Soybean harvest starts out again with some heat. The 9660STS combine tries to catch on fire again.
Filmed in real time, you can see the events unfold.
After dealing with the fire, we get the 9670sts changed over to soybeans and harvest the soybean plot.

As a retired Fire Investigator in North Dakota, I've had my share of experiences with the JD 9600 series combine fires. If you know your combines as well as you seem to, it doesn't have to lead to catastrophic endings. You took action and emptied the hopper, moved off the field, parked next to a water source and explored the inside for hot spots. You discovered the bearing failure that gave you the first audible clue of something was wrong and took action. And you saved the dog! Farming with machines require use of all ones senses, eyes, nose and ears. Back to work in about an hour! Alert Farmers are the best! Good Luck in the future and continue to be the best.

You mentioned in conversation with your dad that there had been discussions on how to react in case of a suspected combine fire. It is good practice to reacquaint yourself with safety practices and how to handle emergency scenarios as you move from machine to machine. We used to call them tail gate sessions when the team would review the hazards they would face in that day's work. It seemed boring and was repetitive, but it refreshed everyone so they could know how to react if needed. The best benefit is it put the issues in mind, and hopefully, you never have to deal with the consequences. Good video and show of how to handle an "event."

Great save. And I agree with the not blasting a radio while operating equipment. I'm a truck driver, never operated a combine YET (some day when I win the lottery, I have a plan that involves trying my hand at every piece of equipment I can get into 😎) While I listen to the radio during my day, it's not up super loud. I'm in tune with the truck, every noise, every vibration, everything. I become one with the truck. This has saved my butt and my employers butt on a number of occasions. Cuz I'm aware when something happens. Great job, great video.

Seems to be a lot of equipment fires during harvest season. Probably would be good to invest in a used 5,000 gallon water truck with 1-1/2" water hose filled up and ready to roll at a moments notice any time tractors/equipment are in the field. Luckily where I live, we have a manned fire house 8-miles away and three volunteer stations within 5-mile radius, all of them with large capacity water tenders.

Failed bearings are the most common cause for combine fires . I've been in one that caught fire before as well Our 9870sts caught on fire during bean harvest in 2012. we use a water filled fire extinguisher for on our combines they work better than a hose for reaching inside the machine. Next time forget the GPS monitor and get the head off and park the thing fast . Your life is more valuable than that monitor and combine but You kept calm and survived. Great video !

Noticed he saved everything in the best order possible; the head, the beans [needed to get them out anyway] the electronics [and the dog] and then look for the fire ...since insurance will cover the combine but not the actual real loss of the head [not replaceable] ...or the dog. Good lesson on not listening to music when working a combine. Work smarter not harder, good job Mr Farmer!

Have you ever thought of having a water source onboard the combines like maybe 50 gallons of water in a long hose? You guys are sometimes miles away from water. I seen you had a fire extinguisher, I was taught in the Navy that even paint Will burn, and they seem to be adding more plastic to everything now. They should have wash out plugs located on the machine so you can direct any fire retardant to areas that needed it.

Great job as most farmers would let it burn to the ground and collect, you may already have done this, but if you get a 150gln truck tank, mount on your one ton, get a craftsman power washer and plumb it all together, you would be surprised what a fast powerful firefighting machine you just built, great for being out in the field in the event things get a bit out of control, take 130glns of water, mix green Dawn liquid and box of baking soda, mix it by driving around sloshing it around, and this will stop a fire quickly.
@Rx7man

yup, a fine mist with decent pressure works really well.. with dust probably being hydrophobic, a bit of dish soap or herbicide surfactant would probably help it seep into matted dust. I have one of those old 3 gallon stainless pressurized water fire extinguishers, I cut the original nozzle off and put a 15* 0.030" pressure washer nozzle on it.. works really well, and you have lots of spraying time so you can explore and wet different areas before you're out of water

To be a farmer you have to be a mechanic, an engineer, a chemist, a biologist, a meteorologist, a trader, a businessman, and, in this day and age, a computer engineer, to name but a few, just to get started. These people are the best people on the planet. My only disappointment with them is that they're too busy to get into politics, cause a country ran by farmers should work pretty well.

Kudos to you and your prompt actions in dealing with that fire issue. I would have to say I would have dumped the header first rather than rescue the iPad - you have a globe for GPS or something different? Great comment from various commenters about having a big old water based extinguisher as well as a dry powder one on the combine for beans at least. It might interest you to know in relation to that short clip about wide row soya beans that here in the UK we have seen repeatedly in winter planted tic beans and oil seed rape (although not so much in spring planted beans) that there are distinct advantages to using lower seed rates. The most obvious is physically shorter more bushy plants leading to easier harvest and less laid crops besides the obvious reduced seed costs. There is the suggestion that there tends to be less plant disease. The downside is though that there is more potential crop losses through pest attack when the plants are really small - this is a major concern with oil seed rape with trouble from slugs and cabbage stem flea beetle.
