I got the blue Atari Logbook on June 12, 1982 and made Combat's first challenge that day. (I didn't know about the 1979 green Logbook). Logbook Challenge is to play game 15 on difficulty B and hit the uncontrolled planes repeatedly. I made Master in 2006 and Wizard in 2020 with 35 kills (unless I'd already done it before in 1980-82). Pro (Blue Angel): 17 Master (Flying Phantom): 26 Wizard (Scourge of the Skies): 34 Number of game variations made Atari carts a little more exciting, until they stopped in 1982, but Activision and others didn't have that feature. I wasn't too interested in Combat after the first year, and always felt they could put forth a better starting cartridge after Space Invaders came out, or just give buyers a voucher to pick one. I did buy Armor Ambush, not knowing it was a Mattel Intellivision port under the brand M-Network. That looked pretty, but their 1982 line suffered from not having computer AI. You had to find kids able to play well without owning it. Maybe if M-Network released its games for Atari in 1981, they'd have done better, since Atari only released 4 games that year. Interesting to hear the phrase "rumpus room" as I first heard that on an NPR program a few years ago. There was a kids' TV show called "Romper Room" which sounds similar.

Man, Combat is still a fun game if you've got a second player! I even brought it to a retro game day event for teens at my library, and they had a good time with it as well!

A playable, intelligently designed game. Enduringly enjoyable and a great start for the VCS.

Hey, it's like Chrontendo or the Works series but for Atari! Time to binge! What a nice way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon.

As a big fan of Jeremy Parish, I'm really glad I found a channel that does the same, with the same quality, for my latest passion in gaming (the VCS).

Subbed for more Atari Goodness. It's great to see some love for the pre-NES era. :)

This may be the most underappreciated retro game channel on youtube. I've been marathoning your Atari series for the past week and I'm continuously impressed by the hard work that you've put into these. I can't wait to get caught up and to watch your RCA & Fairchild videos too. Keep up the fantastic work!

My family was one of the first to buy an Atari 2600 back in the late 70's, and a bunch of the neighborhood kids came over to play. My brothers and I spent countless hours playing Combat, and we had many arguments about whose turn it was to control the three biplanes - lol.

Sadly, my parents were pack-rats or hoarders, so it wasn't convenient to invite kids over much. So two-player games went unplayed as time went by. That didn't seem to matter years later as 1982 was the year of one-player arcade ports and adventure-style games. We generally played the superior Odyssey² sports games (except for Basketball) at another kid's home. It also had a joystick with 1 button, but did we make plays on the keyboard?

Really enjoyed this one, I think there's absolutely a lot of promise covering the 2600, and it's nice for a lot more context around it too!

Good first episode. I'm excited to see someone tackle Atari stuff like this. 2600 stuff in general gets unfairly written off nowadays. Keep 'em coming and I'll keep watching 'em!

I never grew up with the Atari 2600. And whilst I have a hard time enjoying the majority of them, I do appreciate its mark in history. Maybe with this series, I might learn more about these games.

Good first episode, but the sound is way too low. I have the sound on RU-vid and my PC both maxed out, and I'm using headphones, and it's still not quite as loud as I'd like it to be.

I'm getting there, slowly but surely! I do have a Patreon tier that gives backers the opportunity to suggest games and topics for coverage beyond the usual chronological order.

1:30 Kinda confused why you have a specific date of release as November 5th, especially considering that was before the MOA show where Tank was actually debuted. 2:20 It's not technically accurate to call the 6507 a "stripped down 6502". It's built on the same architecture but saying it that way implies that it's easily compatible, which it's not. 5:50 The earliest VCS ads I've found are actually from July. It's up in the air as to whether the pre-September stuff is a mistake though since that was the clear intended release window. 6:53 Actually Decuir, not being a sales guy, was probably lowballing it in the first year. Seems that it was closer to 400,000 in the first year of the system (as in 12 months), though there were some mitigating factors to the initial success.

According to contemporary reporting, the MOA show took place Nov. 1-3, 1974, with Tank being introduced at that time. So November 5 would have been shortly after the show it was debuted at.

My bad, I thought it was later in the year, but I would still caution any kind of exact dating unless it's specifically noted close to the events. Interestingly, Breakout has an exact release date even though it contradicts the Atari production document form the 90s.

I read this year that they went for the more primitive 6507 over the 6502 because they got a deal on chips. Maybe they didn't think Atari would still be going strong in 1981-2, as other non-cartridge systems didn't seem to last long.
