Nailed it, truth be known the US M-16 or M-4 when they first came out were 3” groups at 100meters…as time went on they reduced that and still maintained reliability. Good video with lots of useful truths. Main thing to remember is know your gun and all of its idiosyncrasies…that can be the difference of walking away or not.

this is why I switched to a Pistol Caliber Rifle for first line rifle defense in SHTF. Fast and cheap to shoot up to 100 yds.

@minerblue9641
@minerblue9641 2 года назад
SHTF. Pistol calibers in a rifle more or less limit you to 90y to125y. According to the shape of the bullet drop trajectory that goes with a pistol caliber. Shooting at a range where the bullet drops 3 or 4 inches in 5 or so yards make accurate hits very hard. But I"m sure it'll work for SHTF. It probably has more pluses than negatives. Ammo weight is a real concern most times.
@NewTestamentDoc

@@minerblue9641 Also, can store tons more of ammo in the same amount of area or with same weight as much less rifle ammo. Also cheaper to shoot... (but with some of the ammo prices today, not sure anymore!)

What you said makes perfect sense to me, even in hunting situations. Around the home, it there were a combat scene then a mini 14 is just too comfortable for words, a 9mm Ruger carbine same thing and close to a 22 for laying dawn a barrage that never allows TOG a chance to reload. Also both are easy to use for your wife or older child in necessary.

@TheLoneRanger745
@TheLoneRanger745 2 года назад
Exactly 💯 right , I think the best reason for zeroing at 100 yards is the fact that one moa is one square inch on the target ,most optic's work in increments that match the one moa grid on the target. So if you're perfectly zeroed at 100 yards the trajectory is actually about an inch and a half high at 50 yards which is the same distance the optic is above the bore, after that mid span point the bullet begins to fall onto the zero Target. So if you're taking a shot at 50 yards and you're zeroed at 100 yards the shot placement will be about an inch and a half above your sight picture . There was another test done showing that 100 yard zero also hit zero at 25 yards before the climb of the ark. Bottom line, from 25 yards to 75 yd impact will be above point of sight or Red Dot or reticle zero.
@americansfortruthandjustic7504
Very practical discussion. Practical distance for suburban defense is 100yds or less. Reliability is critical. Only minimal accuracy is needed (paper plate @100yds). Any hit with any centerfire caliber will ruin that person's day and likely end their desire to attack you.

There are too many people that watched Marshall Dylan draw from the hip and shoot the pistol out of the bad guy's hand just to disarm him and everyone thinks that their weapons should be laser accurate at all distances all the time in all situations. Self defense shooting requires a different mindset, and what we must have in the firearm. As long as you can put rounds in the critical zone, your weapon is accurate enough. However, the firearm can never be too reliable.

Joel, great video. Looking at what is around you with range finder is a logical concept. Factors of incident are as follows: 1. Zeroing, the trajectory. 2. Adjust closeness to subject as required. 3. Good grip. 4. Good sight picture. 5. Appropriate position. 6. Warning to subject. 7. Trigger control. 8. Watch out for adrenaline dump. 9. Limited statement to police. 10. Insurance and training in place before usage. Chose the correct tool for the job.

Well said, Sir ! I completely agree! I live on a 5 acre area. My chances of defending it at over 300 yards are very slim. My odds of defending it against threats at 100 or closer, are much greater. I need a fighting rifle, not a hunting/sniper rifle. Suit the tool to it's need

You are preaching something I've always believed. At the end of the day we need not think in terms of lethality, but in terms of "out of the fight". If a bad guy is hit with any of our standard rifle rounds just about anywhere on his body he will be out of the fight. Ultimately that's the goal. If that person doesn't make it, it's their own fault for shooting at me. Perfection is the enemy of good enough...

Good conversation primer. I guess I’d say, why not keep that 300 plus accuracy in your pocket? Kind of like airbags in a car. Most traffic accidents, they don’t deploy. But when you need them they do. For me, I’d have to know more about the actual reliability gap. How much of that is carried over from the conversation of old? I’ve seen some serious torture tests on modern ARs that would make AK guys take note. So if that gap isn’t what we perceive, I’d go with the AR to have that longer accuracy in my back pocket. Just my two cents. 👍

Great Video! I’m feeling much better about my 100yrd group, not being able to shooting “1 MOA” with the random ammo I found, no sled, no shooting bags, no spotting scope and not a ton of experience. But hitting 4 MOA with a rifle and ammo that could maybe do 2 MOA. Sometimes I loose perspective and think I should be able to hit 5/8” MOA standing and that’s just not a very realistic goal.

Keep in mind it’s not good enough to be able to hit a target. You have to be able to identify it as a threat and it has to be a threat to you before you fire. Just seeing some guy all dressed in black lurking 100 yards away isn’t enough you have to be able to say that you can see and perceive an actual threat to yourself before you fire

Don't quote me on this, but I remember hearing something a long time ago about a study done after WWII. Soldiers were interviewed and it was discovered that the average engagement distance was approximately 120 yards. This was one of the reasons behind the shift to more intermediate chamberings for rifles. Edit: Dinzag Arms sells a polished Tapco G2 trigger for the saiga AK. I liked mine until I moved out of California and swapped it out for an ALG AKT-EL.

I would argue a 100 meter zero on your rifle. The reason is that most optics these days have caliber specific bullet drop compensation built into them. A hundred meter zero on most scopes lets you use you 200 meters compensator angle at 200 meters and under 50 meters. Once you get used to using you drop compensator this way you are in business...

I have always stressed to my students.... BE ACCURATE! But I also stress combat -vs- precision accuracy. In a close quarters, fast and furious encounter, fist sized "center mass" groups are too slow. Paper plate groups as fast as possible are more practical. I use the same standard for hunting and any range you can do so at. However, some mutt holding your child hostage requires a HIGH precision shot in the "T-box or thru the ear. Practice both and be proficient. I LOVE super accurate weapons. But from a practical aspect, a 2" gun is just fine to fight with.
@MrDjay46
@MrDjay46 2 года назад
The comment that you purposely built an AR15 with a bent towards reliability versus precision accuracy was interesting. Precisely what were those steps you took? With a firearm example such as a 1911 handgun I can certainly understand the choices of looser tolerances being incorporated in a “build” or a purchase choice in a preference for reliability over accuracy. But assembly of an AR? The only selections I can see that affects an AR accuracy in assembly is selecting a less premium barrel, going with a non free floated hand guard and perhaps choosing a cheap military trigger versus a premium single or two stage trigger. Most of those choices are made to hit a budget point. What were your looser tolerance choices and in the AR how does that enhance reliability. Thank you. ‘

I completely agree that 2-3 moa is perfectly acceptable for urban environments. Almost anyone who’s on a limited budget (especially now) can still save their money and buy a reasonably priced and reliable means of defense. On the other hand, people that live in rural areas that cannot afford more than one or two target-specific weapons might consider a more tactical type “ranch rifle” for defense against both two and four legged predators as well as putting food on the table. The old saying “don’t underestimate a man with only one rifle”...

"WE DON'T HAVE AN LONGER RANGE!" Hint: that's 4" @ 100 yds". So in testing one I decided a Mini-14 did not rate a scope! The 4 bolts and clap at mid length of the BBL are torqued down to 80 pounds per sq. inch! DAH what does that do to "harmonics"? How much did yours shot STRING after 25 rapid shots? Before and after adding the BBL brace? This said I'd buy the Mini-14 in SS with syn. stock IF THEY WERE $200 :-) they are a good replacement for the M-1 Carbine....
