbo's car, then Columbo would have had to look behind him to back out, resulting in Storch not getting annoyed at Columbo. Of course, they could have had Columbo back-up, too, without looking. But that would have been less believable. Pulling out, straight ahead, without looking, is something countless bad drivers do, making it believable and consistent with Columbo's character. And Storch hit it out of the park. I hope that his health is holding out. It would be great to see him, if he is up to it.

"We're going to turn at the next block." But he doesn't say left or right. ... No way. As a former driving instructor, and one who has many times accompanied a student to take the driving test administered by the state, there is NO WAY an experienced driving examiner would make that mistake! But, hey, the script writers did the important things right, and that's what matters.

Actually, I missed a smaller, but also important point: I was taught--and I expect this goes for all driving instructors and driving test examiners--not to say, "Turn left at the next corner," but rather "At the next corner turn left." The reason is that the student or person being tested is likely to be A) very nervous and B) hyper-willing to please. So there is the chance that as soon as you say, "Turn left," they may make an unsafe left turn, responding to your command without thinking, before you even have a chance to say, "... at the next corner." So FIRST you tell then when/where, then you say what to do.
