But there's been a new development with his current case, where the scheming Mr Goodland has managed to get the cops off his tail except for Columbo of course.
Season 2 Episode 2 "Greenhouse Jungle"
Columbo arrives at a kidnapping case, which at some point turns worse. Everything seems to be related to a trust fund managed by a man with a great love for orchids, Mr Goodland.

To this day, whenever I have chilli (usually fall or winter, but sometimes any time, including spring or summer) I think of this moment from Columbo. I watch this particular episode about once a year. Peter Falk will always be the most underrated actor performing in a mystery lead role. For forty years I've watched and been entertained. Let's see any current Hollywood star do that with an audience member.

Bill, I admit I am a chili fan too. With chopped onions and some cheese, maybe a few crackers if no bread. Though I didn’t realize they used 2 “L”s in chilli. I’m wondering what that variety is like, because I’m used to the one-L variety.

By the attitude he took with Columbo, Ray Millands character literally screamed he was a suspect. It was in direct contrast to his attitude to Columbo in "Death Lends a Hand" where his wife who was much younger than him was murdered. As the husband he would be a strong suspect but his attitude in that episode to Columbo was very helpful even to the point of hiring a private investigator to help him. Of course he had no way of knowing the PI was in actuality the murderer.

Amazing number of fingerprints on the evidence; bag, gun. Wilson's paw prints on the bag. Wilson's prints as he moves the gun on the rug, then Grovers after he unties the handkerchief and pockets the gun. If this weren't a Columbo episode, those would be the classic moves of a film dirty cop ... "Get a picture of the security pad, someone touches it before it's dusted I break their fingers." Any element that has little to non-electrical conductivity capabilities won’t be seen by most metal detectors. This also applies for elements that don’t have magnetic capabilities (called paramagnetic). In addition, sometimes even if the metal has conductivity but it has an extra mall size, it won’t be detected." detectingschool.com/what-can-metal-detectors-not-detect/

Columbo followed the old english UK, police inspector model, complete with trenchcoat, & never a gun. Show the crime first & the sleuth deciphers the clues to the crime; complete with the everyone gathered together in one room for the masterful reveal. But Columbo did it better, with a special flair of character , wit & logical cunning , wrapped up in a sloppy , disheveled raincoat. Also do not forget the car, the dog & the fanciful bumbling. I can watch them over & over again, just for the style alone !

This episode has overtones of the episode "Ransom For a Dead Man". In that episode a brilliant trial lawyer decides to kill her husband and make it look like he was kidnapped and then keep the ransom money for herself. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Columbo had that case in the back of his mind while investigating this one.

I don't think so. Near the end of the episode Columbo says to Sgt Wilson "Without you I would never gotten this idea..." What he was referring was to using a metal detector to find the third bullet buried in the greenhouse a year ago which matched the murder bullet, proving both were fired from the same gun that the greenhouse owner used to fire at intruders a year ago but missed hitting only dirt. If he hadn't found that third bullet, he couldn't have proved the greenhouse owner guilty of murder.
